BRANTFORD GALAXY RECOVER FROM 2-0 HALF-TIME DEFICIT TO WIN 4-2 WEDNESDAY

Brantford Galaxy came from a 2-0 half-time deficit to defeat St. Catharines Wolves 4-2 at Club Roma in St. Catharines, the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Wednesday night.

It was a remarkable collapse by the home side which looked at the interval very much in a position of winning its first home game of the season and first game since defeating London City 2-1 on June 3.

St. Catharines midfielder Matthew Cain opened the scoring for the Garden City team with a goal at the 37th minute mark and Matthew Contino made it 2-0 at 41 minutes on a penalty awarded by referee Justin Tasev. The penalty followed a hand ball infringement by Galaxy defender Stanko Karacic — it was 2-0 at half-time.

Galaxy forward Dalibor Mitrovic accounted for the first of four second half goals by the visitors, he struck with a drive from 25 yards at 49 minutes.

St. Catharines suffered a set-back when 10 minutes later they were down to 10 men when defender Joe Conte was shown the red card by referee Tasev for Serious Foul Play.

Brantford’s Kyle Grooteboer intercepted a St. Catharines pass to beat goalkeeper Claudio Perri to tie the score 2-2 at 73 minutes, Mitovic scored his second goal to make it 3-2 in favour of the Galaxy at 80 minutes and Ranko Golijanin sealed the win for Brantford when he scored from the penalty spot, a 4-2 final score. The penalty was awarded when the home side’s Matthew Waddington brought down Golijanin in the box.

It was the Galaxy’s eighth win of the season for 22 points from 17 games to put the current CSL champions on the edge of a playoff position and the win repeats a victory by Brantford over St. Catharines Wolves on July 17, a 5-3 score at Lions Park.

SUNDAY WINS FOR BRAMPTON, CROATIA AND MISSISSAUGA EAGLES TIGHTEN RACE AT THE TOP

Brampton City Utd, Toronto Croatia and Mississauga Eagles FC all scored victories while Capital City FC and York Region Shooters suffered defeats Sunday, to tighten the race at the top of the CSL First Division.

Toronto Croatia continued their impressive form to be now undefeated in five games, four of which were wins, to blank London City 2-0 at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke Sunday. Brampton City Utd scored a 4-3 victory over Capital City FC at Victoria Park and Mississauga Eagles FC downed York Region Shooters, 2-0, at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.

Toronto Croatia forward Bozenko Lesina scored both goals for his side in the 2-0 shutout of London City, the goals coming at the 36th and 49th minutes and both scored in similar fashion with shots from outside the box.

Toronto Croatia are now in fifth position in the standings as a result of the win.

Brampton City Utd led 4-1 at one stage in the game against Capital City FC before the game ended 4-3.

Brampton took the lead after 4 minutes on a goal by Kevin Omokhua who collected a free kick from outside the box to drive the ball past Capital City ‘keeper Clint Irwin.

The home side’s Andrew Da Silva made it 2-0 at 19 minutes, heading in from a corner kick, and forward Richard West made it 3-0 for Brampton at the 24th minute mark. It was West’s 13th goal of the season.

Capital City forward William Beauge cut the lead to 3-1 with a goal at 33 minutes when he collected a pass to survive a call for offside and beat Brampton goalkeeper Kodzo Awitor from 12 yards. It was 3-1 at the break.

West struck his second goal at 54 minutes to increase Brampton’s lead to 4-1 and that was his fourth of the weekend after scoring twice in a 4-1 Brampton win over TFC Academy on Friday night. West now has 14 goals for the season.

Forward Sullivan Silva scored Capital City’s second goal at 61 minutes – his seventh of the season and Junior Ellis scored for the visitors at 85 minutes for a 4-3 score which held to the final whistle.

Midfielder James Langlois opened the scoring at the 21st minute mark for Mississauga Eagles FC in their win over York Region Shooters and the game could have gone either way until Jose Melo struck at 87 minutes to assure the Erin Mills-based team the 2-0 victory.

The Mississauga Eagles’ forward took a pass from Shawn Brown before driving into the York Region net from 25 yards.

CSL First Division games resume on Wednesday when St. Catharines Wolves host Brantford Galaxy, an 8 pm kickoff at Club Roma.

Montreal Impact Academy picked up three points with an important 3-1 win over North York Astros, while SC Toronto and Capital City FC battled to a scoreless tie and in one other game played in the CSL Saturday, the Windsor Stars vs. Serbian White Eagles game was abandoned at 39 minutes due to lightning and the game will be replayed.

