YORK REGION HAS RUNNER-UP SPOT…..Extraordinary Astros Vasas game well worth the price of admission

York-RegionsThere were two First Division games to end the CSL regular season Sunday, with York Region Shooters gaining the runner-up position with a 1-0 victory over Kingston FC and Astros Vasas ended on a winning note with a 4-1 win over Windsor Stars.

The Astros Vasas 4-1 defeat of Windsor Stars at Esther Shiner Stadium Sunday afternoon is a once in a while story that befits the last day of the regular season, a game in which a goalkeeper scored a goal and a player who scored two goals also received two yellow cards, but only after he scored one of his goals directly from the centre spot to resume the game following half-time.

Matthew George, the goalkeeper for Astros Vasas opened the scoring for the home side from the penalty spot, a penalty ordered by referee Justin Tasev at the 40th minute mark, but midfielder Adam Philip of Windsor Stars tied the game 1-1 four minutes later, the score at the break.

Astros’ forward Jose Melo gained most of the attention in a game of unusual circumstances, however, when he resumed play for the second half at the centre circle by driving the ball straight at the opposing side’s goal – and scored. Windsor goalkeeper Josh Rogers was unable to stop the shot and it entered the net to give Astros Vasas a 2-1 lead.

Enio Perruzza, the game announcer, recalled after the final whistle that the last time he’s aware of a goal being scored from the centre circle when a game is being re-started, was in 1988. “It was Hector Marinaro who did it, he was playing for the Toronto Blizzard and he noticed the opposing goalkeeper wasn’t paying attention – one kick and it sailed into the net,” he said. Argentine-born Marinaro was one of the great imports of Canadian soccer with a professional background in Europe, South and Central America.

Astros Vasas increased their lead to 3-1 with a goal from forward Evan James at 53 minutes and Melo scored his second and Astros’ fourth at 83 minutes before receiving a second caution – a second yellow card – then shown the red card by referee Tasev.

Astros’ fans who enjoyed the unusual event were heard to ask the date of the next game with the Astros. Next spring, they were told on leaving the ground.

Francisco Javier Perez scored the only goal for York Region Shooters in their 1-0 victory over Kingston FC at Maple, just north of Toronto, the last game of the regular season. The goal came at the 8th minute mark when Perez took a pass from Richard West to drive the ball into the net from 10 yards to the left of Kingston goalkeeper Jaroslav Tesar.

Kingston FC opened the scoring at Warrior Field in Waterloo with a goal by striker Guillaume Surot who scored from the penalty spot at the 40th minute mark following a foul in the penalty box and the ejection by referee Marie-Soleil Beaudoin of Waterloo defender Jake Inglis. It was Surot’s 24th goal of the season and it was 1-0 at the break.

Forward Mademba Ba made it 2-0 for the visitors at 84 minutes, the score at the final whistle and a victory that lifted Kingston three points clear at the top of the First Division standings.

The home side had an edge in the first half at Nelson Stadium, but Burlington failed to take the lead when Nikola Stanojevic missed a penalty. The spot-kick was called by referee Benjamin Jacobs at 25 minutes when Astros Vasas goalkeeper Matthew George brought down Burlington’s Darko Thomas in the box. It was scoreless at the break.

Astros’ forward Evan James opened the scoring when he found the net past Burlington goalkeeper Vladimir Vujasinovic at the 48th minute mark, but Burlington tied the score 1-1 at 75 minutes on a goal by Storm Wishart.

James struck the winner for the visitors at 88 minutes, a 2-1 victory at the final whistle for the North York side, a win that improved their record to 7-11-2 for 23 points, while Burlington are at 6-13-0 for 18 points.

ASTROS VASAS UPSETS BRAMPTON 2-1 SUNDAY ….lightning forces cancellation Waterloo vs York Region

Astros Vasas FC upset Brampton City Utd with a well-deserved 2-1 away victory, while a second game scheduled in the CSL First Division Sunday, SC Waterloo vs York Region Shooters, was called off shortly before kickoff time due to lightning.

