TOP FOUR STEP UP THE ACTION……the weekend games

<![CDATA[The four leading teams now favoured to win the CSL First Division, Kingston FC, York Region Shooters, Toronto Croatia and Brampton City Utd, all see action this coming weekend to continue a struggle for a title bid that has been a highlight of the season throughout.

Kingston FC have held the top spot most of the time and any change in that order as generally been a temporary one. The team from eastern Ontario is going into the weekend on top again, and with a substantial three-point lead.

While Brampton trail their three rivals, they also have games in hand over all three, an advantage that will come in handy as the regular season moves closer to the end and intensifies.

Kingston FC are inviting coaches from all sports to attend their home game on Sunday and they will be admitted free of charge. Anyone accompanying a coach will receive entry to the interesting clash with Astros Vasas FC, at half-price.

One Second Division game – Serbian White Eagles B vs. Kingston FC B, scheduled for this coming Saturday at Eglinton Flats in Toronto, has been postponed until September 28.

Rogers TV have listed the tape-delayed Toronto Croatia vs SC Waterloo First Division game played on August 18 to be shown this coming Sunday, August 25 at 6 pm. Please check listings in your area of Ontario.

FIRST HALF GOALS GIVE BURLINGTON MIDWEEK VICTORY

Burlington SC won their fifth game of the season with a 2-0 away victory over St. Catharines Wolves at Club Roma, St. Catharines, the only game played in the CSL Wednesday night.

Burlington were aggressive early and found the net after just five minutes when forward Darko Thomas scored from 10 yards for a 1-0 lead.

Nicholas Lindsay increased the lead to 2-0 just 11 minutes later, collecting the ball well inside the penalty box to drive the ball just inside the left post past St. Catharines goalkeeper Matthew Greco. It was 2-0 at the break and it was the ninth goal of the season for Nicholas.

The second half was a more even contest with Antonio Stranges prominent for the Garden City side and coming close to scoring, but any chance of a serious recovery were lost at 86 minutes when the home side were reduced to 10 men.

Referee Allison Enright showed the red card to Angelo Beatrice of St. Catharines following a second caution. The game ended, 2-0.

Burlington improved their chances of a playoff spot with a win that produced a 5-9-0 record for 15 points and eighth position in the table, while St. Catharines are at 4-10-0 following the loss.

BRAMPTON, SHOOTERS KEEP PACE WITH SUNDAY VICTORIES…. Toronto Croatia held

Milos Scepanovic hat-trick helped Brampton City Utd defeat Windsor Stars 3-1, while York Region Shooters downed Burlington SC 4-1 to keep pace with Kingston FC at the top of the CSL standings, and in the late game Sunday night Toronto Croatia failed to find the net in a scoreless tie with SC Waterloo.
David Kadoic opened the scoring for Windsor Stars at Victoria Park in Brampton at 11 minutes when he drove the ball from 10 yards to the right of Brampton goalkeeper Eugenio Garro.
Milos Scepanovic struck his first goal at 36 minutes to tie the score 1-1, making no mistake with a penalty awarded by referee Manuel Orellana for hand ball. It was 1-1 at the break.
Scepanovic was fouled in the box at 75 minutes and took another penalty to score his second goal for a 2-1 Brampton lead and 12 minutes later, Brampton were down to 10 men when forward Marcos Nunes was shown the red card by referee Orellana for violent conduct.
Scepanovic completed his hat-trick at 92 minutes when he took a pass following a breakaway to drive the ball past Garro, a 3-1 final score.
It was goal number 11 this season for Milos Scepanovic and the win gives Brampton a 10-3-0 WLT record for 30 points and fourth in the standings, while Windsor Stars have a 6-6-3 record for 21 points.
Forward Ryan Dummett – usually a solid defender but playing up front – had York Region Shooters off to a good start at the St. Joan of Arc ground with a goal at the 15th minute mark. Dummett took a pass from Mario Orestano he drove the ball past Burlington ‘keeper Vladimir Vujasinovic for a 1-0 lead.
Nicholas Lindsay tied the score for Burlington at 34 minutes, heading in a pass from Jamal Allison and the 1-1 score held to the half-time whistle.
Substitutions for the second half for the home side brought results with a goal at 72 minutes by midfielder Francisco Javier Perez who headed in from a cross by Dummett and Javier Perez scored a second and York Region’s third 10 minutes later when he found the net from a rebound to make it 3-1.
Shooters forward Kadian Lecky completed the scoring two minutes later, he found the lower right corner of the net after taking a pass from Orestano and the game ended 4-1 in favour of York Region Shooters who now have a 10-3-1 record for 31 points and tied for second position in the standings, while Burlington SC are at 4-9-0 for 12 points.
Toronto Croatia were held to a scoreless tie by SC Waterloo at Centennial Stadium, a game with lots of midfield play but few scoring opportunities.
Ranko Golijanin was the main threat for SC Waterloo but strikes were off the mark and forward Tihomir Maletic drove an opportunity over the bar early in the second half.
Toronto Croatia have a 9-2-4 record for 31 points, tied for second in the standings with York Region Shooters, while SC Waterloo have a 5-5-4 record for 19 points and a mid-table 7th position in the standings.

