TFC ACADEMY SCORE THREE IN FOUR MINUTES FOR 5-0 VICTORY…Campanella, Camargo each strike two.

It was a competitive first half at Club Roma in St. Catharines, but that all changed shortly after the break when TFC Academy took over to score three goals in four minutes to defeat St. Catharines Wolves 5-0, the only game in the CSL Wednesday night.

TFC’s Christian Campanella opened the scoring following a period when TFC Academy pressed the home defence to score at the 20th minute mark, the midfielder intercepted a pass to beat St. Catharines goalkeeper Claudio Perri with a drive from 28 yards.

Midfielder Sergio Camargo increased the lead for the visitors at 43 minutes, his ninth of the season and it was 2-0 at the interval.

Nicholas Lindsay made it 3-0 at 51 minutes, a strong drive from just outside the box to find the top left corner.

Campanella struck his second goal and the academy side’s fourth two minutes later and Camargo made it 5-0 almost immediately following the re-start for the midfielder’s 10th goal of the current campaign.

The win gave TFC Academy an improved 10-3-3 WLT  record for 33 points while St. Catharines Wolves now have a 1-12-5 record for 8 points.

LATE AMORES EQUALIZER MEANS 3-3 TIE AT CLUB ROMA

Jordi Amores of St. Catharines came off the bench to score the tying goal in a ding-dong 3-3 struggle with Brampton City Utd in the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Wednesday night.

The 19 year-old midfielder, brought up from the reserves – his birthday was on Monday – struck at the 82nd minute mark to salvage the point. He found the net from 15 yards past Brampton goalkeeper Jason Lopes in a night game played at Club Roma in St. Catharines.

Following a long period during which neither side could find the net, Brampton eventually scored at 44 minutes on a goal by midfielder David Guzman for a 1-0 lead at the interval, and just five minutes after the re-start Guzman made it 2-0 with a drive from outside the box.

St. Catharines came back to reduce the lead at 57 minutes, a goal by Abu Kamara for a 2-1 Brampton lead and Kamara scored a second for the home side to make it 2-2 at the 64th minute mark, a shot that entered the net off the goalpost.

Brampton regained the lead at 73 minutes when Ardit Xhameni scored for the visitors, a shot from close in and off the woodwork that beat St. Catharines’ goalkeeper Claudio Perri, a 3-2 lead before Amores struck the equalizer nine minutes later, a 3-3 score that held to the final whistle.

The tie gives St. Catharines Wolves a 1-11-4 WLT record for 7 points at the foot of the CSL First Division standings, while Brampton are still at the half-way mark with a 6-5-4 record for 22 points.

SHOOTERS, NIAGARA UNITED SCORE VICTORIES… Penalties play a part in Sunday games

Penalty box infringements cost Brampton City Utd dearly after taking an early lead in the game against Niagara United at Victoria Park Sunday afternoon, while in one evening encounter York Region Shooters recovered from an early second half set-back to eventually control the game and defeat North York Astros.

Brampton’s Mark Jankovic opened the scoring after just eight minutes in the game with Niagara United, the veteran defender heading past Niagara goalkeeper Jonathan Bruggeling from a free kick taken outside the 18 yard line.

It took just two minutes for Niagara United to equalize from the penalty spot after referee Gianni Fucchini ordered the kick following a hand ball inside the box.  Mohammed Mohammed beat Brampton goalkeeper Euloge Awitor Kodzo to make it 1-1 at the 10th minute mark and that was the score at the break.

As the second half progressed the game appeared headed for a tie until referee Facchini ordered a second penalty to the visitors following a rough challenge by Brampton goalkeeper Awitor Kodzo on an incoming Niagara forward, and Anthony Mermigas scored from the spot at the 88th minute mark. The game ended 2-1 in favour of Niagara United for their fifth victory of the season.

Following a scoreless first half at the St. Joan of Arc ground in Maple, York Region Shooters had to come from a 1-0 deficit in the second half following an opening goal by North York defender Kurt Ramsey. He scored from the penalty spot at the 53rd minute mark after referee Matt Meloche pointed to the spot when Astros’ Michael Tischer was brought down inside the penalty area.

York Region equalized five minutes later, a goal by midfielder Andre Manders and Sargon Mate made it 2-1 for the home side, a low shot that found the net at the 84th minute mark.

York Region Shooters were also awarded a penalty when Kadian Leckie was brought down in the box and the York Region forward took the kick to beat Astros’ goalkeeper Enea Perego for a 3-1 score at 88 minutes and the score held to the final whistle.

ONLY ONE GOAL SEPARATES TOP TEAMS TORONTO CROATIA AND SC TORONTO….The Weekend Games

With only one goal separating Toronto Croatia and SC Toronto at the top of the First Division – each has 31 points –  and with little to separate the remaining teams in the top half of the standings, the race for the CSL Championship continues to be close as we enter the final one-third of the campaign.

Most teams are now looking in earnest to secure a berth in the playoffs – the top eight at the end of the regular season will qualify and games through to the final will consist of a quarter-final game and a semi-final leading to the CSL Championship on October 27.

A close race is also developing to establish the top goalscorer in the CSL First Division, with Milos Scepanovic of Brampton City Utd on top with 12 goals, Jarek Whiteman of SC Toronto has 11, the consistently prolific Tihomir Maletic of Toronto Croatia is never far off – he has 10 and so has Drazen Vukovic of  SC Waterloo.