Brampton City Utd pressed early to keep up their strong bid for the CSL First Division title, but it was Astros Vasas that struck first with a goal by recently acquired midfielder Erik Luptak at 37 minutes when he picked up the ball outside the 6-yard line to drive into the net to the right of Brampton goalkeeper Camilo Benzi. The goal held up for a 1-0 score at the interval.

Brampton midfielder Thomas McLean equalized at the 64th minute mark with a drive from just outside of the penalty box that left Astros Vasas goalkeeper Matt George with little chance when it hit the top right corner of the net.

Brampton lost defender Mirko Medic at 83 minutes, he was sent off  after receiving a second caution from referee Steve Depiero and two minutes later Jose Melo struck the winner for visitors when he beat Benzi from five yards for a 2-1 Astros Vasas victory.

Brampton’s Thomas McLean was also shown the red card just before the final whistle.

It was the fifth victory for Astros Vasas and the win improved their chance of a playoff spot as they moved into eighth  position in the standings with a 5-10-2 WLT for 17 points, while the defeat was a set-back for Brampton despite their impressive 12-4-0 record in second place in the standings, and the defeat is the first since July 28.

One other First Division game scheduled for Sunday, the SC Waterloo vs York Region Shooters clash, was called off by referee Scott Decker due to persistent lightning in the area – the game will be rescheduled – and there was one Second Division match Sunday when St. Catharines Wolves B defeated Toronto Croatia B by a score of 4-1.

FIRST HALF MIDWEEK VICTORY FOR ASTROS VASAS …..Erik Gulyas leads with two goals

Astros Vasas FC won their fourth game of the season with a 3-2 victory over St. Catharines Wolves in the only game played in the CSL Wednesday.

All goals were struck in the first 45 minutes and the first came early – just one minute after the game got underway when forward Erik Gulyas hit the ball from five yards against the right post with St. Catharines goalkeeper Matthew Greco helpless as the ball entered the net.

Gulyas was on hand to score the second goal for the visitors 13 minutes later when he struck the rebound from Toth who punched out a first attempt on goal. It was a 2-0 Astros lead and the third of the season for Gulyas.

Jose Melo made it 3-0 at the 20 minute mark – he headed in his fourth goal of the current campaign.

St. Catharines started a recovery when Brett Larocque scored his fourth of the season at the half-hour mark, the goal starting with a free kick before the St. Catharines forward collected the ball to beat Astros Vasas goalkeeper Antal Andres Toth, a 3-1 score.

The Garden City side kept up the pressure in an effort to get on even terms and a second goal came at 34 minutes by Antonio Stranges during a skirmish in front of the Astros goal. It was 3-2 at the break and 3-2 at the final whistle, but not before the woodwork played a part during attempts to equalize by the home side during what turned out to be a scoreless second half.

Astros Vasas FC are rewarded with a 7th place in the standing as a result of the victory, they now have a 4-8-2 record for 14 points and climbing, while St. Catharines Roma Wolves are at 3-8-0 with nine points.

KINGSTON GO THREE POINTS CLEAR…..Serbian Eagles and Astros Vasas also score victories Saturday

Kingston FC took a three-point lead at the top of the CSL First Division following a 2-0 defeat of St. Catharines Wolves, while Astros Vasas FC  and Serbian White Eagles both scored important victories in a bid for playoff spots, three games in the CSL Saturday.

Kingston had a distinct edge in the play throughout and opening the scoring at the Kiwanis Park in St Catharines with a goal by midfielder Jason Massie at 23 minutes. Massie collected a pass inside the box to drive into the net from 10 yards to the left of  St.Catharines goalkeeper Matthew Greco. It was Massie’s eighth goal of the season and it was 1-0 at the break.

Forward Mademba Ba struck the second goal for the visitors at 74 minutes when he headed in a cross from the right for a 2-0 final score to give Kingston their ninth win of the season and a 9-3-1 record for 28 points at the top. St. Catharines are at 3-7-0 for 9 points.

