With just five games remaining in their regular season schedule, unbeaten York Region Shooters will be attempting to maintain their 7-point margin with a win at the Kalar Sports Park against Niagara United Saturday night, a game that sees the top place Shooters visiting a struggling Niagara team at the foot of the table.
It may be more difficult for Toronto Croatia when they meet an improving London City determined to be one of the first eight in the standings to enter the championship playoffs. The City were impressive in their 5-3 victory at Kingston last weekend, a win that leaped the Southwestern Ontario team into sixth place to leave an impression London may be hitting top form at the right time and capable of much more than the bottom-of the table position occupied earlier in the season.
Kingston’s late season target is to occupy one of the top four positions at the end of the regular season to earn home advantage in the playoffs, but the eastern Ontario side has demonstrated an erratic contrast from their solid form and consistency which rewarded the team with the First Division title in 2013.
There were noticeable changes in the line-up with last weekend’s 5-3 loss. “We felt we had to make some changes before the playoffs,” said president Joe Scanlon during the week. Kingston visit Waterloo Sunday, while the Astros, still attracting attention despite the narrow loss to Toronto Croatia last weekend are at home to Brampton City Utd, and Burlington are at home to Serbian White Eagles Sunday.
