SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES TOUGH TO SCORE AGAINST

PICTURE: While Vorkuta has yet to drop a point, Serbian White Eagles are tough to score against and Saturday’s encounter may may be a challenge for the current champions.

It’s a full slate with all 10 teams in action this coming weekend, the halfway point of the season for a Canadian Soccer League First Division that continues to be led by a team that has earned its catch me if you can attitude with an 8-0-0 record while also posturing for a soon-to-be defence of the league championship.

FC Vorkuta has an 8 point margin at the top which is a formidable challenge for any opposition that still has design on winning the First Division title. Vorkuta B, the club’s reserve team, is developing a similar pattern, not yet conceding a point with its 4-0-0 record in the Second Division following a 5-2 victory over Kingsman B on July 17.

Not surprisingly, Vorkuta’s Mykola Temniuk, a Ukraine-born striker, leads the First Division goalscoring after finding the net 10 times so far in the campaign.

Vorkuta is at home Saturday at the Ontario Soccer Centre against Serbian White Eagles, a team that has won five of its six games played so far and has a reputation for being difficult to score against. Serbian Eagles has been conceding about one goal per game in recent times, which is often championship performance. The team conceded one goal per game during the regular season in 2017, 1.25 in 2018 and in the current campaign is running at 1.3 goals per game in the six matches played. The stout defence and top goalkeeping, mostly by Goran Skaric, may prove to be a challenge for Vorkuta.

Judging by the team’s performance since entering the CSL in 2016, Ukraine United are in a catch-up position having been defeated twice in the six games played so far. The Toronto-based team visits Hamilton City Sunday. CSC Mississauga, coming off a 5-2 defeat to Ukraine United, travels for a game with Brantford Galaxy Saturday, Waterloo will be at Esther Shiner Stadium on Sunday to meet Kingsman A  and Scarborough, following a tough 1-0 loss to Vorkuta on July 14, is at home to Real Mississauga, also on Sunday.

VORKUTA MARCHES ON…..Lukianets hat-trick for Ukraine Utd

FC Vorkuta scored a penalty goal 1-0 victory over Scarborough to stretch its 100 per cent record to eight games, and a hat-trick by midfielder Pavlo Lukianets led FC Ukraine United to a 5-2 defeat of CSC Mississauga, two games in the Canadian Soccer League First Division Sunday.

Vorkuta attacked the Scarborough goal early while Scarborough broke away on the counter at Birchmount Stadium, but both teams failed to score until 22 minutes when Vorkuta was awarded a penalty after Serhii Ursulenko was brought down in the box. Vorkuta captain Liubomyr Halchuk drove the ball into the net at the 22nd minute mark, it was 1-0 at the interval.

Scarborough went on the attack often in the second half and there were close calls including striking the woodwork at 76 minutes, but last season’s championship finalist failed to break through and Vorkuta held on to the 1-0 lead to the final whistle.

Vorkuta increased its winning streak to eight games for a 8-0-0 WLT record for 24 points, while Scarborough remains in second position with a 5-2-1 record for 16 points

CSC Mississauga midfielder Mykhaylo Berezovyy opened the scoring at Centennial Stadium, finding the net past Ukraine United goalkeeper Oleksandar Popravka at the 7th minute mark.

Forward Nazar Milishchuk equalized for Ukraine United at 26 minutes, his third goal of the season, and the home side scored again to take the lead five minutes later when Pavlo Lukianets struck the first of his three goals to make it 2-1.

Lukianets made it 3-1 at 39 minutes and this was followed by CSC Mississauga reducing the lead to 3-2 at 40 minutes, a goal by Pero Menalo who collected a rebound from goalkeeper Popravka off a shot by Mykhaylo Berezovyy and the score was 3-2 at the break.

Lukianets completed his hat-trick at 66 minutes for a 4-2 Ukraine United lead and forward Sviatoslav Dziadykevych completed the scoring at 92 minutes for a 5-2 result at the final whistle.

Ukraine United won its fourth game of the season, has a 4-2-0 record and is now tied in fourth position with SC Waterloo, each team with 12 points. CSC Mississauga has a 1-6-1 record for 4 points in ninth position in the table.

SECOND DIVISION UPDATE

Two goals by Ruslan Honcharuk led FC Vorkuta B to a 5-2 victory over CSC Mississauga B Sunday, giving the Vorkuta reserve team a 3-0-0 record and three points lead over Kingsman B, CSC Mississauga B and Serbian White Eagles B, each team having 6 points.