Serbian White Eagles opened the scoring early at Windsor Stadium and never looked back following a goal by Ivan Stankovic at the two minute mark. The goal came from a free kick taken just outside the box, a 1-0 lead for the visitors.

Sahjah Reid struck his first of two goals at 34 minutes for Serbian Eagles for a 2-0 lead  and four minutes later Windsor player David Kadoic was shown the red card by referee Scott Decker for serious foul play.

Reid scored his second at 61 minutes to complete the scoring for the Toronto-based team and despite good efforts and a close call from Windsor’s Chad Stuecher the home side failed to find the net and the game ended 3-0 in favour of Serbian White Eagles.

Astros Vasas FC continues to show good form and that paid off with a win over Niagara United  at Kalar Park in Niagara Falls.

The visitors led 1-0 on a goal by forward Erik Gulyas at five minutes – he found the net past Niagara goalkeeper Jonathan Bruggeling after collecting a cross from the right wing, and midfielder Robin Sibalin made it 2-0 at 30 minutes, the score at the interval.

TOP FOUR CLUBS SEPARATED BY A SINGLE POINT ….Astros Vasas FC game moved to Downsview Park

Just a single point separates the top four teams in the CSL First Division and all four will see action this weekend. Two of these teams, York Region Shooters and Toronto Croatia come together at the St. Joan of Arc ground at Maple, just north of Toronto on Sunday, while Brampton City Utd are at home to St. Catharines Wolves the same day.
An interesting clash also, sees Kingston FC at home to Serbian White Eagles at the Queen’s West Field on Saturday where the eastern Ontario side has a growing injury list, including league-leading goalscorer with 15 to his credit Guillaume Surot, and key attacking midfielder Catalin Lichioiu. But the club is optimistic these two players will be fit to play.
In Toronto, Astros Vasas FC will be without the advantage of their home ground Esther Shiner Stadium for the game with Burlington SC on Sunday. The ground is undergoing renovation following storm damage on July 8 and the game is moved to Downsview Park with an early kickoff at 12.45 pm.
The improving Astros Vasas is now experiencing the benefit of new signings this season, including Jose Melo, who captained Mississauga Eagles last year and has played for the Canadian U-20 team and is a former academy player at Toronto FC. The Portuguese-born midfielder is aggressive on attack and has a proven goalscoring record

SERBIAN EAGLES CONVINCING IN HOME OPENER … A decided edge in 3-0 victory over Astros Vasas Friday

Serbian White Eagles opened the season with a convincing 3-0 win over Astros Vasas FC at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, the only game in the Canadian Soccer League Friday night.

Serbian Eagles had a slight edge in play in the early going and took the lead after 21 minutes following a good passing play entering the Astros Vasas penalty box following a free kick. Midfielder Kiril Dimitrov moved the ball to Ivan Stankovic who touched it to Djorjije Strunjas to slot the ball just inside the left post. It was 1-0 at the break.

Ten minutes into the second half Astros Vasas had their first real attempt at scoring when Koroly Csak drove the ball from 16 yards just over the top right corner of the net out of reach of Serbian Eagles’ goalkeeper Stefan Avramovic.

The home side increased their lead at 74 minutes when Stankovic found the top left corner of the net from 15 yards past Astros Vasas goalkeeper Antal-Andras Toth, the goal coming off a right wing cross by Dimitrov.

Serbian White Eagles took a 3-0 lead at the 82nd minute mark on a goal by Dimitrov when he collected a rebound off the crossbar from a shot by Stankovic just inside the box. The score held to the final whistle.

Serbian Eagles’ coach Uros Stamatovic was pleased with his team’s performance for the opening game: “We are developing a number of young players and I’m satisfied with their performance with the win tonight – they did a lot of things right and they know when they play that well they will enjoy the experience,” he said.