WAIGANJO HAT-TRICK LEADS KINGSTON…….London City blank St. Catharines 2-0

Midfielder Paul Kihara Waiganjo led Kingston FC with a hat-trick to a 4-2 away victory over Niagara United, while London City continued to climb the CSL First Division with a 2-0 home win against St. Catharines Wolves, two games in the CSL Saturday.
Waiganjo opened the scoring for Kingston at the 22nd minute mark at Kalar Park in Niagara Falls, he found the net off a rebound following a save by Niagara goalkeeper Brad Gemmell and the Kenya-born Waiganjo struck again just six minutes later to give the visitors a 2-0 lead, the score at half-time.
Striker Guillaume Surot increased the lead to 3-0 for Kingston at 56 minutes, again after Gemmell made saves from two attempts on the home goal – it was Surot’s 17th goal of the season.
Niagara’s Andy Tiedt reduced the lead to 3-1 with a goal at the 58th minute mark and following good attacking play at both ends, Waiganjo completed his hat-trick at 73 minutes for a 4-1 Kingston lead following a breakaway by the visiting team.
Tiedt scored his second goal just before the final whistle for a 4-2 victory, the 11th of the season for a league-leading Kingston with 34 points.
Marin Vucemilovic Grgic found the net past St. Catharines goalkeeper Matthew Greco at 66 minutes to open the scoring for London City at the Hellenic Centre in London, a 1-0 lead over St. Catharines Wolves following a well-played, scoreless first half.
Forward Younan Samra made it 2-0 at 77 minutes, a score that held to the final whistle.

It was the sixth win for the southwestern Ontario side, now tied for fifth place in the First Division standings.

One other game scheduled for Centennial Stadium this weekend – Toronto Croatia vs Waterloo SC on Sunday night – is expected to be played as work continues to complete the repairs before Sunday.
There is one change in the Second Division schedule with a switch of venue for the Serbian White Eagles B vs Toronto Croatia B game, previously to be played at Eglinton Flats on Saturday at 7 pm, has been moved to Soccer City, Etobicoke the same day with an earlier 5 pm kickoff.

KINGSTON BACK ON TOP…..Windsor, Niagara, St. Catharines also win

Kingston FC are back on top of the CSL standings following a 4-2 victory over SC Waterloo, Windsor gained their second win of the weekend with a 1-0 defeat of York Region Shooters, St. Catharines picked up an away win at Astros Vasas by the same score and Niagara United won 2-0 over Burlington SC in a game cut short by a power failure, four games in the CSL Sunday.
It was scoreless at the Queen’s West Field in Kingston until added time of the first half when Kingston midfielder Catalin Lichioiu took a pass from Kihara Waiganjo to drive the ball into the top corner from 30 yards.
Waterloo’s Drazen Vukovic equalized four minutes into the second half and Kingston took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Guillaume Surot who chipped the ball over Waterloo goalkeeper Imad Hakura at the 68th minute mark. It was Surot’s 16th goal of the season.
Adis Hasecic equalized for Waterloo at the 77th minute mark – goal number 11 for the season – and Lichioiu struck his second of the game at 84 minutes for a 3-2 Kingston lead and this was followed almost immediately with a tap in by Kingston’s Edgar Soglo for a 4-2 Kingston victory.
Kingston take over top position in the standings with 10-3-1 WLT record for 31 points, one point ahead of Toronto Croatia, while SC Waterloo have a 5-5-3 record for 18 points and are in sixth position.
Windsor Stars gained their second win in three days with a 1-0 defeat of York Region Shooters at Windsor Stadium Sunday, to follow the 3-1 victory over London City on Friday.
Returning Wade Allen struck the winner for Windsor at the 9th minute to follow the two goals scored on Friday. The striker re-signed for the Stars last week following a period of time playing in the U.S. Allen scored three goals in seven games for Windsor in 2012.
York Region Shooters (9-3-1 for 28 points) are in third place in the standings following the loss, while Windsor Stars improve to 6-5-3 for 21 points and 5th in the table.
St. Catharines Wolves scored just on half-time to defeat Astros Vasas FC 1-0 at Esther Shiner Stadium, a goal by Mohammed Mohammed who beat Astros’ goalkeeper Antal-Andras Toth with a drive from 10 yards into the bottom right corner. Mohammed was playing his first game after being transferred from Burlington earlier in the week.
Astros Vasas has several near misses in their attempt to change the outcome of the game, but at 71 minutes were down to 10 men when defender Vincenzo Sasso was shown the red card by referee Ramee Arbaji for violent conduct.
Goals by Tyler Hibbs at 32 minutes and Derek Paterson four minutes later came at the right time for Niagara United in their game with Burlington SC at Nelson Stadium in Burlington, a game abandoned at 62 minutes following a power failure in the stadium.
The visitors will gain the 2-0 victory by a league rule that allows a score to stand if a game is abandoned following completion of the first half and the team leading is not responsible for the abandonment.