REAL MISSISSAUGA vs HAMILTON MATCH ABANDONED

A disturbance late in the first half on the field of play resulted in the abandonment of the Real Mississauga vs Hamilton City match at Huron Park in Mississauga Saturday night, the only CSL First Division game scheduled Saturday and one of three being played during the weekend.

“While we do have an early report on the game being suspended, we will not be making a decision on its disposition until the complete referee’s report is received and all circumstances are considered,” explained CSL administrator Pino Jazbec following the game.

There are two First Division matches scheduled for Sunday with FC Ukraine United at home to CSC Mississauga at Centennial Stadium, a 1 pm start, and FC Vorkuta visits Scarborough SC at Birchmount Stadium, an 8 pm kickoff. Vorkuta has yet to drop a point in the seven games played to date, while Scarborough have a 100 per cent record at home.

SCARBOROUGH HAS THE WINNING CREDENTIALS

It’s without fanfare that  FC Vorkuta is so impressive while winning every match, home and away, since its season opener on May 25. But the toughest test so far may well be the visit to Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough this weekend to meet a home side that’s sitting second in the standings with an eye-catching 100 per cent record home record while conceding just a single goal in the four home games played so far this campaign. Only five goals have been allowed in all games played by the east Toronto team, a per game average that’s the best in the league.

And Scarborough are not shy in front of goal, having found the net 20 times in the seven games played, so the balance spells a determined effort this 2019 season to clinch a league title or overall championship that’s been elusive since entering the league in 2015. It may begin on Sunday.

Vorkuta visits Scarborough Sunday evening, an 8 pm kickoff.

Ukraine United have yet to mount a serious bid, having been defeated twice in the five games played so far this season, but a more positive record is expected as the league moves into a busy mid-season period. Last year’s First division title winner is at home to CSC Mississauga at Centennial Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The weekend opens with the first of three First Division matches scheduled for Huron Park in Mississauga with Hamilton City visiting for a clash with Real Mississauga Saturday evening, a 7 pm start.

SATURDAY VICTORIES FOR VORKUTA, SERBIAN EAGLES

FC Vorkuta won an abbreviated seventh game of the season by a 3-1 score over Brantford Galaxy –  a match cut short late in the second half due to the torrential rains, Serbian White Eagles overcame a 1-0 deficit to score two late goals for a 2-1 win over SC Waterloo,  and Scarborough were held to a 1-1 draw by Hamilton City, three games in the Canadian Soccer League First Division Saturday.

Vorkuta attacked early at Heritage Field but Brantford Galaxy struck first with a half volley by Bojan Samardzija, his fifth goal of the season, that caught the corner of the net for a 1-0 lead by the home side at 17 minutes.

Vorkuta equalized at 29 minutes when a rebound from a save by Galaxy goalkeeper Georgi Jovicic from a drive by Serhii Ursulenko was picked up by Bohdan Borovskyi who promptly found the net with a powerful shot.

Liubomyr Halchuk made it 2-1 for Vorkuta from the penalty spot at 47 minutes after Ursulenko was brought down just inside the box and at 50 minutes Mykola Temniuk took a through pass from Pavlo Chornomaz to drive a low shot into the far corner, a 3-1 score in favour of Vorkuta at the final whistle in difficult conditions during a downpour late in the game. It was Temniuk’s 10th goal of the season to lead  goalscoring in the First Division.

Vorkuta have a 7-0-0 WLT record for 21 points on top of the First Division, while Brantford Galaxy are at the foot of the table with a 0-6-1 record for one point.

Waterloo opened the scoring at RIM Park with a goal at 10 minutes by midfielder Miodrag Kovacevic, his 5th of the season,  and it was an even contest to the break with the score 1-0 for the home side.

There were few opportunities until Serbian White Eagles struck with two goals in the closing stages, the first by Bozidar Tadic who found the net past Waterloo goalkeeper Dalibor Ivanovic at 82 minutes and the winning goal three minutes later by forward Milos Scepanovic, his 4th of the season. Waterloo pressed for an equalizer late but it was 2-1 for the visitors at the final whistle.

Serbian White Eagles are in third position in the standings with a 5-1-0 record for 15 points following the win, while Waterloo are in 4th position with a 4-4-0 for 12 points.

Scarborough took a first half lead on a goal by Hammud Ali Atif and Lucas Raposo equalized for Hamilton City in the 1-1 draw in the early game at Heritage Field. Scarborough now has a 5-1-1 record for 16 points in second position in the table, while Hamilton City has a 1-3-2 record for five points in seventh position.

KINGSMAN UPSET UKRAINE UTD – Mississauga teams tie

Expansion team Kingsman A upset current First Division title holder Ukraine United 2-1, while in the local Mississauga encounter CSC Mississauga and Real Mississauga fought to a 1-1 draw, two games in the Canadian Soccer League First Division Friday night.