Serge Dinkota opened the scoring for Montreal Impact Academy at the 23rd minute mark at Esther Shiner Stadium, but North York forward Nordo Gooden tied the score 1-1 six minutes later and it was 1-1 at half-time.

Montreal’s Alessandro Riggi put the Quebec side 2-1 up at 54 minutes and the game was in doubt until Riggi struck again at 92 minutes for a 3-1 score, the result at the final whistle.

Riggi’s goals were both outstanding drives from outside the penalty box which left Astros’ goalkeeper Enea Perego with little chance.

Montreal defender Amine Meftouh was shown the red card at 83 minutes by referee Archie Korbiel for ‘Denying an Obvious Goalscoring Opportunity’.

Montreal move into second position in the standings with 35 points following their victory, the 10th win of the current league campaign.

SC Toronto and Capital City FC fought throughout in a game that ended scoreless at Lamport Stadium. Capital City defender Casey Cordray was sent off in that game on receiving a second yellow card at 82 minutes.

In one other game played in the CSL Saturday, the Windsor Stars vs Serbian White Eagles clash at Windsor Stadium was abandoned at 39 minutes by referee Angelo Gertsakis when lightning in the area persisted with little opportunity to abate.

FRIDAY VICTORIES FOR BRAMPTON, CROATIA AND SHOOTERS WHILE ST.CATHARINES TIE 1-1 WITH MONTREAL

York Region Shooters defeated London City 3-1, Toronto Croatia blanked Mississauga Eagles FC 3-0, Brampton City Utd also won decisively, a 4-1 victory over TFC Academy and in a fourth game in the CSL Friday night, Montreal Impact Academy were held to a 1-1 tie by St. Catharines Wolves.

Forward Kadian Lecky was a big reason for York Region Shooters win over London City at Cove Road in London, he struck twice — 10th and 11th of the season – starting with the opening goal at eight minutes and a second at the 28 minute mark.

The 1-0 opening score by Lecky was following by a tying goal for London City from Elvir Gigolaj at 15 minutes. It was 2-1 at half-time.

Carlo Rivas made it 3-1 at the 47th minute mark and both sides had chances to add to the score during the second half — including a disallowed goal by London’s Thomas Beattie which was called back by the linesman – but the 3-1 score in favour of York Region held until the final whistle.

Hayden Fitzwilliams led Toronto Croatia to their eighth win of the season with two goals at Centennial Stadium, he opened the scoring at the 34th minute after collecting a pass from the right wing to poke the ball just inside the post from close range and Fitzwilliams made it 2-0  with a left foot drive to beat Mississauga goalkeeper Melford James Jr at 87 minutes.

Toronto Croatia midfielder Alex Arbelo made it 3-0 for the home side at 93 minutes, a well-placed free kick from just outside the 18 yard line, the ball going in off the post.

Brampton City Utd won their eighth game of the season following a scoreless first half at Lamport Stadium in Toronto and it was the Academy team that went ahead on a penalty kick by striker Stefan Vukovic at 49 minutes, a penalty called by referee Gianni Facchini from a tripping incident just inside the box. It was Vukovic’s 13th goal of the season.

Brampton scored four goals in succession and it all started when defender Nathan Kelsey of TFC Academy was shown the red card at 75 minutes by referee Facchini for denying an opponent an obvious goalscoring opportunity. Brampton forward Richard West scored from the spot to tie the score 1-1 and it was West’s 11th goal of the season.

Forward Jeremy Shepherd put Brampton in front 2-1 at 87 minutes, two minutes later West scored his second goal and his 12th of the season to make it 3-1 and David Velastegui made it 4-1 for Brampton at 93 minutes, a 4-1 final score.

Montreal Impact Academy midfielder Kevin Luarca-Echeverria scored the opening goal for a 1-0 lead over St. Catharines Wolves at Club Roma in St. Catharines, he drove it past St. Catharines ‘keeper Claudio Perri at the 14th minute mark.

Matthew Contino tied the score 1-1 from the penalty spot just three minutes later for St. Catharines, a penalty called by referee Richard Oliveira when defender Matthew Waddington was brought down inside the box.

SC TORONTO SEEK LEAGUE TITLE HONOURS WITH 3-0 WIN – Mississauga Eagles FC defeat London City 1-0

SC Toronto took a big step toward league title honours with a 3-0 victory over lowly North York Astros Sunday afternoon and in a later game Mississauga Eagles FC squeaked past London City by a 1-0 score. The third game in the CSL First Division, Brampton City Utd vs. York Region Shooters, was postponed due to ground conditions following heavy rains.

SC Toronto forward Jarek Whiteman struck twice in his side’s defeat of the Astros, he opened the scoring by taking a rebound from three yards to put the ball in the net past Astros’ keeper Enea Perego and following a 1-0 score at the interval, increased the lead to 2-0 at 61 minutes with a drive from 18 yards.

