TORONTO CROATIA FAVOURED TO HOLD TOP SPOT OVER THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND

The top of the table standings in the CSL First Division at the end of this coming weekend rests with Toronto Croatia and Brantford Galaxy. Croatia are on top with a narrow one-point margin over second place TFC Academy, while Brantford Galaxy, moves into the holiday weekend in fifth place.

Only these two teams of the top five will see action – Toronto Croatia visits Kingston FC on Saturday, while the Galaxy have two games, a trip to London with a game against the City at the TD Waterhouse Stadium on Friday night and a visit to Victoria Park for a clash with Brampton City Utd on Sunday afternoon.

TFC Academy, SC Toronto and York Region Shooters are off, so there is every good chance the current CSL champions Toronto Croatia will keep the top spot, although the Galaxy have an outside chance if they pick up enough points and Croatia falters.

<![CDATA[

A first half strike by Tihomir Maletic gave Toronto Croatia a 1-0 victory and top

position in an ever-changing CSL standings, while York Region Shooters cruised to an easy 6-2 win over Kingston FC and SC Waterloo slammed Brantford Galaxy 5-0, three games in the CSL First Division Sunday.

LATE GOAL GIVES MISSISSAUGA VICTORY, LONDON CITY NIPS NIAGARA 1-0 AND A TIE MOVES TFC TO THE TOP

A late goal gave Mississauga Eagles FC a 2-1 victory over St. Catharines Wolves, London City nipped Niagara United 1-0 and TFC Academy also scored a late goal to salvage a 2-2 tie in their home game against Windsor Stars, three games in the CSL Friday night.

Jose Melo scored at the 17th minute mark to put Mississauga Eagles into the lead at Club Roma in St. Catharines, he beat the Wolves goalkeeper Nicholas Palazzi from 12 yards, but the home side drew level at 38 minutes when midfielder William Janetos took a pass from the right wing to score from 12 yards and it was 1-1 at the break.

Antoine Paul struck the winner for the visitors at 89 minutes, the Mississauga defender headed home off a free kick out of reach of Palazzi and the 2-1 score held to the final whistle.

It was a well-played scoreless first half between London City and Niagara United at the TD Waterhouse ground in London, but the second half turned into a chippy affair in the second half following a goal at 50 minutes by defender Zvonko Bakula who found the net from close in off a corner kick.

Following several cautions, referee Rich Oliveira brought out the red card to dismiss Rudy Pikzinski of Niagara United following his second yellow card at 84 minutes and Bakula was shown the red card at 88 minutes following an untidy challenge on an opposing player. The game ended 1-0 in favour of London City.

Sergio Camargo opened the scoring for TFC Academy at the 20th minute mark at Downsview Park in Toronto, his first of two goals, but Windsor’s Joel Kabula tied the game 7 minutes later when he found the net from close in.

Windsor Stars took the lead at 41 minutes, a goal by forward Michael Eio and it was 2-1 at the interval.

TFC pressed for an equalizer in the latter stages of the game and the effort was rewarded with a tying goal from the penalty spot and the second goal for Sergio Camargo. Referee Yusri Rudolf ordered the kick when a TFC forward was brought down in the box and Windsor goalkeeper Anthony Santilli had little chance on the kick.

TFC Academy move up to the top position in the CSL First Division standings, they now have a 8-3-2 WLT record for 26 points, while Windsor Stars improve to 6-5-2 for 20 points.

BRANTFORD, KINGSTON, WATERLOO WIN SUNDAY…Toronto Croatia held to 1-1 tie

TFC Academy and SC Toronto share the top position in the CSL following a 1-1 tie between Toronto Croatia and SC Toronto and in three other games played in the CSL First Division Sunday, SC Waterloo scored an emphatic 4-0 victory over Serbian White Eagles, Kingston FC overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat North York Astros 2-1 and Brantford Galaxy nipped Windsor Stars, 1-0.

The Toronto Croatia 1-1 tie with SC Toronto lived up to its billing in a hard, well-played encounter at Centennial Stadium, a game that was scoreless until Marin Vucemilovic Grgic found the net at 80 minutes. He took a pass from forward Tihomir Maletic while closing in and it turned out to be a tap in for the go-ahead goal.

SC Toronto were reduced to 10 men at a crucial time of 87 minutes when Garard Ladiyou was cautioned for a second time to be shown the red card and sent off.

Despite the disadvantage, the visitors fought back and were rewarded with a tying goal by forward Alon Badat who scored at 93 minutes after receiving a cross from the left wing.

SC Toronto improve to a 7-1-4 WLT record for 25 points and are tied for the top position with TFC Academy in the CSL First Division standings, while Toronto Croatia drop to third position with a 7-1-3 record for 24 points.

SC Waterloo had a field day in defeating Serbian White Eagles at the Seagram Stadium in Waterloo and it was Adis Hasecic who opened the scoring for the home side at 19 minutes and that was followed nine minutes later when Drazen Vukovic made it 2-0 and Slavisa Ubiparipovic increased the score to 3-0 at 39 minutes – the score at the interval.

