The Canadian Soccer League (CSL) is long-standing and is one of two professional soccer leagues in Canada. It is a continuation of earlier forerunner leagues, the National Soccer League (NSL), the Canadian National Soccer League (CNSL) and the Canadian Professional Soccer League (CPSL), going back more than 80 years.
The Canadian Premier League is the most recent entry into professional soccer in Canada with seven teams that kicked off its inaugural season on April 27, 2019.
Professional soccer in Canada also consists of three clubs in membership with Major League Soccer (MLS), the top tier league of 24 teams founded in 1993 and based in the United States. The Canadian clubs are Montreal Impact, Toronto FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps.