Follwing a scoreless first half, forward Ivan Kucherenko opened the scoring for visiting Ukraine United at Esther Shiner Stadium, the goal coming from a penalty at 59 minutes when Kingsman defender Oleksandar Alieksieiev brought down a Ukraine United player in the box and referee Afsar Khan has no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Kingsman equalized on a goal by forward Viktor Raskov five minutes later. Raskov, who entered as a substitute at halftime, took a  good cross from Andrii Kovalchuk  to head into the net.

Raskov also struck the late winner for the home side, taking a long ball from Hlib Kiselov to find the net with a chip shot at the 86th minute mark.

Kingsman were reduced to 10 men at 88 minutes when Stanislav Katana was shown the red card by referee Khan following a second caution and the 2-1 score in favour of Kingsman held to the final whistle.

Real Mississauga led after six minutes at the Hershey Centre, the 1-0 score judged an own goal when a dangerous cross by forward Danilo Richards was partially blocked by CSC Mississauga midfielder Ivan Sozanski, but then entered the net past CSC goalkeeper Ivan Koko.

CSC Mississauga equalized at 14 minutes when Amador Torres was brought down in the box on a counter attack and  defender Peter Vukadin struck from the penalty spot into the bottom right corner of the net. It was 1-1 at the break.

Real Mississauga were reduced to 10 men at 67 minutes when forward Mohamed Elsabahy was given a second caution and shown the red card by referee Marco Jaramillo.

It was end to end with both sides on the attack in the second half and CSC Mississauga found the net from close range at 83 minutes but the goal was ruled offside. The 1-1 draw held to the final whistle.

THE WEEKEND GAMES: A local Mississauga clash between CSC Mississauga and Real Mississauga gets the First Division weekend games underway at the Hershey Centre and at the same 9 pm kickoff time a second game will be played Friday night with Kingsman A at home to FC Ukraine United at Esther Shiner Stadium.

Ukraine United went down 2-0 to Scarborough in just its fourth game of the new season on June 30 and Kingsman may find last year’s First Division title winner tough to handle as the Ukraine side resumes its bid for top honours.

Scarborough, which has won four games from five played and is away to Hamilton City Saturday night, is expected to continue with the form that took the Toronto east-end side to the championship final game last season, a game lost in a penalty kick shoot-out to FC Vorkuta.

Serbian White Eagles and SC Waterloo, both playing well and placed second and third in the standings respectively, come together at RIM Park, Waterloo on Saturday at 7. Both teams are capable as they look to repeat their championship honours of recent years – Serbian White Eagles in 2016 and Waterloo in 2013.

But FC Vorkuta are the early season favourites and in a top vs bottom match with Brantford Galaxy at Heritage Field on Saturday night. Vorkuta have come out on top in all six games played so far, while the Galaxy have yet to win this season following a eighth place of nine finish in 2018.

SCHEDULE CHANGE: The league office has announced a change in the First Division schedule that affects Game 52 on Saturday, August 3 between SC Waterloo and FC Vorkuta previously set for Guelph University, will now be played the following day, Sunday, August 4 at RIM Park a 7 pm kickoff.

 SECOND DIVISION UPDATE: A 7-1 victory by FC Vorkuta B Wednesday night moved the reserve team in a tie for the top position of the CSL Second Division and although Kinsman B was defeated 5-3 by Serbian White Eagles B the same night they, and CSC Mississauga B, are also tied at the top. All three sides have six points and are in front of Hamilton City B (1-1-0 WLT with 3 points), Serbian White Eagles B (1-2-0 with 3 points) and Brantford Galaxy B (0-3-0 with 0 points.).

SCARBOROUGH DEFEATS UKRAINE UNITED 2-0 SUNDAY

Scarborough SC scored twice in the first half to defeat FC Ukraine United 2-0 in a well played encounter at Birchmount Stadium Sunday night, to complete the holiday weekend schedule in the Canadian Soccer League.

There were few opportunities on both sides, but Scarborough scored at 19 minutes when midfielder Naieemollah Mobin found the net with a shot from 12 yards for a 1-0 lead.

Midfielder Zoran Knezevic increased the lead to 2-0 with a drive from 10 yards at the 30th minute mark, the score at the break and at the final whistle.

The victory made amends for the east Toronto team following a loss by the same score to Ukraine United at Centennial Stadium on June 23.

Scarborough takes a second position in the First Division standings as a result of the win, an improved 5-1-0 WLT record for 15 points while conceding just 4 goals in the 6 games played.

