SIX PLAYOFF SPOTS DECIDED FOLLOWING WEEKEND RESULTS

First Division winners SC Toronto and York Region Shooters battled to a 2-2 tie, while the game between Capital City FC and Mississauga Eagles ended scoreless.  In three other games in the CSL Sunday, wins came for TFC Academy, a 7-0 rout of St. Catharines Wolves, Brampton City Utd, defeated Windsor Stars 4-1 and Toronto Croatia gained a 6-2 victory over North York Astros.

Six of the eight playoff spots have now been decided.

Toronto Croatia secured second position in the league standings as a result of their win over North York Astros at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke and the result was never in doubt following the 2-0 score at half time following an own goal after 3 minutes when Astros` John Jung steared the ball into his own net and a second goal scored by Croatia`s Niko Pisa just before the interval.

Hugo Herrera increased the Croatia lead to 3-0 at 47 minutes, Tihomir Maletic made it 4-0 on a breakaway  at 62 minutes, his 17th of the season, Pesa struck his second and Croatia`s fifth for a 5-0 lead at 76 minutes and Bozenko Lesina made it 6-0 at 79 minutes.

The Astros scored twice in the closing minutes when Kurt Ramsey scored from the penalty spot after forward Nordo Gooden was fouled in the box, a 6-1 score and defender Steven Craig hit the second for a 6-2 result at the whistle.

York Region Shooters took a 1-0 lead on a goal by midfielder Mario Orestano six minutes into the game at the St. Joan of Arc ground at Maple, just north of Toronto and Alexandros Halis tied the score 1-1 for SC Toronto at 26 minutes, his 10th goal of the season.

The visitors were down to 10 men at the 28th minute mark when referee David Barrie pulled out a red card for midfielder David Alva and almost on half-time Massimo Mirabelli beat York Region goalkeeper Adam Majer for a 2-1 visitors` lead at the interval.

It was an even contest into the second half and the Shooters tied the score 2-2 at 65 minutes when defender Chris Turner found the net past SC Toronto ‘keeper Scott Cliff. The 2-2 score remained to the final whistle.

SC Toronto improve to a 19-2-3 WLT record for 60 points, having secured the CSL First Division title last week, while York Region Shooters are at 12-6-6 for 42 points and with two games remaining, their end of the regular season objective is to capture fourth position in the standings.

It was a windy Sunday at the Terry Fox Stadium in Canada’s capital and the scoreless tie between Capital City FC and Mississauga Eagles produced few opportunities to score due in part to the sound goalkeeping at both ends, Clint Irwin for the home side and Melford James Jr. for Mississauga.

Capital City will finish third in the standings as a result of the tie, while Mississauga Eagles FC now have an 11-10-3 record for 36 points and are still bidding for a playoff berth while 7th in the standings.

Brampton forward Jeremy Shepherd opened the scoring at the 24th minutes mark at Victoria Park in Brampton for a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Marcos Nunes increased the Brampton lead with a drive that found the corner of the net past Windsor goalkeeper Justin Danelon, 2-0 at 47 minutes, but the visitors bounced back with a goal by Stephen Ademolu at 62 minutes, he headed into the net past Brampton ‘keeper Roy Blanche, a 2-1 score.

Nunes scored his second of the game, 3-1 for Brampton at 64 minutes and Judah Hernandez scored at 87 minutes for 4-1 final score.

Brampton have an 11-9-3 record for 36 points, with two games remaining in the regular season schedule.

Forward Tristan Jackman scored the opening goal for TFC Academy in the 7-0 rout of St. Catharines Wolves in the game played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, for a 1-0 score at half-time and Sergio Camargo made it 2-0 two minutes after the interval.

Stefan Vukovic struck his first of two goals to make it 3-0 at 58 minutes, forward Omari Morris made it 4-0 at 60 minutes and Vukovic scored his second 8 minutes later for a 5-0 lead. Vukovic now has 17 goals for the season, tied in the CSL scoring race with Richard West of Brampton City Utd and Tihomir Maletic of Toronto Croatia.

