BRAMPTON LIONS CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT WITH 3-0 VICTORY OVER LONDON CITY ON SUNDAY......Trois-Rivieres Attak and Serbian White Eagles keep pace with wins Saturday.......Portugal FC playoff hopes suffer set-back with 3-1 defeat

2009-09-06

Sasa Viciknez scored his ninth of the season for Eagles

Brampton Lions became the fourth team to clinch a playoff berth as a result of a 3-0 defeat of London City at Victoria Park in Brampton, the only game in the CSL Sunday, while on Saturday Serbian White Eagles blanked TFC Academy 3-0 and Trois-Rivieres Attak defeated Portugal FC, 3-1.

Brampton opened the scoring on Sunday afternoon when midfielder Jeremy Shepherd struck his first of two goals. He picked up the ball from a good passing play to beat London ‘keeper Chris Davis from 10 yards at the 30th minute mark and the goal stood until the interval.

Shepherd scored his second at 70 minutes and Brampton’s Daniel Nascimento found the net at the 89th minute, his sixth goal of the season.

Brampton 'keeper Amardeep Kharod made key saves in earning the shutout.

Brampton Lions improve to a 7-5-3 WLT record for 24 points, that’s five behind National Division leaders Trois-Rivieres Attak and the Lions join the Attak, Toronto Croatia and Serbian White Eagles in securing a playoff spot.

London City are at 1-13-2 for five points in the standings.

Eight teams will kickoff the CSL playoffs during the weekend September 25.

At Esther Shiner Stadium on Saturday, defender Thierry Mangwa opened the scoring for Serbian White Eagles at the 19th minute mark, a 1-0 score at half-time and forward Sasa Viciknez scored his ninth goal of the season to make it 2-0 at 67 minutes.

Serbia’s Jonathan Hurtis rounded the scoring at 3-0 when his drive from 16 yards beat TFC Academy ‘keeper Garrett Cyprus at 92 minutes, a 3-0 final score.

Serbian White Eagles defender Dragorad Milicevic was ejected by referee Steve DePiero at 65 minutes for Violent Conduct.

Serbian White Eagles improve to a 10-2-2 WLT record for 32 points in the International Division, two points behind Toronto Croatia at the top, while TFC Academy are at 4-7-5 for 17 points in the National Division.

In the game at Trois-Rivieres, Quebec on Saturday, the Attak opened the scoring with a goal at 45 minutes by Alex Surprenant a 1-0 score at the interval.

Portugal FC player-coach Danny Amaral tied the game 1-1 at 57 minutes for the visitors, but Attak forward Yannik Rome-Gosselin struck his seventh of the season to give his side a 2-1 lead at 70 minutes. Defender Amin Meftouh scored the third goal for Trois-Rivieres Attak just before the final whistle, a 3-1 result.

Trois-Rivieres Attak continue to lead the National Division and now have a 9-4-2 record for 29 points, while the loss to Portugal FC was a set-back to their playoff aspirations. The Toronto team now has a 3-5-8 record for 17 points with just two games remaining in the regular season as they bid for playoff berth in a tight race.
