BURLINGTON DROPS SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES 2-1…result advances Windsor Stars, London City to playoffs.

Burlington SC kept their playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over Serbian White Eagles in the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Friday night, and the result is also important to Windsor Stars and London City as the two southwestern Ontario teams clinch a berth in the playoffs while on the sidelines.

All three goals were scored in the first half in an entertaining encounter at Nelson Stadium, with the first goal scored by Burlington’s  Milos Vucinic who found the at the 13th minute off a corner kick.

Midfielder Kiril Dimitrov equalized for Serbian White Eagles when he found the net past Burlington goalkeeper Vladimir Vujasinovic at 26 minutes and at the 45th minute mark, Vucinic struck again what turned out to be the winner.  The Burlington defender drove the ball past Serbian Eagles goalkeeper Scott Cliff after intercepting a pass in the penalty box for a 2-1 score at half-time and at the final whistle.

Three players were shown the red card by referee Arthur Korbiel. They are James Stamopoulos of Burlington SC and Nikola Negojevic of Serbian White Eagles following an altercation at 83 minutes, and defender Mario Gavran of Burlington after receiving a second caution just before the final whistle.

The Burlington win prevents Serbian White Eagles from picking up enough points to overhaul Windsor Stars and London City – these two teams have 27 points in the table, Serbian Eagles have two games remaining in the regular season and can only finish with a maximum 26 points if both games are won.

Seven teams now occupy playoff berths. They are Kingston FC, York Region Shooters, Toronto Croatia, Brampton City Utd, SC Waterloo, Windsor Stars and London City. Any one of four teams – St. Catharines Wolves, Astros Vasas FC, Burlington SC and Serbian White Eagles, can win the last playoff spot available.

BURLINGTON SQUEAK THROUGH 4-3 FRIDAY

With its last game of the regular season coming up on September 20, London City will have to wait for the outcome of other late season games to determine if the side from southwestern Ontario has a berth in the championship playoffs following a 4-3 home defeat in the hands of Burlington SC Friday.
It was a ding-dong struggle at the Hellenic Centre in London with the outcome in doubt until the final whistle and the defeat left the home side needing more points than is available in their regular season finale to be sure of a playoff spot.
The prolific Marin Vucemilovic Grgic had London off to a flying start with two goals, the first at 16 minutes and another seven minutes later for a 2-0 lead, but that was cut to 2-1 when Burlington defender Nikola Stanojevic scored from the penalty spot at 45 minutes, the penalty awarded by referee Justin Tasev following a foul in the box. It was 2-1 at half-time.
The goals by Vucemilovic-Grgic were his 15th and 16th of the season and he leaps into second position in the goalscoring chart.
Stanojevic scored a second goal from the spot, awarded for a hand ball infringement for a 2-2 tie at 71 minutes.
Burlington went ahead 3-2 at the 73rd minute mark, a goal by Nenad Nikolic who found the net past London goalkeeper Corey Laureano, but it took less than two minutes for London to tie the score 3-3 when forward Robert Mutambala put the ball past Burlington goalkeeper Vladimir Vujasinovic.
Midfielder Nicholas Lindsay struck the winner for Burlington at 75 minutes, his 9th of the season.
The win gives Burlington SC an improved 6-11-0 WLT for 18 points and now tied for 8th position in the table, while London City have a 7-11-3 for 24 points in seventh position.

The second half was a more even contest with Antonio Stranges prominent for the Garden City side and coming close to scoring, but any chance of a serious recovery were lost at 86 minutes when the home side were reduced to 10 men.

Referee Allison Enright showed the red card to Angelo Beatrice of St. Catharines following a second caution. The game ended, 2-0.

BURLINGTON AN ADDITION WHILE ASTROS STRENGTHEN FOR UPCOMING SEASON IN THE CANADIAN SOCCER LEAGUE

The City of Burlington, strategically located in the centre of the Golden Horseshoe and a region of Canada that abounds with soccer, can now for the first time add a professional team to its many attractions.

Burlington SC is one of 12 teams in the Canadian Soccer League’s First Division for the 2013 season which gets underway with a game between London City and SC Waterloo at the BMO Field in London on Friday, May 3, the beginning of a six-month long campaign through to the league championship at the end of October.

“While we are an expansion team in the CSL and will no doubt find it difficult to achieve too many honours in the first year, we do expect to be competitive right from the kickoff,” said Burlington president Dean Milankovic.  Burlington will play their home games at Nelson Stadium on New Street in Burlington’s south-east district and their home opener is scheduled for Sunday, May 12 against Serbian White Eages.

The CSL has a Hungarian touch for the upcoming campaign with the introduction of  the Toronto Vasas organization, which has merged with North York Astros to form Astros Vasas FC. North York Astros has been one of the high profile clubs since entering the league in 1990, but has struggled to be competitive during the past two seasons while focussed on player development.

That’s all likely to change with the introduction of  the Toronto branch of Vasas,  an offshoot of one of Hungary’s major sports clubs based in Budapest and which boasts a team that dominated Hungarian football in the 60s. Not surprisingly, the Canadian branch has impressive technical and coaching strength, including Laszlo Kiss, a top coach in Europe and a former Tactical Adviser to the Hungarian National Team..

There are signs the new-look former Astros will continue to grow their player development program and be more competitive in the CSL with the addition of the coaching and technical skills that is Toronto Vasas.

“We very much look forward to working with the Astros and to the new season,”

said Laszlo Deak, president of Toronto Vasas.

Toronto Croatia will be defending their CSL championship in the upcoming campaign and again this season the top eight teams will qualify for the quarterfinals, a one-game decider to advance to the semifinals and the championship final.

Nine teams will compete in the developmental CSL Second Division, which kicks off this coming Sunday, May 5 on the Queen’s University campus in Kingston when the Kingston FC reserve team hosts Brampton City Utd B team.

The Second Division playoffs will also be played in October, leading to the Second Division title game at the end of the month.

Brantford Galaxy, Mississauga Eagles FC, SC Toronto have withdrawn from competition in 2013 in the wake of the earlier CSA de-sanctioning, which has now been re-instated. All three have retained membership in the CSL with the intention of returning in 2014, while TFC Academy and Montreal Impact Academy have not returned to CSL competition – Toronto will play their games at the Ontario senior amateur level, while Montreal Impact Academy have arranged exhibition games in the United States.