It’s the first defeat of the season for Ukraine United, now with a 3-1-0 record for nine points in fifth position. The defeat also leaves FC Vorkuta the only CSL First Division team with a 100 per cent record at this juncture of the current season.

KINGSMAN SCORE 4-0 FRIDAY VICTORY

Kingsman A struck three goals late in the game for a 4-0 final score and a second win of the season to beat Brantford Galaxy at Esther Shiner Stadium, the only match in the Canadian Soccer League Friday.

Sayid Belmokhtar opened the scoring for Kingsman at 38 minutes, finding the net past Galaxy goalkeeper Georgi Jovicic for his second goal of the season. It was 1-0 at the interval in an otherwise even  first half contest.

Midfielder Ivan Yanchev made it 2-0 for Kingsman at 78 minutes and three minutes later it was 3-0 for the home side on a goal by defender Hlib Kiselov.

Midfielder Vitaliy Kolomychenko completed the scoring at 87 minutes and it was 4-0 at the final whistle.

Kingsman move up to sixth position in the First Division standings with a 2-4-0 (WLT) record for six points, while Brantford Galaxy are winless with a 0-5-1 record at the foot of the table.

VORKUTA SETTING TORRID PACE

Following the 2-0 defeat of Scarborough SC by FC Ukraine United on June 23, FC Vorkuta and Ukraine United remain the only teams with a 100 per cent record since the CSL First Division kickoff on May 19. If points are not dropped earlier, these two teams have an opportunity to maintain and extend their string of victories to August 3 when they come together for the first time in the current campaign at the Ontario Soccer Centre.

FC Vorkuta has set a torrid pace moving into the new season scoring 29 goals for five victories, so it’s not surprising that two Vorkuta players, Mykola Temniuk and Iaroslav Solonynko lead the First Division in  goalscoring. Temniuk has so far posted two hat-tricks. Solonynko, 28, has a strong background in high level soccer mostly in his native Ukraine and Poland before signing for Vorkuta in 2017. Vorkuta will host Hamilton City on Saturday.

Ukraine United has the 100 per cent record to date by winning three games by slim margins, but has conceded just a single goal.  It’s a quick return date with Scarborough at Birchmount Stadium on Sunday night following the recent clash between these two teams on June 23. Scarborough will be out to make amends for their 2-0 loss to Ukraine United on that Sunday evening.

Real Mississauga (1-3-0 WLT) host SC Waterloo (3-3-0) at Huron Park on Saturday and the opening game in this upcoming Canada Day holiday weekend has Kingsman A (1-4-0) at home to Brantford Galaxy (0-4-1) at Esther Shiner Stadium

UKRAINE DEFEAT SCARBOROUGH 2-0 SUNDAY

FC Ukraine United struck two second half goals to defeat Scarborough SC 2-0 at Centennial Stadium in the only CSL First Division game played Sunday.

It was a well-played first half with good pace between two evenly matched teams and not until the 60th minute was the scoreless deadlock broken with a well taken goal by Bohdan Skotskyi. The defender took a pass from Ihor Sorotoskyi to take a strong rising shot from 20 yards across the goalmouth and inside the far post.

Scarborough raided the Ukraine goal in an effort to level the score and the best scoring opportunity came at 66 minutes when forward Kiril Dimitrov was brought down outside the box and the free kick by Dimitrov went inches wide of the left post.

Ukraine went further ahead 2-0 at the 80th minute when midfielder Taras Kryvyy moved the ball forward to Nazar Milishchuk outside the box and his ground shot beat the oncoming Scarborough goalkeeper John Trye to enter the net while the visitors’ defenders appealed for an offside call.

It was FC Ukraine’s third win in as many games to maintain a 100 percent early season record, while Scarborough suffered its first defeat of the season.

WIRLWIND KICKOFF FOR PROLIFIC VORKUTA

FC Vorkuta kept up its prolific scoring with a 5-1 defeat of SC Waterloo and in one other CSL First Division match played Saturday, Hamilton City were held to a 2-2 draw in their home encounter with Brantford Galaxy.

It was a whirlwind opening at the Ontario Soccer Centre with Vorkuta scoring five goals in the first 20 minutes of play, starting with Mykola Temniuk scoring for Vorkuta at the 3rd minute, beating two defenders before driving the ball into the near corner.  Almost immediately after the re-start Vadym Gostiev made it 2-0 with a powerful drive off a rebound.

Tamniuk increased the Vorkuta lead to 3-0 at six minutes, taking a long throw from Gostiev to side-step oncoming Waterloo goalkeeper Dalibor Ivanovic and find the net.

