In games played September 26, what was almost the last play of the match, a fighting effort paid dividends for Hamilton City when midfielder Ilija Bajcetic headed in from a free kick to tie the score 1-1 with FC Vorkuta in the second game of Saturday’s CSL double header at Centennial Stadium. In the opener, Scarborough defeated Brantford Galaxy 3-2.

Serhii Melnyk opened scoring at the 10th minute mark for Vorkuta following a right wing cross for Melnyk and a well-placed header into the net out of reach of Hamilton goalkeeper Alexandar Nicolic. The hard fought encounter appeared to be a victory for Vorkuta until the last minute equalizer.

Hamilton City has completed its regular season with a 4-2-3 record for 14 points, while Vorkuta has a 3-3-1 WTL record for 12 points in third position in the CSL First Division standings and the north Toronto team will complete its regular season against Scarborough on Saturday, October 3.

Brantford’s Aleksandar Bozovic headed in from a corner kick to cut the score to 2-1 at the 52nd minute and scored a second to tie the game 2-2 at 70 minutes.

McIntosh scored the winner for Scarborough at the 80th minute, a 3-2 score at the final whistle.

The victory was Scarborough’s fifth of the season, a 5-0-2 record to lead the First Division with 15 points with the one game remaining against FC Vorkuta.
The two games on October 3 to complete the regular season are:

DAVID SCHIPPER – HAVE SOCCER SHOES WILL TRAVEL

DAVID SCHIPPER – HAVE SOCCER SHOES WILL TRAVEL

Have soccer shoes, will travel.

Former Canadian Soccer League player David Schipper may be anywhere right now, but wherever he is, he is a good candidate for our ‘Where Are They Now’ series of promising former CSL players.

David Schipper was born and raised in the coastal city of San Diego, California, which is real soccer country, enough to stir memories of the high profile San Diego Sockers of the original North American Soccer League. It’s also the team which Canadian explosive striker and member of Canada’s Hall of Fame, the late Mike Stojanovic, played while a member of the Canadian national team and was a staunch supporter of the 2006 launch of Serbian White Eagles in the CSL.

Schipper first made a name for himself playing for Arizona Wildcats at the University of Arizona in Tucson before venturing north to Seattle to play for Seattle Impact in the Major Indoor Soccer League.
It was Mexico, however, where the midfielder, sometimes full back, made his first attempt into professional soccer, a pre-season trial with Ascenso MX side Dorados de Sinaloa, a club just purchased by the more substantial Xolos de Tijuana. That tryout proved to be unsuccessful and was followed with a trip to Cancun for a trial with Atlante who play in the same league, but there also, Schipper was not offered a contract.

Undeterred, the San Diego native returned to his hometown and was signed by the then indoor Sockers to play in the club’s reserve team. Schipper then signed for FC Force at Bonita, California, in the National Premier Soccer League, fourth tier in the United States and it was during this time his ambitions gave thought to Canada.

He ventured north In 2015 and was successful in signing a three-year contract with York Region Shooters of the Canadian Soccer League, playing 56 games, scoring 17 goals through to the 2017 season. He took a diversion during his contract period on loan at the end of the 2015 going to Goiatuba Esporte Clube of Brazil, playing 12 games during Canada’s off season.

York Region Shooters won the regular season First Division title by an impressive 18 points margin over second place FC Ukraine United in 2016, which turned out to be Schipper’s first title win since turning pro. The high flying Shooters, which had conceded just 10 goals during the regular season, was surprisingly eliminated in the semifinal of the championship playoffs, a penalty kicks decision to Hamilton City.

York Region Shooters’ GM and assistant coach John Pacione recalls Schipper as “being a good player who played an important part in what was a successful period for the team. He was also a nice guy – we were pleased to have him,” he explained recently.

Schipper sought and gained a release after two years with the Shooters on receiving offers to play in Europe and signed a one year contract with Albatroz SC of Latvia to gain his second championship when Albatroz won the Latvian Second Division.

Schipper is Jewish, played for Team USA in the Maccabiah Games in Israel in 2017 and from time to time represented the United States in Futsal.

In 2018 Schipper took off for New Zealand to join Southland United in that country’s winter league and a top three finish was the highest in the team’s history. The well-travelled player also has a contract with Southern United FC of New Zealand’s summer league. After flying back to San Diego for surgery following an injury, he has returned to New Zealand and is now in his second season.

Exclusive: FIFA launches internal probe of alleged corruption – sources

Soccer’s world governing body FIFA has launched an internal investigation of alleged corruption, two people familiar with the matter said, in a development that may signal greater cooperation with criminal probes by U.S. and Swiss authorities.

Members of FIFA’s executive committee were briefed on the internal investigation at a closed-door meeting in Zurich last month, said the sources, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, a U.S. law firm, is conducting the investigation, which is running parallel to the probes by authorities in the United States and Switzerland, the sources said. The results of the investigation are expected to be shared with the authorities, they added.

EXPANSION CLUBS FACE TOUGH OPPOSITION ……..The Weekend Games

Expansion teams fared well against established CSL teams last weekend,  the opening weekend of a new Canadian Soccer League season with Toronto Atomic and Brantford Galaxy both registering wins, while SC Scarborough held London City to a 3-3 draw.

This coming weekend may prove to be a more severe test for the newcomers, however, with SC Scarborough taking on Toronto Croatia with its long history of success locally and overseas, while Toronto Atomic may find London City a handful with the high scoring Marin Vucemilovic-Grgic  up-front. Vucemilovic-Grgic opened his season with a hat-trick on Saturday after winning the CSL scoring title in 2014. And Brantford Galaxy won’t have an easy time against neighboring Burlington SC following the way Burlington fought back from a 2-0 half-time deficit to hold Serbian White Eagles to a 2-2 tie on Sunday.

The SC Waterloo vs York Region Shooters clash at Worrior Field in Waterloo will be a game worth watching, Waterloo 2013 CSL champions, while the Shooters are the current title holders following their remarkable unbeaten run of 21 games through the entire 2014 season. The York Region side will be out to make amends for the opening season loss on home ground to Toronto Croatia, a game that wrapped up the two-day Soccer Fest at the St. Joan of Arc ground last Sunday.

There is one change to the complete season schedule with the Brampton City Utd  vs Serbian White Eagles game moved from Victoria Park to Avondale Stadium in the same complex.