Vukovic added a second goal at 52 minutes for a 4-0 score, which held to the final whistle.

Midfielder Carlos Amorim opened the scoring for North York Astros at 37 minutes against Kingston FC at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York, the score at half-time.

Kingston forward Alex Campbell tied the game 1-1 at 52 minutes and Mademba Ba struck the winner from the penalty spot at 69 minutes following a pushing incident on Kingston’s Edgar Soglo inside the 18 yard line.

North York were reduced to 10 men when referee Scott Decker showed the red card to Davier Walcott at 72 minutes for serious foul play and the remainder of the game was scoreless to the final whistle, 2-1 in favour of Kingston FC.

A goal at 63 minutes by Brantford Galaxy midfielder Damion Scott was enough to earn his side three points in the game against Windsor Stars at Lions Park. Scott took a pass from Marco Machado to drive the ball from 20 yards into the bottom left corner past Windsor goalkeeper Anthony Santilli.

The goal broke open a game with few chances throughout, with Santilli and Galaxy’s Melford James Jr. both playing a solid game.

The win moved Brantford into a tie for third place in the standings, it was the Galaxy’s eighth win and they now have an 8-3-0 record for 24 points.

Brampton City Utd handed Montreal Impact Academy just their second defeat of the season and the first at home in CSL action Saturday, while Windsor Stars edged past Serbian White Eagles 2-1 and Niagara United played to a scoreless tie to give York Region Shooters their seventh tie of the season.

Following a well-played, almost scoreless first half, forward Alex Braletic put Brampton City Utd in the lead at 45 minutes against Montreal Impact Academy at the St Jean De Vianney ground in Montreal. It was a picture goal, a strong drive from 22 yards to the right of goalkeeper Jason Beaulieu for a 1-0 half-time in favour of the visitors.

Midfielder David Guzman increased the lead to 2-0 for Brampton, he struck from 12 yards to find the net and the score held to the final whistle in favour of the Toronto area team.

Windsor Stars struck early with a goal by Michael Lepera after just four minutes in the game with Serbian White Eagles at Windsor Stadium and that score held in a close contest until Viktor Anastasov equalized for the Toronto team at 68 minutes.

It was nine minutes later that Windsor forward Christian Mayorga collected the ball on the six yard line to find the net past Serbian Eagles’ goalkeeper Nikola Marojevic and that proved to be the winner with the score 2-1 at the final whistle.

Niagara United played most of the second half with 10 men to battle to a scoreless tie with York Region Shooters at Kalar Park after Rudy Pikzinski was shown the red card by referee Pereira for serious foul play ten minutes into the second half.

It was a hard played encounter with both goalkeepers John De Luca for the home side and Emanuelle Ameltonis for York Region Shooters playing a big part in a scoreless game.

It was a close encounter in the early stages of the TFC vs. Astros game at Downsview Park, but Academy midfielder Mario Orestano put the home side one-up at the 27th minute mark.

North York equalized at 44 minutes when midfielder Carlos Amorim found the net past TFC goalkeeper Angelo Cavalluzzo for a 1-1 score at the break.

FIVE CLUBS BID FOR TOP SPOT IN CSL FIRST DIVISION …separated by just two points

Toronto Croatia will probably need a win over SC Toronto to hold the top position in the First Division standings following this weekend’s games in the Canadian Soccer League.

Only two points separate five teams – Croatia, TFC Academy, SC Toronto, Brantford Galaxy and York Region Shooters – so the current CSL champions are in a precarious position, but can still retain top spot with a victory over the impressive SC Toronto side in what is an important game for both teams at Centennial Stadium Sunday night.

York Region Shooters have an impressive 5-game unbeaten streak going back to June 10 and they will be looking to stretch that even more at Kalar Park against Niagara United on Saturday.

There are 10 First Division games to be played through Sunday night and five games in the CSL Second Division.

The visitors were playing with 10 men during the second half after losing Olivier Rieutord who was shown the red card by referee Michael Izzo following a second caution at the 45th minute mark.

Kingston’s Mademba Ba equalized from the penalty spot at 69 minutes when Serbian Eagles goalkeeper Nikola Marojevic brought down Edgar Soglo of Kingston and referee Izzo had no hesitation in awarding the penalty for a 1-1 tie.

NEW-LOOK KINGSTON FC UPBEAT WITH ANNOUNCEMENTS…New coach, ownership, corporate support at press conference

It was there for all to see when Kingston FC players displayed a new-look uniform to reflect a new sponsorship, the introduction of a new head coach, some new players and a shuffle in ownership, all of which provided an upbeat mood to a press conference at the Invista Sports Centre at Kingston Friday.

Jimmy Hamrouni has resigned his position as president and coach of the club, “for personal and business reasons” explained chairman of the board Lorne Abugov, in making the announcement.

