OPENING SEASON WINS FOR GALAXY, HAMILTON

Astros win 4-0 - extend unbeaten streak to seven Saturday night

Brantford Galaxy defeated Serbian White Eagles by a 1-0 score and Hamilton City recorded their first victory with a 2-1 win over Toronto Atomic, two games in the Canadian Soccer League Friday night.

Galaxy striker Stefan Vukovic struck the game’s only goal midway through the first half at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke after collecting an attempted clearance by Serbian Eagles’ defender Vitomar Jelic. The ball came from a free kick on the left wing, Jelic’s clearance rebounded off a defender leaving Vukovic to beat goalkeeper Goran Skaric from close range. It was 1-0 at the interval.

Galaxy’s Camilo Veloza was ordered off by referee Garfield McPharlane  shortly after halftime following a second caution.

Serbian White Eagles’ best opportunity to tie the game came with  at 86 minutes when defender Branislav Vukomanovic struck the crossbar. The home side continued to press for an equalizer, but the game ended with a 1-0 victory for Galaxy,  their first win following a scoreless tie in the opener followed by a 3-2 defeat in the hands of York Region Shooters on May 29.

Hamilton City forward Nika Fidan opened the scoring for the home side for a 1-0 lead at the interval in the game at the Cardinal Newman ground in Stoney Creek, and Terry Dunfield tied the game for Toronto Atomic from a free kick at 74 minutes.

Zdenko Jurcevic struck the winning goal for Hamilton at 84 minutes for the team’s first victory of the season following a 2-1 loss to Milton on May 27.

 

ATTRACTIVE CSL FIRST DIVISION GAMES FOR WEEKEND

logo-cslHamilton City will kickoff a weekend of attractive First Division games in the Canadian Soccer League with their home opener against Toronto Atomic FC on Friday night, an 8 pm start at the Cardinal Newman ground at Stoney Creek. Hamilton were defeated in the first game of the new season, a 2-1 loss at Milton on May 27.

Serbian White Eagles also play their home opener Friday, a 7 pm clash with the visiting Brantford Galaxy at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke. It will be the second game of the new season for Serbian Eagles following their 3-0 defeat by Scarborough on May 28. Brantford will play its third game of the campaign following a scoreless draw in the league opener at Lions Park in Brantford on May 21, and this was followed by a 3-2 loss to York Region Shooters on May 29.

There is a First Division doubleheader at the St. Joan of Arc  ground in Maple on Sunday when FC Ukraine United start their inaugural season in the CSL by hosting Scarborough  at 4 pm, and this game will be followed by a York Region Shooters vs Hamilton City encounter at 6.30 pm.

There are two Second division matches in the CSL on Sunday. with London City opening the season at the Hellenic Centre in London against Waterloo – that’s a 6.30 pm kickoff, while in the GTA York Region Shooters reserves host Serbian White Eagles B at the St.Joan of Arc ground in Maple, an 8.30 pm start.