Serbian Eagles are looking to improve last season’s sixth place in the 16-team CSL First Division and will be at home on May 24 to St. Catharines Roma Wolves, a 9 pm kickoff at Centennial Stadium.

It was the second defeat for Astros Vasas FC in the new season following a 1-0 loss to York Region Shooters on May 12. “But it will take a few games,” said Laszlo Deak, assistant GM and president of the Toronto Vasas, a branch of the Budapest-based organization, who was instrumental in the merger with North York Astros to form Astros Vasas FC to kickoff the 2013 CSL season.

Astros Vasas FC will play their home opener against Kingston FC at Esther Shiner Stadium on May 26, that’s a 4.30 pm start.

BURLINGTON AN ADDITION WHILE ASTROS STRENGTHEN FOR UPCOMING SEASON IN THE CANADIAN SOCCER LEAGUE

The City of Burlington, strategically located in the centre of the Golden Horseshoe and a region of Canada that abounds with soccer, can now for the first time add a professional team to its many attractions.

Burlington SC is one of 12 teams in the Canadian Soccer League’s First Division for the 2013 season which gets underway with a game between London City and SC Waterloo at the BMO Field in London on Friday, May 3, the beginning of a six-month long campaign through to the league championship at the end of October.

“While we are an expansion team in the CSL and will no doubt find it difficult to achieve too many honours in the first year, we do expect to be competitive right from the kickoff,” said Burlington president Dean Milankovic.  Burlington will play their home games at Nelson Stadium on New Street in Burlington’s south-east district and their home opener is scheduled for Sunday, May 12 against Serbian White Eages.

The CSL has a Hungarian touch for the upcoming campaign with the introduction of  the Toronto Vasas organization, which has merged with North York Astros to form Astros Vasas FC. North York Astros has been one of the high profile clubs since entering the league in 1990, but has struggled to be competitive during the past two seasons while focussed on player development.

That’s all likely to change with the introduction of  the Toronto branch of Vasas,  an offshoot of one of Hungary’s major sports clubs based in Budapest and which boasts a team that dominated Hungarian football in the 60s. Not surprisingly, the Canadian branch has impressive technical and coaching strength, including Laszlo Kiss, a top coach in Europe and a former Tactical Adviser to the Hungarian National Team..

There are signs the new-look former Astros will continue to grow their player development program and be more competitive in the CSL with the addition of the coaching and technical skills that is Toronto Vasas.

“We very much look forward to working with the Astros and to the new season,”

said Laszlo Deak, president of Toronto Vasas.

Toronto Croatia will be defending their CSL championship in the upcoming campaign and again this season the top eight teams will qualify for the quarterfinals, a one-game decider to advance to the semifinals and the championship final.

Nine teams will compete in the developmental CSL Second Division, which kicks off this coming Sunday, May 5 on the Queen’s University campus in Kingston when the Kingston FC reserve team hosts Brampton City Utd B team.

The Second Division playoffs will also be played in October, leading to the Second Division title game at the end of the month.

Brantford Galaxy, Mississauga Eagles FC, SC Toronto have withdrawn from competition in 2013 in the wake of the earlier CSA de-sanctioning, which has now been re-instated. All three have retained membership in the CSL with the intention of returning in 2014, while TFC Academy and Montreal Impact Academy have not returned to CSL competition – Toronto will play their games at the Ontario senior amateur level, while Montreal Impact Academy have arranged exhibition games in the United States.

Ait Slimane scored a second and Montreal’s third goal just after the interval, a drive from 20 yards to beat North York goalkeeper Alberto Domenico Rocha at the 46th minute mark, and the 3-0 score held to the final whistle.

Astros’ defender Omar Jose Ron Cabrera received a second caution and was ejected at 93 minutes, just before the final whistle.

The win moves Montreal Impact Academy into third position in the standings with an 11-3-5 WLT record for 38 points, behind top team Toronto Croatia and SC Toronto in second. North York Astros are at 2-18-1 for seven points. The top four teams in the final table have a home field advantage in the quarterfinals to be played mid-October.