Midfielder Dane Roberts made it 3-0 for SC Toronto at 87 minutes when he broke through to drive the ball inside the left post.

Mississauga Eagles FC had more of the play than the 1-0 result suggests when they improved their mid table position with a victory over London City at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.

Forward Dave Simpson of the Eagles got the winner  when he found the left corner of the net from 6 yards at 63 minutes following a scoreless first half, a half during which the Mississauga team played with 10 men following the early ejection of  midfielder Ivan Juric for Serious Foul Play.

A third game scheduled for Sunday afternoon, Brampton City Utd vs York Region Shooters at Victoria Park in Brampton, was postponed at the ground following heavy early morning rains in the Toronto area.

SC TORONTO MARCHES ON AT THE TOP – Capital City FC wins while Montreal vs Serbian Eagles tie.

SC Toronto widened the gap at the top of the First Division with a 2-1 victory over Mississauga Eagles while Capital City FC defeated London City 5-1 and Montreal Impact Academy were held to a 2-2 tie by Serbian White Eagles, three games in the CSL Friday night.

SC Toronto made it clear they are going to be tough to dislodge from the top of the First Division after taking all three points in the game with Mississauga Eagles played at Lamport Stadium in Toronto’s west end.

The Toronto side took the lead during a close, well played first half and it was forward Andrea Lombardo who found the net at the 18th minute when he picked up a well placed through ball to the right of the Mississauga goal and carefully slotted it just inside the far post.

Mississauga Eagles’ forward Shawn Brown scored the equalizer at the 25th minute mark when he drove the ball into the net from close range past Scott Cliff in the SC Toronto goal. It was 1-1 at half-time.

SC Toronto defender Gerard Ladiyou scored the winner for the home side, the goal coming off a corner kick at the 61 minute mark.

Both sides had opportunities to score in the latter stages, but none more than Mississauga’s Dave Simpson who volleyed the ball over the crossbar with only the goalkeeper to best from 8 yards. It was 2-1 at the final whistle.

Capital City FC continued their impressive bid for First Division honours and they took the lead at the 26th minute mark at Cove Road in London, a goal by forward Junior Ellis who found the net from 6 yards.

Akil DeFreitas made it 2-0 for the visitors when he scored from the penalty spot at 30 minutes, Kenny Caceros increased the lead to 3-0 four minutes later and midfielder Collin Harrison scored a fourth for the Ottawa team, a 4-0 score at the break.

Capital City forward Garrett Webb increased the lead to 5-0 at 46 minutes and Younan Samra struck from the penalty spot for a London City goal at 64 minutes, a 5-1 final score.

Montreal Impact Academy is a top contender for league honours and they played to a 2-2 with Serbian White Eagles who are on the fringes and need points for a higher placing.

Montreal took the lead on a goal by midfielder Wandrille Lefevre who found the net after 10 minutes, but Serbian Eagles’ forward Alex Braletic tied the game 1-1 at 38 minutes following some good play by Milos Scepanovic.

Braletic put his side into a 2-1 lead with a goal at 50 minutes, his seventh of the season, and following missed opportunities by the home side, Montreal Impact Academy tied the game on a goal by defender Maxim Tissot at 67 minutes and the game ended 2-2.

Two goals by the CSL First Division leading scorer Stefan Vukovic played an important part in lifting TFC Academy to a 5-1 victory over St. Catharines Wolves in the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Wednesday night.

Following a well-played scoreless first half, Vukovic opened the scoring at the 49th minute mark and TFC midfielder Sergio Camargo made in 2-0 seven minutes later

Vukovic increased the lead to 3-0 at 61 minutes and Dimitri Omphroy scored a TFC Academy goal at the 69th minute mark, deflecting a free kick past St. Catharines goalkeeper James Draper for a 4-0 lead.

The goals for Vukovic were his 11th and 12th of the season.

Academy defender Joshua Gross scored a fifth goal for the visitors at 85 minutes, a 5-0 score and Gross put the ball past his own goalkeeper, Angelo Cavelluzzo, to score an OG for St. Catharines and it was 5-1 at the final whistle.

SC TORONTO, YORK REGION SHOOTERS SCORE DECISIVE VICTORIES SATURDAY

SC Toronto gave themselves a real confidence booster with an emphatic 4-0 defeat of league-leading Montreal Impact Academy in Montreal, while York Region Shooters kept pace in the standings by dismissing Windsor Stars 4-1, two games in the CSL Saturday.

