BRAMPTON DEFEATS MISSISSAUGA EAGLES 1-0 WEDNESDAY

Brampton City Utd nudged closer to a playoff berth with a 1-0 victory over Mississauga Eagles FC at the Terry Fox Stadium in Brampton, the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Wednesday night.

Forward Milos Scepanovic struck the all-important goal for the home side at 64 minutes following a scoreless first half during which both sides came close to finding the net with frequent attacks at both ends. Scepanovic collected a pass from the right wing to drive the ball from 25 yards just inside the right post, out of reach of Mississauga goalkeeper Fiore Costa. The goal, which was Scepanovic’s 13th of the season, stood up through to the final whistle.

Referee Michael Anthony Izzo showed the red card to Defender Denny Velastagui of Brampton and Brandon Wellington of Mississauga following an altercation late in the first half.

The win improves Brampton to an 8-8-4 WLT record for 28 points, eighth position in the standings with two games remaining. The team from north-west of Toronto is one of seven teams bidding for one of the two remaining spots in the CSL Championship playoffs. The top eight enter the quarter-finals mid-October.

Mississauga Eagles FC have a 7-8-5 record for 26 points, still in the running for a playoff berth, but with a diminished chance of being one of the top eight following Wednesday’s loss.