WADE ALLEN RETURNS WITH TWO GOALS IN 3-1 WINDSOR VICTORY

Forward Wade Allen returned to the Windsor Stars line-up as a new signing earlier this week to find the net twice in a 3-1 victory over London City, the only game played in the CSL Friday.
Allen, who was a member of the border team in 2012, opened the scoring at 35 minutes when he collected a pass from Stephen Ademolu to catch the right side of London goalkeeper Vladimir Markotic who had little chance to make a save. It was 1-0 at the break.
London City equalized with a picture goal at 49 minutes from a free kick outside of the box, a well placed drive into the top corner by Marin Vucemilovic Grgic, his ninth of the season.
Allen struck his second at the 71st minute mark for a 2-1Windsor lead and with the home side forcing the play during which Ademolu and midfielder Alexander Rickett were prominent, Michael Pio found the net at 75 minutes for a 3-1 lead, and the score held up to the final whistle.
One other game scheduled for Friday night, Serbian White Eagles vs. Burlington SC, was postponed due to the playing surface at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke being under repair following damage caused by the flooding of the ground on July 8.

SHOOTERS, KINGSTON AIM FOR THE TOP……Two more postponments at Centennial Stadium

With two of the top four teams seeing action this weekend, Kingston FC (at home to SC Waterloo) and York Region Shooters (visiting Windsor Stars), both have an opportunity if they achieve a victory on Sunday to move ahead of Toronto Croatia in the CSL First Division standings to continue a week by week ever changing race for the league title.
Toronto Croatia are without a game due to their home ground of Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke still under repair following the severe flooding of July 8 and the home game against Brampton City Utd scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed.
The ground closure has also affected the Serbian White Eagles vs Burlington SC encounter previously set for Friday night, this game has also been called off and is to be played late in the season.
For the eight teams underneath the runaway top four it may develop into a fight for one of the four remaining playoff berths from a total of eight if the present trend continues, and while some clubs are faltering at this stage of the season, Astros Vasas FC is a club on the improve. They will have an opportunity to be seen this weekend by the visiting Hungarian Secretary of State for Sport in that eastern European country, Lajos Kü , who will be present at Sunday’s game for a ceremonial kickoff.
Lajos Kü played for Videoton, Ferencvárosi TC, Club Brugge K.V. and SC Eisenstadt. He played for Brugge KV against Liverpool in the European Cup Final of 1978, but is well-known also for gaining a silver medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics and being a midfielder for Hungary in UEFA Euro 1972.

TORONTO CROATIA PRECARIOUSLY ON TOP….Brampton nip Serbian Eagles 1-0

Toronto Croatia won their second game of the weekend and ninth of the season to assume the top position in the CSL First Division following a 4-0 victory over SC Waterloo Sunday night.

But it’s a precarious lead as just three points separate the top four clubs and these clubs appear to be setting the remaining eight teams adrift to settle the four spots left for playoff positions – the top eight teams qualify for the post-regular season competition leading to the CSL Championship.

Midfielder Jarek Whiteman opened the scoring for Toronto Croatia at 41 minutes at Warrior Field in Waterloo, he drove the ball into the net from 25 yards following a save by Waterloo goalkeeper Imad Hakura. It was 1-0 at the break.

