MILLTOWN ON TOP...............Montreal Academy, Portugal FC and Serbian White Eagles also winners

Milltown FC took over top position in the CSL standings with a 3-0 defeat of North York Astros Friday night, while in three other games Montreal Impact Academy blanked St. Catharines Wolves 2-0, Serbian White Eagles won a 1-0 squeaker over FC Hamilton Croatia and Portugal FC ran riot over London City 7-3.

Milltown FC, in their inaugural CSL season, is one of four new teams in the 2010 campaign and is representing the town of Milton just west of Toronto, the smallest population of the nine community teams in the CSL. The carefully selected side that expected to use the first year to become established in the tough pro loop, has attracted a lot of attention with an undefeated streak under head coach Rafael Carbajal that now extends to nine games going back to June 6.

Striker Lesley St. Fleur opened the scoring for the home side at the Bishop Reding ground, he picked up a pass down the middle to find the net at the 14th minute mark. Defender Thierry Mangwa increased the lead to 2-0 at 35 minutes, scoring from a play that started from a corner kick for a 2-0 score at the interval.

Martijn Kuijpers sealed the win for Milltown when he struck home from the penalty spot at the 70th minute, following a foul inside the 18 yard line.

The win gives Milltown a 7-2-4 record for 25 points, two ahead of York Region Shooters who are at home to Toronto Croatia on Sunday.

Montreal Impact Academy scored two second half goals at Club Roma for their victory over St. Catharines, the first by midfielder Domenique Morin at 58 minutes and the second 10 minutes later when Yannik Rome-Gosselin beat Wolves’ goalkeeper Claudio Perri.

The win improves the Quebec side to 4-5-4 for 16 points in the standings, they now meet Brampton Lions at Victoria Park on Saturday in a 2-game back-to-back swing through Southern Ontario. St. Catharines are struggling with a 2-8-2 record for 8 points as they pass the half way mark in a bid to make the playoffs.

London City is also bidding to improve their lowly position and be positioned during the next few weeks to make the top eight, but their effort took a setback with a 7-3 home loss to Portugal FC at the Cove Road ground in London.

The home side was no match for a lively Porugal FC side which took an early lead on a goal at 8 minutes by forward Jarek Whiteman and London tied the game 1-1 at 21 minutes on a goal by Estevao Franco. Portugal’s John Jonke put his side up 2-1 at 39 minutes and just before the interval Branko Majstorovic made it 3-1 for the visitors.

Adrian Pena increased the Portugal lead to 4-1, scoring from the penalty spot at 62 minutes, and Pena scored a second goal two minutes later to make it 5-1. Ramon Bailey made it 6-1 and at 77 minutes Tom Beattie struck his 6th of the season for London City, making it 6-2. Genti Buzali gave the home side some hope with a goal at 86 minutes, but Bailey completed the rout four minutes later for a 7-3 final score.

Portugal FC move up to 7th place with a 5-5-2 record for 17 points, while London City have a 1-6-4 record for 7 points a the foot of the First Division.

A lone strike by forward Sasa Viciknez at 32 minutes, he scored from 10 yards from a difficult angle, was enough to give the Toronto-based Serbian White Eagles the three points from a 1-0 score over FC Hamilton Croatia,  a close contest at Brian Timmis Stadium in Hamilton.

Viciknez picked up a second yellow card to be dismissed at the 74th minute mark and will sit out his team’s next game against North York Astros on Sunday.

Serbian White Eagles are now at 5-1-3 for 18 points and with only nine games played and with just one defeat are seen as a serious contender to First Division honours if their present pace continues into the second half of the season.

FC Hamilton Croatia have a 5-3-5 for 20 points and are in 4th position.
