CSL PLAYOFF SEMIFINALS THIS WEEKEND……leading to CSL and Second Division championships

The top four teams in the CSL First Division standings advanced from the quarterfinals during the weekend of September 15 and will come together in the semifinals this weekend, the winner advancing to the CSL Championship  final game on Saturday, September 30. Serbian White Eagles, the current CSL champions, are bidding for their third title, following last year’s victory and championship win of 2008. Serbian Eagles meet York Region Shooters, winners in 2014, a 7 pm start at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke on Friday.  FC Vorkuta is seeking its first win in this inaugural year and Scarborough SC is also bidding for its first CSL championship title. These two semifinalists meet at Esther Shiner Stadium on Saturday, a 6pm kickoff. In the Second Division semifinals, top of the league table FC Ukraine United B will be at home at Esther Shiner Stadium for a 3 pm kickoff against Brantford Galaxy reserve squad, one of the two semifinals  on Sunday following an earlier contest between home team Burlington SC B and FC Vorkuta reserves. Serbian White Eagles scored a 5-3 extra time victory over  SC Waterloo, FC Vorkuta defeated Royal Toronto FC 6-3, Scarborough SC eliminated Brantford Galaxy 6-2 and York Region Shooters will advance to the semifinals after the game with Milton SC was cancelled in the CSL Championship quarterfinal playoffs  over the weekend. Forward Jure Glavina scored two first half goals for SC Waterloo in the game with Serbian White Eagles, the outcome of which was in doubt with a 2-2 tie at the interval  and 3-3 deadlock at the end of regulation time at Centennial Stadium Friday night.  Miroslav Jovanovic struck twice for Serbian White Eagles during extra time to give the home side the 5-3 victory. With FC Vorkuta leading 5-2 at halftime there was little doubt about the outcome of the quarterfinal game with Royal Toronto FC at the Soccer Centre in Vaughan Saturday. Sergii lvlev and Oleh Shutov each score twice for Vorkuta during that first half period and Oleh Kerchu  scoring the fifth.  Volodymyr Rudyi hit the sixth goal for the winners in the second half.  Dario Brezak scored twice in the first half for Royal Toronto and Adrian Bembridge found the net for Royals’ goal number three, a 6-3 score at the final whistle. The CSL First Division top scorer Aleksander Stojiljkovic led Scarborough with two goals in the 6-2 victory over Brantford Galaxy at Birchmount Stadium Saturday.  Miroslav Cabrilo also scored twice in a losing cause for the Galaxy. In CSL Second Division Championship games, FC Vorkuta B defeated SC Waterloo B  5-0, Brantford Galaxy B eliminated Serbian White Eagles B 2-1 and the Burlington SC  B vs. Royal Toronto B was postponed.  Ukraine United B gained a bye to the semifinals. Semifinal games will be played the weekend September 22. Playoffs for the Canadian Soccer League Championship will kickoff this coming Friday, September 15 when the current champions, Serbian White Eagles, host SC Waterloo at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke. The quarterfinal games are expected to be completed by Sunday evening when the four surviving teams will advance to the semifinals to be played the weekend of September 22. Serbian White Eagles are bidding for their third Canadian Soccer League championship, having  won the title in 2008 and the 2016 championship with a 2-1 extra time victory over Hamilton City. The CSL Second Division championship will kickoff with a quarterfinal game on Saturday when Brantford Galaxy Reserves host the Serbian White Eagles second squad at Binbrook in Hamilton. Second Division winners Ukraine United Reserves gain a bye in the quarterfinals to join the three surviving teams in the Second Division for semifinal games to be played also during the weekend of September 22. All games will play a 15-minute each way extra time period if tied at the end of regular time. Aleksander Stojiljkovic, who scored a hat-trick for Scarborough SC in the 3-3 tie with Royal Toronto FC on August 27, and struck four goals in the 7-0 defeat of Milton SC at Birchmount Stadium on September 2, hit yet another four over the weekend when Scarborough defeated Brantford Galaxy 5-0 on Friday and went on to beat SC Waterloo by a score of 3-0 on Sunday evening. A third game scheduled for the closing weekend of the CSL regular season, Milton SC vs. Brantford Galaxy, was postponed. The flurry of goals in the season’s closing stages leading to the playoffs lifted Stojilijkovic’s season tally to 17 to capture the First Division leading goalscorer title. The prolific Stojilijkovic beat out Ivliev Sergii of Vorkuta FC who led the scoring during most of the second half of the campaign, ending the regular season with 12. Stojiljkovic scored three goals (60, 71 and 78 minutes) in the second half of Friday’s  game against the Galaxy after Scarborough led 1-0 at halftime on a goal at 15 minutes by Marc Jankovic, and a goal at 48 minutes by Kiril Dimitrov. Dimitrov opened the scoring for Scarborough at 23 minutes in Sunday’s game against SC Waterloo and Stojiljkovic made it 2-0 at 35 minutes, the score at the interval. Dimitrov added second goal at 70 minutes for a 3-0 score at the final whistle. Scarborough SC ended the season in fourth position in the standings with a 7-4-3 WLT record for 24 points while SC Waterloo completed its season in 7th position with a 1-8-5 record for eight points. Playoff games will be played during the second half of September with a schedule to be announced midweek. The Championship Final in both divisions to be played at the end of September.  ...

FC VORKUTA WINS FIRST DIVISION IN INAUGURAL SEASON….Scarborough’s Aleksander Stojiljkovic strikes four

FC Vorkuta secured the CSL First Division title with a 7-0 win over Milton SC on Wednesday, then completed its regular season with a 3-2 loss to Serbian White Eagles on Saturday.  in one other game played in the CSL’s top division in a light schedule over the holiday weekend, Scarborough SC defeated Milton SC 7-0 to give the east end Toronto team its fifth win of the season. Serbian White Eagles, which led the First Division standings most of the season, finished in the runner-up position with the 3-2 victory over Vorkuta, a result that was in doubt until  Serbian Eagles came from a 2-1 deficit to strike twice in the late stages of the game played at Esther Shiner Stadium. Only two points separated the top three. Vorkuta finished on top with 32 points, Serbian White Eagles with 31 and York Region Shooters ended the season in third position in the standings with 30 points. Vorkuta FC wins the First Division title in its inaugural season in professional soccer.  Formed in Toronto in 2008 and playing senior amateur soccer until joining the CSL this season, the club derived its name from a Russian town situated just north of the Arctic Circle The Toronto area group adopted the name dedicated to that community and also to represent the Russian speaking community in Canada.
