Kingsman A eliminated FC Vorkuta in a penalty kick decider, Scarborough defeated CSC Mississauga 2-1 in overtime and SC Waterloo beat Serbian White Eagles on penalty kicks in the three opening quarterfinal games for the Canadian Soccer League Championship played Saturday night.
The fourth quarterfinals game, FC Ukraine United vs Hamilton City, will be played Sunday, October 13.
In what was described as a highly attractive tough match at the Ontario Soccer Centre where FC Vorkuta and Kingsman were tied 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes and 30 minutes of overtime before Kingsman scored a 4-2 penalty kick victory to hand the defending champions their first defeat of the season. It was also Vorkuta’s most important game of the 2019 campaign.
Mykola Temniuk and Oleksandr Volchkov scored for Vorkuta and Oleksandar Alieksieiev and Bogdan Bortnik struck for the winners.
Kingsman will travel to Birchmount Stadium to meet Scarborough in the semifinal following the Toronto east end team’s 2-1 victory over CSC Mississauga.
Forward Gonzalo Matias Cabrera Celis was the hero for Scarborough, scoring both goals at Birchmount Stadium, including the winner early in the overtime period following a 1-1 tie at 90 minutes. Midfielder Mykhaylo Berezovyy scored the lone goal for CSC Mississauga.
It was also a close encounter at RIM Park where Waterloo advanced to the semifinals with a home victory on penalty kicks over Serbian White Eagles. The teams were tied 1-1 at 90 minutes and 30 minutes of overtime on goals for Waterloo by midfielder Miodrag Kovacevic at 55 minutes, and an equalizer for the visitors by midfielder Bozidar Tadic at 71 minutes.
Waterloo will meet Ukraine United or Hamilton City in the semifinals.
