TORONTO CROATIA HOLD SHOOTERS TO 1-1 TIE...........Serbian Eagles unbeaten in 9 with 5-0 defeat of North York Astros

2010-07-25

Croatia 'keeper Sandi Makita looked sound when pressed

York Region Shooters failed to regain top position in the CSL standings after being held to a 1-1 tie by Toronto Croatia Sunday and in one other game played that day Serbian White Eagles increased their undefeated streak to nine games with a 5-0 rout of a slipping North York Astros.

York Region Shooters have held the top position for most of the season but were dislodged by Milltown FC on Friday night following that team's 3-0 defeat of North York Astros.

In a well played tight encounter played at Maple just north of Toronto, the Shooters took the lead with an impressive goal by veteran Desi Humphrey who drilled a shot from 20 yards into the centre of the net over the head of Croatia goalkeeper Sandi Matika.

The game went back and forth most of the time and when Shooters pressed to increase the lead Makita looked sound in the Croatia net. His team eventually tied the score at the 78th minute mark with a strike by Hayden Fitzwilliams  who appeared to deflect the incoming ball out of reach of York Region goalkeeper Camilo Benzi.

York Region now have a 7-3-3 record for 24 points and they sit in second position one point back of Milltown FC. Toronto Croatia have a 2-2-5 record for 11 points.

Shawn Brown opened the scoring for Serbian White Eagles after just 3 minutes and Milos Scpanovic struck his first of two goals at the 24th minute mark for a 2-0 score at half-time.

Serbian Eagles pressed early in the second half and at 47 minutes Scepanovic scored his second goal and ninth of the season from the penalty spot  to put the visitors well in command. The penalty was awarded by referee Hussan Rifai for hand ball in the box by the Astros’ Roozbeh Houdaji.

Serbian Eagles forward  Kiril Dimitrov made it 4-0 at 49 minutes and at 85 minutes Viktor Anastasov completed the rout for a 5-0 score at the final whistle.

Serbian Eagles continue their climb up the standings having improved to a 6-1-3 WLT record for 21 points and are now tied for third place with TFC Academy. Last year’s CSL Championship finalists are unbeaten since their 1-0 loss to Milltown FC on May 28 and have conceded just six goals in the 10 games played in the regular season campaign.

North York Astros moved into the season in promising style but are now 4-7-2 for 14 points and have slipped to 9th position in the standings.
