Croatia over Italia, 3-2, Astros edge Brampton by same score and Serbia nips St. Catharines 1-0 in CSL action Sunday

2008-06-06

Toronto Croatia were in full stride to defeat Italia Shooters 3-2 at Maple, while North York Astros won a ding-dong 3-2 victory over Brampton Lions and Serbian White Eagles nipped St. Catharines Wolves 1-0, all three games in the Canadian Soccer League Sunday afternoon. In earlier weekend action, Trois-Rivieres Attak registered back to back wins in a 2-game sweep of southwestern Ontario starting with the Quebec team's first victory of the new season, a 5-0 convincing win over London City at Cove Road in London on Friday night, followed by a 2-1 defeat of Windsor Border Stars Saturday. Also on Friday night, Brampton Lions downed Windsor Border Stars by a 5-0 score, Portugal FC blanked TFC Academy 2-0 in a well-played first Game of the Week on Rogers TV and Italia Shooters came back from a 1-0 deficit to score twice in the late stages for a 2-1 victory over Serbian White Eagles.

Hugo Herrera scored the winner for Toronto Croatia at Maple on Sunday afternoon, the goal coming at 84 minutes. Croatia jumped into a 2-0 first half lead on goals by Tihomir Maletic at 6 minutes and Halburto Harris at 23 minutes, but two Italia goals, the first by Frank Jonki at 34 minutes, followed by Marco Terminesi at 48 minutes, tied the score before Herrera's winner.

North York won their second game in the new season with a winning goal at Esther Shiner Stadium by Japanese-born Go Nacaoka, who earlier played in France. Nacaoka struck a low drive from 18 yards to find the net late in the game. Earlier, Sergio Ribadeneira opened the scoring at 14 minutes for the Astros, Brampton's Daniel Nascimento made it 1-1 at 36 minutes, the Lions' Nordo Gooden made it 2-1 at halftime and Selvin Lammie hit the equalizer for North York at 51 minutes before Nacaoka scored his winner in the 3-2 final score.

In the game at Club Roma in St. Catharines, Dragan Radovic scored his second of the weekend when he took a cross from Milan Janosevic to find the net at the 59th minute mark, the only goal of the game in the Serbian White Eagles defeat of the Garden City side.

Nicolas Lesage opened the scoring for the Attak at 37 minutes in the game against the Border Stars on Saturday night for a 1-0 lead at halftime, but David Kodoic headed home the equalizer for the border team following the interval. The winner came on a goal by Jean-Louis Besse, his second of the weekend, at the 60th minute mark, a 2-1 victory for Trois-Rivieres. Windsor's Dominic Sicluna was shown a red card near the end of the game.

Midfielder Alpha Bah opened the scoring for Trois-Rivieres at 24 minutes in Friday night's game, Jean-Louis Besse made it 2-0 at 28 minutes, Nicolas Lesage increased the score to 3-0 at 38 minutes, Elkana Mayard struck the fourth at 42 minutes for a 4-0 halftime score and Hector Contreres rounded off the scoring at 58 minutes for a 5-0 final.

In the other games played Friday night, Danny Cameira led Brampton Lions with two goals in his team’s 5-0 home win at Victoria Park in Brampton, he scored at 68 and 75 minutes, while Alex Arbello scored at 16 minutes, Daniel Nascimento struck at 42 minutes, Nordo Gooden at 54 minutes. It was the Lions second win of the season following a 1-0 home opener victory on June 1.

Ramon Bailey  was named the Player of the Game for Portugal FC in an entertaining encounter at Lamport Stadium on Friday night, the home side defeating TFC Academy 2-0. Jamaican-born Bailey struck a picture goal at 65 minutes to add to Portugal captain Danny Amaral’s opening marker from the penalty spot 15 minutes earlier. Referee Isaac Lambert awarded the kick after Amaral was brought down by the Academy team’s John-Louis Perruzza. Perruzza was shown the red card for the foul.

There was late drama at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke where Italia Shooters scored twice in the late stages to overcome a 1-0 lead by Serbian White Eagles to win the game, 2-1. Dragan Radovic opened the scoring for Serbia at 45 minutes and just when it was beginning to look like the goal would stand up Italia’s Frankie Jonke tied the game at 86 minutes.and Jamaal Smith scored the winner at the 94th minute mark. Murphy Wiredu of Italia Shooters was ordered off at the 25 minute mark.