Of high interest was the introduction of the club`s new head coach, Colm Muldoon (pronounced column, like a newspaper column), explained journalist Joseph Scanlon, with Abugov a co-owner of Kingston FC, who emceed the proceedings.

Muldoon, a native of the Republic of Ireland with impressive UEFA coaching credentials, has playing and coaching experience in Ireland and the United States.

A physical exercise buff, Muldoon believes in a high level of fitness as a pre-requisite to winning games. “Soccer is a beautiful game and it’s a world game. To be good, you have to develop a lot of things – strength, endurance, technical ability, co-ordination and specific skills“, he emphasized. In private life, he has a science degree and is a plastics specialist and no doubt knows how to mould a team.

The club introduced a new sponsor in WTC Communications, an independent regional telecommunications company with strong ties to the Kingston community.

“WTC is thrilled to help bring professional soccer to the Kingston area”, said the company’s general manager, Steve Lynn, who signed a two-year deal described as a platinum sponsorship.

With just two wins at mid-season in its inaugural year in professional soccer, Abugov explained the need to strengthen Kingston FC’s roster. That process has started with the addition of two French-born players, Olivier Rieutord, a forward from Toulouse and Hugo Delmaire, a defender who played for the University of Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Other defenders signed are Ryan McCurdy, who played professionally with Linfield FC in Northern Ireland and Guyana national team player Julien Edwards.

Midfielder Mintcho Mintchev has also joined the club. Born in Bulgaria, Mintchev developed his skills with Nepean Hotspurs, just west of Kingston.

Abugov explained the new ownership is firmly committed to Kingston FC and professional soccer in Kingston. “We are extremely excited about the prospects of our club,” he said

But the chairman made it clear the club is seeking equity investment and an alliance with youth soccer in the region, both necessary if Kingston is to develop as a serious member of Canada’s future professional soccer community. “Joe and I are committed to investigate these areas during the next few weeks,” emphasized. Abugov.

Kingston FC visit Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke for a game with Serbian White Eagles Friday, while the reserve team is off until a visit to the St. Joan of Arc ground at Maple, just north of Toronto where they meet York Region Shooters B on July 29.

SC WATERLOO ENDS UNBEATEN RUN OF CURRENT CSL CHAMPS TORONTO CROATIA

A goal at 20 minutes of the first half by expansion club SC Waterloo put to an end the season-long unbeaten run of the current CSL champions Toronto Croatia, while two other games in the CSL Sunday ended in ties, a 4-4 score between York Region Shooters and Brampton City Utd and a 2-2 tie in the game between Montreal Impact Academy and Mississauga Eagles FC.

It was a left foot drive by Waterloo midfielder Drazen Vukovic that ended the Toronto Croatia streak at the Seagram Stadium in Waterloo and it ended the record of the last CSL First Division team to hold the distinction of being unbeaten during the current campaign. For the Waterloo Region side, the victory helped to make amends for the 6-1 loss in the hands of Toronto Croatia on May 27.

Toronto Croatia still hold to top position in the standings despite Sunday’s defeat, they have a 6-1-2 WLT record for 20 points, while SC Waterloo improve to a 4-6-0, good for 12 points

Forward Alexander King put Montreal Impact Academy in front 1-0 at 39 minutes against Mississauga Eagles at the St Jean De Vianney ground in Montreal after taking a cross from Wandrille Lefevre. The home side went ahead 2-0 when Impact first team defender Calum Mallace playing his first game for the academy side, headed in out of reach of Mississauga goalkeeper Kofi Oppong. It was 2-0 at half-time.

A win for the academy team looked secure until Jose Melo headed in for Mississauga Eagles at the 87th minute mark and Thomas McLean scored the equalizer at 91 minutes for the 2-2 final score.

It was a ding-dong struggle between York Region Shooters and Brampton City Utd at the Joan of Arc ground in Maple where the visitors gained then lost the lead throughout the game, beginning with a goal at 23 minutes when forward Milos Scepanovic beat York Region goalkeeper Camilo Benzi for a 1-0 score. Alex Braletic made it 2-0 for Brampton at 37 minutes, but the lead was cancelled out by goals from York Region forward Jason De Thomasis at 38 minutes, then Alex Trujillo at 44 minutes for a 2-2 tie before York Region’s Andre Rollins put the home side ahead 3-2 at the break.

Scepanovic scored his second goal and Brampton’s third to tie the game 3-3 at 85 minutes, then Brampton edged into the lead 4-3 on a goal by David Velastagui three minutes later. Andre Manders of York Region levelled the scores 4-4 shortly before the final whistle.

York Region Shooters played the last 28 minutes short handed after referee Justin Tasev showed the red card to Andre Stewart for violent conduct.

It is York Region Shooters sixth draw in 10 games, they now have a 3-1-6 record for 15 points, while Brampton City Utd have a 4-2-3 record, also 15 points.

There was one game in the CSL Second Division Sunday night:

St. Catharines Wolves B 1,Brantford Galaxy B 1
