YORK REGION WINS CSL CHAMPIONSHIP…..FC Ukraine United defeats Burlington for Second Division title

When Tony De Thomasis took the leap from the community to professional soccer in 2003, his Vaughan Shooters won lots of first prizes for finishing second, both in the outdoor Canadian Professional Soccer League and in the Ontario Men’s Futsal Championship. That will change, he vowed, it’s just a matter of time.

The big wins arrived in 2008 and again in 2014 and York Region Shooters won the CSL Championship yet again with a 5-4 penalty kick victory over Scarborough SC at Lamport Stadium in Toronto on Saturday afternoon.

It was touch and go throughout. Scoreless at halftime, York Region took a 1-0 lead at 51 minutes when Evan Beutler found the Scarborough net past goalkeeper Milos Djurkovic and just 10 minutes later Haris Fazlagic put the ball past York Region goalkeeper Adam Majer.

It was 1-1 at the end of regulation time and two periods of overtime, leading to penalty kicks which led to York Region taking the championship on a  5-4 decision.

In the earlier game, FC Ukraine United maintained its remarkable regular season success by sweeping through the playoffs to defeat Burlington SC 5-2 in the CSL Second Division Championship Final.

Ukraine ended the regular season on top of the Second Division standings  undefeated with an impressive 13-0-1 WLT record, 9 points clear of second place Burlington.  After gaining a bye in the playoff quarterfinals, Ukraine dominated its semifinal opposition Brantford Galaxy by a 6-0 score, leading to Saturday’s championship victory over Burlington.

Midfielder Taras Hromiak struck two for the winners, with Pavlo Lukianets, Roman Pitsur and Yevhen Falkovskyi also finding the net for Ukraine United in the 5-2 final score.

Burlington goals were scored by Brandon Wellington and Amardo Oakley, both from the penalty spot called by referee Javier Prior for fouls in the box. Referee Prior later ejected Ukraine defender Ivan Kucherenko at 80 minutes following a second caution.

SCARBOROUGH ENDS REGULAR SEASON ON WINNING NOTE…..Stojiljkovic takes scoring title

Aleksander Stojiljkovic takes scoring title with four goals over wekend  for a regular season tally of 17.

Aleksander Stojiljkovic, who scored a hat-trick for Scarborough SC in the 3-3 tie with Royal Toronto FC on August 27, and struck four goals in the 7-0 defeat of Milton SC at Birchmount Stadium on September 2, hit yet another four over the weekend when Scarborough defeated Brantford Galaxy 5-0 on Friday and went on to beat SC Waterloo by a score of 3-0 on Sunday evening.

A third game scheduled for the closing weekend of the CSL regular season, Milton SC vs. Brantford Galaxy, was postponed.

The flurry of goals in the season’s closing stages leading to the playoffs lifted Stojilijkovic’s season tally to 17 to capture the First Division leading goalscorer title. The prolific Stojilijkovic beat out Ivliev Sergii of Vorkuta FC who led the scoring during most of the second half of the campaign, ending the regular season with 12.

Stojiljkovic scored three goals (60, 71 and 78 minutes) in the second half of Friday’s  game against the Galaxy after Scarborough led 1-0 at halftime on a goal at 15 minutes by Marc Jankovic, and a goal at 48 minutes by Kiril Dimitrov.

FC VORKUTA WINS FIRST DIVISION IN INAUGURAL SEASON….Scarborough’s Aleksander Stojiljkovic strikes four

FC Vorkuta secured the CSL First Division title with a 7-0 win over Milton SC on Wednesday, then completed its regular season with a 3-2 loss to Serbian White Eagles on Saturday.  in one other game played in the CSL’s top division in a light schedule over the holiday weekend, Scarborough SC defeated Milton SC 7-0 to give the east end Toronto team its fifth win of the season.

Serbian White Eagles, which led the First Division standings most of the season, finished in the runner-up position with the 3-2 victory over Vorkuta, a result that was in doubt until  Serbian Eagles came from a 2-1 deficit to strike twice in the late stages of the game played at Esther Shiner Stadium.

Only two points separated the top three. Vorkuta finished on top with 32 points, Serbian White Eagles with 31 and York Region Shooters ended the season in third position in the standings with 30 points.

Vorkuta FC wins the First Division title in its inaugural season in professional soccer.  Formed in Toronto in 2008 and playing senior amateur soccer until joining the CSL this season, the club derived its name from a Russian town situated just north of the Arctic Circle The Toronto area group adopted the name dedicated to that community and also to represent the Russian speaking community in Canada.

Aleksander Stojiljkovic, who scored a hat-trick for Scarborough SC in the 3-3 tie with Royal Toronto FC on August 27, struck with four goals in the 7-0 defeat of Milton SC at Birchmount Stadium Saturday. Krum Bigishkov scored twice and Marc Yankovic once in the one-sided affair.

There were no games in the CSL Second Division over the weekend – games will resume the weekend September 8 to be followed later in September by the playoffs, leading to the CSL Championship in both divisions.