Forward Michael Bilak scored the sixth TFC Academy goal for a 6-0 score at 73 minutes. It was the most spectacular goal of the afternoon catching the top right corner from outside the box and well out of reach of  St. Catharines goalkeeper Tony Visca.

Camargo scored his second and number 7 for the academy team when he moved through four players to score from close in, a 7-0 final score.

TFC Academy are at 7-12-2 for 23 points and have five games remaining.

The six teams to clinch a playoff berth are: SC Toronto, Toronto Croatia, Capital City FC, York Region Shooters, Serbian White Eagles and Montreal Impact Academy. Two more are to be decided.

MONTREAL IMPACT ACADEMY SECURE PLAYOFF SPOT WITH 2-1 VICTORY WHILE DEFENDING CHAMPIONS GALAXY GO DOWN IN WINDSOR

Current CSL champions Brantford Galaxy received a surprise set-back in their bid for a playoff berth, losing 4-1 in the hands of Windsor Stars at Windsor Stadium Saturday night, while in a game played earlier in the day, Montreal Impact Academy gained an important 2-1 win over Mississauga Eagles FC at the Saputo Stadium in Montreal.

Forward Aaron Byrd opened the scoring for Windsor Stars at the 13th minute and increased the lead to 2-0 at the 35th minute mark.

Midfielder Nenad Begovic reduced the lead to 2-1 with a goal for the Galaxy at the 54 minutes, but that was short-lived when one minute later at 55 minutes David Kadoic increased the home lead to 3-1, scoring on a breakaway.  Kadoic again beat Brantford goalkeeper Vladimir Markotic at 71 minutes when he found the net with a drive from 20 yards for a 4-1 score which remained to the final whistle.

Montreal Impact took the lead on a goal by Kevin Luarca at the 41st minute mark, a 1-0 score in favour of the home side at the interval.

Mississauga forward Darragh Roe put the ball past Montreal goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau to equalize at 61 minutes and Chris-Michel Rumuri struck the winner for the Quebec side at the 63rd minute mark and the score remained to the final whistle.

The win clinches a playoff berth for Montreal Impact Academy, now involved in a three-way tie for fourth place in the standings. They join SC Toronto, Toronto Croatia, Capital City FC, York Region Shooters and Serbian White Eagles, with two spots still to be decided.

With two games remaining in their regular season schedule (against Montreal Impact Academy and Capital City FC), Saturday’s defeat puts the defending CSL champions Brantford Galaxy in a difficult position to secure one of those two remaining berths. The remaining two positions are being pursued also by Mississauga Eagles FC, Brampton City Utd and TFC Academy.

Eight teams will enter into a home and away quarterfinals series, to get underway during October. There will be one game in each of the two semifinals and one game for the CSL Championship Final.

SC TORONTO CAPTURE FIRST DIVISION TITLE

SC Toronto captured the CSL First Division title with a 5-2 come-from-behind victory over Brampton City Utd, while Serbian White Eagles and Toronto Croatia played to a 1-1. In one other game scheduled for Friday night, the London City vs. TFC Academy game was called off following heavy rain at Cove Road in London.

It was the 19th win of the season for SC Toronto and the win came in spectacular fashion after being down 2-0 to a gritty and determined Brampton squad battling for a playoff spot.

Brampton’s Oswald Adu opened the scoring at the 7th minute mark at Lamport Stadium in downtown Toronto and the visitors made it 2-0 from the penalty spot at 20 minutes, the goal scored by forward Kevin Omokhua.

SC Toronto’s Jarek Whiteman scored his first of two goals at 33 minutes to reduce the lead to 2-1 and Alexandros Halis scored his first of two goals to tie the game 2-2 at 38 minutes.

It was 2-2 at the break, but not before referee Richard Oliveira ordered Toronto head coach Carmine Isacco out of the game for persistent dissent.

SC Toronto went ahead 3-2 on the second goal by Halis, his 11th of the season at 48 minutes and Whiteman also scored his second and also his 11th of the season with picture goal  at the 51st minute mark to increase the home lead to 4-2.