Defender Josip Keran made it 2-0 at 53 minutes for the visitors, his fifth goal of the season and Hayden Fitzwilliams increased the lead to 3-0 when he found the net at 80 minutes. Tihomir Maletic scored the final goal to make it 4-0 at 87 minutes – he scored following a rebound off the goalpost. It was Maletic’s seventh of the season.

Toronto Croatia move up with a 9-2-3 WLT record for 30 points, while SC Waterloo are at 5-4-3 for 18 points.

It was a well-played and hard-fought encounter at Victoria Park in Brampton where the home side secured an important three points with a 1-0 narrow victory over Serbian White Eagles.

Defender Danny Velastegui scored on the half-hour mark for Brampton, he drove the ball past Serbian White Eagles goalkeeper Scott Cliff following a scramble in the box and the goal held up until the final whistle.

Brampton improve to 9-3-0 in fourth position in the standings, while Serbian White Eagles are at 3-8-1 for 10 points.

There were two games in the CSL Second Division Sunday:

SECOND DIVISION
Brampton City Utd B 4, Serbian White Eagles B 0
Niagara United B 4, St. Catharines Wolves B 1

PIO LEADS WINDSOR WITH TWO GOALS …….second half Niagara collapse

Forward Michael Pio led Windsor Stars with two goals to a 4-1 away victory in the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League’s top division Saturday night.

Played at the Kalar Sports Park at Niagara Falls, Windsor took a 1-0 lead on a goal at 21 minutes by Michael Watson, an opener that started with a free kick outside the box for Windsor Stars and following a good passing play, Watson struck the ball past Niagara goalkeeper John DeLuca from six yards. It was 1-0 at the interval.

Niagara’s Tyler Hibbs tied the game 1-1 at the 60th minute mark – he beat Windsor goalkeeper Dejo Olagbegi from 10 yards following a deflection – before Pio scored his first goal four minutes later for a 2-1 Windsor lead.

Pio struck his second goal at 79 minutes to give the Windsor forward his sixth of the season and a 3-1 lead in a game turning quickly in favour of the visitors.

Midfielder Alexander Rickett rounded the scoring to 4-1 for Windsor Stars at 84 minutes, the score at the final whistle.

The win improves Windsor to a 4-5-3 WLT record for 15 points, moving the border team to 7th in the standings, while Niagara United are at 1-9-3 for six points and without a win since June 14.

There was one game in the CSL Second Division Saturday when London City B defeated SC Waterloo B, 6-3.

TORONTO CROATIA TRIUMPH IN LONDON…Nudge closer to the top

Toronto Croatia nudged a little closer to the top with a 2-0 defeat of London City at the Hellenic Centre in London, the only game in the CSL Friday night.

Played in torrential rain most of the first half, the defending CSL champions attacked early and scored after 10 minutes on a goal by forward Kresimir Prgomet who took a pass from Tihomir Maletic to find the net from five yards. It was Prgomet’s eighth goal of the season and the first half ended 1-0.

London pressed for an equalizer in the second half, but the score stood until the 90th minute when Augustin De Medina made it 2-0 for the visitors. De Medina drove the ball from 25 yards to beat London goalkeeper Vladimir Markotic, the ball entering the bottom left corner of the net.

The win moved Toronto Croatia into third place with an 8-2-3 WLT record for 27 points, a point behind leaders Kingston FC and York Region Shooters. London City now have a 5-6-3 record for 18 points.

A second game scheduled for Friday night, Serbian White Eagles vs. SC Waterloo, was postponed on Thursday due to the condition of the playing surface at Centennial Stadium damaged by flooding on July 8. The game is expected to be played sometime in September.

TORONTO CROATIA CAN TAKE TOP SPOT……One game postponed in CSL weekend schedule

– With the league leaders Kingston FC and York Region Shooters without a game this weekend, Toronto Croatia with two games on schedule has an opportunity to take the top position in the CSL First Division.

But not an easy proposition for the current CSL champions while they take a swing through southwestern Ontario in an attempt to overcome London City in London on Friday and SC Waterloo at Warrior Field in Waterloo on Sunday night.

In-form Waterloo in particular, will be difficult as they move closer to a serious bid for the title and out to make amends for a tough 1-0 loss to York Region Shooters on July 28, a game that could have gone either way.

Brampton City Utd are hoping to improve their position near the top with a win from their home encounter with Serbian white Eagles at Victoria Park on Sunday.

Serbian White Eagles will be idle on Friday night following a last minute postponement of their home game against SC Waterloo, a game called off Thursday when it was announced the surface at Centennial Stadium has not yet recovered from the water damage following serious flooding on July 8.