Temniuk struck again at 17 minutes to complete his hat-trick – his second hat-trick of the season – after taking a low cross from Serhii Melnyk on the right to find the top corner for a 4-0 Vorkuta lead.

Iaroslav Solonynko completed the Vorkuta barrage of scoring at the 20th minute mark with a picture goal from 23 yards following a good passing play and shot that caught the top corner. It was 5-0 at the interval.

Waterloo reduced the lead at 83 minutes when midfielder Miodrag Kovacevic beat Vorkuta goalkeeper Oleksandr Musiienko to score the visitors’ only goal and it was 5-1 at the final whistle. 

Vorkuta has now scored 29 goals in five regular season games, with Tamniuk leading the way with eight.

Aldin Kukic opened the scoring for Hamilton City at 25 minutes for a 1-0 half-time lead for the home side at Heritage Field and it was 1-0 at the break.  Bojan Samardzija of Brantford Galaxy playing on the left wing equalized with a powerful drive from 25 yards that beat Hamilton goalkeeper Alexandar Nicolic and it was 1-1 at the 50th minute mark.

Kukic scored a second goal for Hamilton City, finding the net past Brantford goalkeeper Georgi Jovicic following a miscue in the goalmouth, a 2-1 lead for the home side at 76 minutes.  Samardzija struck his second goal at 88 minutes for the Galaxy to tie the game 2-2.

A third match scheduled for Saturday, Real Mississauga vs Kingsman scheduled for Huron Park at 7 pm, was postponed.

In the CSL Second Division, two players each scored four goals for FC Vorkuta B in an 11-1 rout of Serbian White Eagles B at the St. Roberts Field Saturday afternoon. Kris Kezik and Fadi Salback were the 4-goal marksmen in the season opener for both teams.

There is one game remaining in the CSL First Division weekend schedule with FC Ukraine United at home to Scarborough SC at Centennial Stadium, a 7.30 pm kickoff on Sunday evening.

STRIZOVIC LATE WINNER FOR SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES

A late goal by midfielder Vladimir Strizovic was enough to give Serbian White Eagles a narrow 1-0 victory over CSC Mississauga at Centennial Stadium, the only match played in the Canadian Soccer League Friday.

With most of the play in the midfield leaving few opportunities to find either net, a scoreless outcome loomed large until Serbian White Eagles winger Bozidar Tadic found Milos Scepanovic with a free kick.  Scepanovic moved the ball to Strizovic who beat Mississauga goalkeeper Akeem Henry for the winning goal at the 79th minute mark.

Scepanovic came close to increasing the score 10 minutes later with a powerful drive that narrowly missed the upper woodwork. Bozidar, a recent acquisition who played top-flight in Greece and other parts of Europe was dangerous on the left wing, but the score held at 1-0 at the final whistle.

CSC Mississauga, which struggled in its inaugural 2018 season, continued with a strong performance that produced a 4-0 victory over Kingsman on June 16.

“Our team played well despite the loss and especially considering we were missing four players in Europe as part of the Toronto Croatia entry in the Croatian World Club Championship,” explained CSC Mississauga GM Mile Milkovic following the final whistle. Milkovic was referring to the games about to be  played in Zagreb consisting of Canberra FC (Australia), SC Croat San Pedro (United States), NK Pajde Mohlin (Switzerland), Toronto Croatia (Canada), SV Slavonija Bern (Switzerland) and Vojvodina (Serbia). The competition is played every four years and Toronto Croatia has won two of the three times played to date. The Toronto roster  now in the Croatian capital consists of 22 players. The final is played on June 28.

With a 100 percent record averaging 6 goals per game, FC Vorkuta are off to a flying start in an attempt to capture top honors yet again this season.  In its first two campaigns -2017 and 2018 – the club named after an isolated community in northern Russia has won a First Division title, has gained a regular season runner-up position, has won the overall CSL championship and has so far  these early days of a new campaign demonstrated a determination to repeat, if not exceed these achievements.

Vorkuta is at home to SC Waterloo at the Ontario Soccer Centre, one of three games scheduled for  Saturday following  earlier encounters between Hamilton City and Brantford Galaxy at Heritage Field and a clash between Real Mississauga and Kingsman A at Huron Park.

Serbian White Eagles open the weekend at home to CSC Mississauga at Centennial Stadium on Friday night and the final game of the three-day schedule may be the most interesting when two teams with 100 per cent record, Ukraine United and Scarborough, come together also at the popular Etobicoke ground. Both teams have been impressive, with Scarborough conceding just 2 goals in four games and Ukraine United have allowed a single goal in its 2-game season so far. At least one team will end the match no longer perfect.