Whiteman’s goal came off a corner kick and the Toronto forward volleyed from 15 yards for one of the most impressive strikes of the season.

Andy Garcia was shown the red card by referee Oliveira following a second caution to the Brampton midfielder, the ejection coming at the 79th minute mark.

Massimo Mirabelli scored SC Toronto’s fifth goal at 83 minutes for a 5-2 final score.

The win, coupled with a 1-1 tie for second place Toronto Croatia, gave SC Toronto the first division title with three games remaining for both teams. SC Toronto have a nine-point margin over Croatia, but the 19th win for SC Toronto secured the title – it’s the total wins criterion used as a tie-breaker should the teams finish the season tied on points. Toronto Croatia can tie on points at the conclusion, but they are unable to match the total wins.

The Toronto Croatia tie with Serbian White Eagles was the right outcome from a game played with highly attractive soccer with good pace at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke. It was Croatia that took the lead on a goal by Hayden Fitzwilliams at the 38th minute mark. Fitzwilliams showed good footwork to maneuver himself into a position to shoot after picking up the ball headed out from a corner kick. He beat Serbian Eagles’ goalkeeper Milos Djurkovic with a low shot into the corner of the net.

 It was 1-0 at half-time.

Serbian White Eagles pressed in a second half that became more physical as the game progressed and the home side broke through at 65 minutes when Nikola Milosevic lifted the ball into the Croatia box, the ball was picked up by midfielder Milan Rakic who was brought down by Croatia goalkeeper Antonio Ilic.

Referee Yursi Rudolf pointed to the spot and Milos Scepanovic scored the tying goal, his ninth of the season.

Toronto Croatia have a 15-3-5 WLT record for 50 points, while Serbian White Eagles are at 11-5-9 for 42 points and now in fourth position in the standings.

JIMMY HAMROUNI TAKES ONE MORE STEP INTO CANADIAN PRO SOCCER

Jimmy Hamrouni believes in laying the groundwork.

A former professional and national team player in the North African nation of Tunisia, Hamrouni announced the launch of a professional soccer team for Kingston, Ontario last July and used City Hall of that community to make the announcement.

Kingston will play in the CSL’s first division to kickoff  May, 2012.

“But, there’s lots to do before kickoff day and we intend to be ready so that this wonderful community will be proud of their soccer team,’’ said Hamrouni while explaining an upcoming CSL second division game between his present team, Prospect FC and TFC Academy II, an academy team from Toronto FC of Major League Soccer.

Queen’s University is the venue for this coming Saturday’s clash, the first official game to be played by CSL teams in Kingston, one of Canada’s most picturesque communities.

Prospect FC travelled to Maple, just north of Toronto, to play exhibition games against CSL reserve teams almost weekly in 2010 and this year was entered officially into the CSL second division where they have been playing against the second string of some of the toughest in North America.

“We’ve learned a lot, but it’s all part of the process to take on professional teams next year that have been around for decades,” he said.

Toronto Croatia, formed 1956 and Serbian White Eagles, about the same time, have won the North American championship. London City 1973, St. Catharines Wolves are storied teams in Canada’s only professional soccer league.

Hamrouni doesn’t know what to expect from his opposition on Saturday, but he does know that Toronto FC’s academy system at one time recently included 13 players listed by Canada’s U17s and seven actually made it to the U17 World Cup.

He knows too, that they are some of Canada’s best young players because six from the academy (Henry, Cordon, Morgan, Stinson, Makubuya and Lindsay) all have graduated to first team pro contracts.

Hamrouni knows what soccer academies are all about — he has a presence in several locations in Ontario and Quebec and will soon add a soccer academy for girls. His daughter, Layla, plays for St. Joseph‘s College of Maine.

He’s planning to take a team to the Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup in February, an international showcase event with teams from three continents. He’d like fans to come along and plans an attractive package, all inclusive flight, hotel to encourage.

It’s all part of laying the groundwork that will lead to next year’s launch, but this weekend it’s Prospect FC at the Tindall Field at Queen’s University in Kingston, a 7 pm kickoff on Saturday, September 24.