In a well-played entertaining friendly at Kingston Thursday afternoon, CSL league leaders Kingston FC and the touring Swedish team Gute FC played to a 3-3 draw.

FIRST HALF MIDWEEK VICTORY FOR ASTROS VASAS …..Erik Gulyas leads with two goals

Astros Vasas FC won their fourth game of the season with a 3-2 victory over St. Catharines Wolves in the only game played in the CSL Wednesday.

All goals were struck in the first 45 minutes and the first came early – just one minute after the game got underway when forward Erik Gulyas hit the ball from five yards against the right post with St. Catharines goalkeeper Matthew Greco helpless as the ball entered the net.

Gulyas was on hand to score the second goal for the visitors 13 minutes later when he struck the rebound from Toth who punched out a first attempt on goal. It was a 2-0 Astros lead and the third of the season for Gulyas.

Jose Melo made it 3-0 at the 20 minute mark – he headed in his fourth goal of the current campaign.

St. Catharines started a recovery when Brett Larocque scored his fourth of the season at the half-hour mark, the goal starting with a free kick before the St. Catharines forward collected the ball to beat Astros Vasas goalkeeper Antal Andres Toth, a 3-1 score.

The Garden City side kept up the pressure in an effort to get on even terms and a second goal came at 34 minutes by Antonio Stranges during a skirmish in front of the Astros goal. It was 3-2 at the break and 3-2 at the final whistle, but not before the woodwork played a part during attempts to equalize by the home side during what turned out to be a scoreless second half.

Astros Vasas FC are rewarded with a 7th place in the standing as a result of the victory, they now have a 4-8-2 record for 14 points and climbing, while St. Catharines Roma Wolves are at 3-8-0 with nine points.

YORK REGION SHOOTERS MAKE IT EIGHT IN A ROW…Toronto Croatia rebounds while Brampton falls to London City

York Region
Shooters extended their winning streak to eight games, Toronto Croatia bounced
back with a victory over Burlington SC and Brampton City Utd fell to London
City, three games in the CSL Sunday.

It was
scoreless for most of the hard-fought contest at Victoria Park in Brampton with
the first goal coming at 78 minutes when London City midfielder Harris Faziagic
opened the scoring for the visitors, a well-taken goal while cutting in from
the right wing to drive the ball in off the post away from a beaten Camilo
Benzi in the Brampton goal.

Just six
minutes later, Benzi was shown the red card by referee David Di Pasquale who
ejected the Brampton goalkeeper for Violent Conduct.

Brampton
pressed to get on even terms in the latter stages, but London increased their
lead when Jefferson Omide Agaiha scored into an empty net at 99 minutes while
substitute Brampton goalkeeper Euloge Kodzo Awitor was caught out of position.

The defeat
is a set-back for the home side while bidding for the First Division title. The
GTA side are third in the standings with an 8-3-0 for 24 points, while London
City improve with a 5-5-3 record for 18 points.

It was a
chippy encounter at the St. Joan of Arc ground in Maple where the home side
York Region Shooters eked out a 1-0 victory over SC Waterloo to extend their
winning streak to eight games, but it was all in doubt until the final whistle.

The first
half was scoreless but not without incident with referee Ramee Arbaji extended
to keep the game under control. York Region
Shooters opened the scoring at 65 minutes, a goal by midfielder Ali Hamam, his
sixth of the season. Hamam drove the ball from 12 yards on to a Waterloo
defender and the ball deflected to enter the net to the right of goalkeeper
Imad Hakura.

It was a close
contest through the second half and
Waterloo had an opportunity to tie the game from the penalty spot when referee
Arbaji called a foul inside the box at the 94th minute mark, but
Drazen Vukovic hit the post with the Shooters goalkeeper Adrian Ibanez well
beaten.

The eight
game winning streak gives York Region a 9-2-1 record for 28 points, tied with
Kingston FC for the top position. SC Waterloo has a 5-3-3 record for 18 points
and still very much in contention.

It was a
ding-dong affair at Nelson Stadium in Burlington where the lead changed hands
starting with Burlington scoring a go-ahead goal against Toronto Croatia at the
sixth minute mark, a goal by midfielder Nicholas Lindsay.

Tihomir Maletic tied the game 1-1 for Toronto
Croatia at the 18th minute mark, the score at half-time, and the prolific striker again beat Burlington
goalkeeper Vladimir Vujasinovic at 55
minutes for a 2-1 Croatia lead. The goals were Maletic’s 5th and 6th
of the season.

Lindsay