Midfielder Carlos Nogueira opened the scoring at the 5th minute mark for SC Toronto for a 1-0 score at half-time at the Marie Victorin ground and Alexandros Halis beat Montreal goalkeeper Dom Provost to make it 2-0 at 61 minutes.

Jarek Whiteman struck twice for the visitors, his first at 78 minutes for a 3-0 Toronto lead, then again 10 minutes later to make it 4-0, the final score.

SC Toronto completed the double on Montreal Impact Academy following a 2-0 early season win in Toronto on May 13.

The Toronto team has the most productive record of all 14 teams in the CSL First Division with nine wins from 11 games played. They suffered just one defeat, a narrow 1-0 loss to Toronto Croatia on June 10. SC Toronto now has five games in hand over the two top teams in the league, Montreal and York Region Shooters, both having played 16 games.

York Region Shooters recovered from an early 1-0 deficit in their home encounter with Windsor Stars at the St. Joan of Arc ground in Maple and went on to score four goals for the 4-1 victory.

Striker Aaron Byrd put the border team 1-up at 11 minutes and the lead held until York Region’s Jason De Thomasis equalized at 39 minutes with a drive from 25 yards.

Midfielder Dino Gardener put the Shooters 2-1 in the lead at 62 minutes and Des Humphrey increased the lead to 3-1 seven minute later with a volley from 18 yards.

VICIKNEZ SIZZLER SINKS ASTROS

A late goal gave Serbian White Eagles a 1-0 victory over the hapless North York Astros in the only game played in the CSL Friday night, while at London the game with Windsor Stars was postponed due to the condition of the playing surface at Cove Road following heavy rain the previous night.

The patented free kick for which Serbian Eagles forward Sasa Viciknez has become known – from just outside the penalty box and a little to the side – was the highlight of an entertaining tussle between the home side attempting to recover from two losses the previous weekend at Montreal and Ottawa and the Astros still bidding for their opening win of the season.

While Serbian Eagles had more opportunities to put the ball in the net, Astros played well enough for periods during which it was difficult to comprehend  the North York side had failed to win in 12 attempts since starting the campaign so promisingly with an impressive 2-2 away tie in their opener on May 21.

Heading for another tie, the Astros suffered that sinking feeling yet again shortly after their defender Diego Benzi upended Viciknez just outside the box and referee Facchini gave the free kick and a yellow card to Benzi.

Viciknez, at one time a top flight player in Europe, struck a sizzling left footer into the roof of the net well out of reach of Astros’ goalkeeper Enea Perego and that goal proved to be the winner at the 78th minute mark.

Serbian Eagles had a goal disallowed during the first half and late in the game Benzi received a second yellow card for using his hand on the ball while going up for a header and was dismissed.

One other game scheduled for Friday night, the London City vs. Windsor Stars southwestern Ontario derby, was postponed due to ground conditions and will be rescheduled and a Second Division game between London City B and Brantford Galaxy B, was also called off.

MONTREAL IMPACT ACADEMY JUMP FOUR POINTS AHEAD

Montreal Impact Academy went four points ahead at the top of the First Division standings with a 3-0 victory over Serbian White Eagles at the Saputo Stadium in Montreal Saturday.

Academy midfielder Chris-Michel Rumuri opened the scoring with a goal at the 16th minute mark for a 1-0 lead at the interval and Michelot Hyacinthe made it 2-0 at 47 minutes.

Serbian Eagles fought to get back into the game during the second half but gave up a penalty kick at 80 minutes for Felix Cardin to find the net past Eagles’ goalkeeper Milos Djurkovic. The 3-0 score held to the final whistle.

Montreal jumps four points ahead of York Region Shooters with 26 points, close behind are SC Toronto and Capital City FC, each with 25 points. SC Toronto has five games in hand over Montreal and four games in hand over York Region Shooters.

Marin Vucemilovic-Grgic opened the scoring  for the home side at three minutes and Richard West tied the game for Brampton at 42 minutes, a 1-1 score at the interval.

Brampton’s Judah Hernandez struck a 25 yard volley to put his side in the

lead at 48 minutes before Arbelo scored the equalizer.

Brampton lost defender Danny Velastegui who was sent off by referee

Richard Oliveira at 92 minutes.

London City were heading for a narrow 1-0 win until Brantford tied the

game at 88 minutes at Cove Road in London.

Following some early pressure by the home side, London went ahead

at 14 minutes, a goal by forward Younan Samra who held back to avoid

being offside, then collected the ball to drive into the net, a 1-0 at half-time.

Although London hit the post, Brantford looked stronger in the second half,

and missed two chances to equalize before forward Mark Reilly found the

bottom left hand corner of the net to make it 1-1, the final score.