To contact Prospect FC, soon to be known as Kingston FC, call 613 770-6400 or 613 276-1690

SERBIAN EAGLES CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT WITH 1-0 VICTORY WEDNESDAY

Serbian White Eagles clinched a playoff berth with a 1-0 victory at Club Roma in St. Catharines, the only game played in the CSL Wednesday night.

It was the last regular season home encounter for St. Catharines and the 1-0 defeat means the Garden City team fail to make the playoffs with two away games remaining in their five-month long campaign.

The game was an hour late kicking off due to heavy rains affecting the playing surface and lighting in the region, but referee Mach Maloche got the game underway  at 9 pm and it turned into a well-played, close contest despite the conditions underfoot.

The home side had several opportunities to take the lead, particularly by forwards Matthew Contino, the Wolves’ leading scorer and Dana Heimbecker, but the first half ended 0-0.

Serbian White Eagles struck the only goal of the match at 68 minutes following a hesitation in the St. Catharines defence that allowed midfielder Kirie Dimitrov an opportunity to step in to put the ball past goalkeeper Tony Visca into net from close range.

St. Catharines pressed for an equalizer and came close when Tony Mermigas fired the ball over the bar.

At 76 minutes, the home side were reduced to 10 men when referee Maloche showed the red card to midfielder Rudy Pikuzinski following an untidy challenge that was judged to be Serious Foul Play.

Milos Djurkovic looked solid in the Serbian Eagles goal during late pressure from St. Catharines and the game ended 1-0.

Serbian White Eagles move up the table to fifth position with a 11-5-7 WLT record for 40 points and St. Catharines have a 5-15-4 record for 19 points.

SECOND PLACE TORONTO CROATIA LOSE TO MISSISSAUGA EAGLES SUNDAY

Toronto Croatia dropped an important 2-1 decision to Mississauga Eagles FC and in four other games played in the CSL Sunday, York Region Shooters defeated Brampton City Utd 2-1, Montreal Impact Academy cruised to a 5-1 result over St. Catharines Wolves, TFC Academy edged Brantford Galaxy 3-2 and London City scored a 1-0 victory over Windsor Stars.

The loss by Toronto Croatia may be a crucial one while bidding for the First Division title with SC Toronto.

It was Mississauga midfielder Jose Melo who opened the scoring and also struck the winner for the home side at the Hershey Centre in Missisauga. He took a pass from Shawn Brown to drive the ball from 18 yards past Croatia goalkeeper Antonio Ilic at the 17th minute mark, but just three minutes later Toronto Croatia equalized on a goal by Bozenko Lesina and it was 1-1 at half-time.

The winning goal came when Brown was brought down just inside the 18 yard line and referee Yusri Rudolf pointed to the spot. Melo made no mistake with his shot to lift the score to 2-1 at 77 minutes, a 2-1 result for Mississauga Eagles at the final whistle.

It was Mississauga’s 11th win of the season and they are in seventh position in the standings with four games remaining.

Toronto Croatia has a 15-3-4 record for 49 points, training SC Toronto by seven points with each team also having four games remaining.

York Region Shooters went ahead at the St. Joan of Arc ground on a goal at two minutes by forward Jason Di Thomasis, a low shot from just outside the box which found the centre of the net, it was 1-0 at half-time.

Striker Kadian Lecky increased the lead to 2-0 at 73 minutes, his 13th of the season, then Lecky was red-carded by referee Archie Korbiel on receiving a second yellow card at 77 minutes.

Brampton midfielder Marcos Nunes reduced the lead to 2-1 at 84 minutes, the final score in favour of York Region Shooters.

The Shooters are the fourth team to secure a playoff berth, they now have an improved 12-6-5 record for 41 points and are in fourth position in the standings.

Midfielder Wendrille Lefevre scored twice for Montreal Impact Academy in the game against St. Catharines Wolves at the Marie Victorin Stadium in Montreal, he found the net at 44 and 49 minutes.
