KINGSTON PRESS CONFERENCE LAUNCHES 2014

kingston-fc-web-0032Kingston FC were quick off the mark to jump into a lead last season and judging by the early press conference on January 28 while surrounded by the worst winter weather seen in the region for many years, the First Division title winner looks well positioned again to bid for even more honours in the Canadian Soccer League.

Kingston attracted plenty of attention in 2013 with a well-earned large fan support and the team responded again to be the finalist in the CSL Championship, losing 3-1 to SC Waterloo, another recent team in Canada’s top professional league.

“This time around, we’d like to repeat the top division win and add the championship trophy as well,” said Lorne Abugov, the club chairman, at the gathering  at Queen’s University, the world-renowned teaching institution which has reinforced a successful partnership struck with their local pro soccer club in 2013.  Abugov does not rule out the possibility of a strengthened reserve team winning the CSL Second Division.

On January 24 Kingston FC coaches and management took a close look at 30 players invited to bid for place on one of the teams and the club expects to sign six or seven during February. Kingston aims to retain the core of last year’s player pool for the coming season, including French striker Guillaume Surot, the CSL top scorer. While the roster is expected to be finalized by mid-March, there will be one more opportunity for some local players to tryout for any spots still available, and this will lead to the club’s training camp opening on April 24.

The club sports a new-look logo and new minority shareholders were announced as Shawn Geary (McCoy Bus Service & Tours), Catherine MacLeod (Physiotherapy Kingston), and Belleville businessman Jim Allore.
Abugov explained the present position of the CSL which is operating as a private league similar to MLB, the NBA and the NHL while in membership with the new Soccer Federation of Canada.

But what  struck a chord most with the media was an announcement that Queen’s Varsity Men’s captain Joe Zupo will be on trial with Exeter City FC in England’s League Two and that Mike Smith and Hugo Delmaire were attending the USL Pro Combine in Florida in January, and that Edgar Soglo, Guillaume Surot, and Jason Massie trialed with Ottawa Fury FC, the newest Canadian member in the U.S.-based North American Soccer League with 11 teams, two of which, Ottawa and Edmonton are Canadian.

The Kingston FC season opener will be during the May 24 weekend and the home opener May 31.

KINGSTON VICTORY FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP ENCOUNTER WITH SC WATERLOO……Semifinal win over London City

Kingston-FCKingston FC will meet SC Waterloo, another recent team in the Canadian Soccer League, in the CSL Championship Final at Kalar Park Stadium at Niagara Falls on November 3.

Kingston defeated London City by a 4-2 score in the second semifinal at the Queen’s West Field, Kingston, the only game in the CSL Sunday.

The Kingston win eliminated a team which entered the league back in 1973, to follow Saturday’s first semifinal defeat by SC Waterloo of Toronto Croatia, which entered professional soccer in 1956.

The two finalists entered the CSL First Division in 2011 and while Kingston FC was recognized as a likely contender for league honours from the beginning of the 2013 campaign, Waterloo made strong progress throughout and ended the regular season impressively to have its First Division side bid for the league championship, while its reserve team booked its place in the Second Division final.

London City went ahead 1-0 after 12 minutes in Sunday’s semifinal at Queen’s West field, a goal by Marin Vucemilovic Grigic from the penalty spot when Kingston goalkeeper Jaroslav Tesar brought down London’s Aldin Kukic on a breakaway.

. Catalin Lichioiu equalized for Kingston from a free kick at 23 minutes and top scorer Guillaume Surot struck from 18 yards for a 2-1 Kingston lead at the break.

Younan Samra equalized for London for a 2-2 tie at 54 minutes and at the 80th minute mark Surot put the home side in front 3-2 from the penalty spot after midfielder Edgar Soglo was fouled in the box.

It was Soglo who scored the fourth goal for Kingston, a drive into the top right corner well out of reach of London goalkeeper Vladimir Markotic for a 4-2 score at 90 minutes and the score at the final whistle.

Kingston FC will meet SC Waterloo in the final at Kalar Park Stadium, Niagara Falls on Sunday, November 3, a 2.30 pm kickoff, to be preceded by the Second Division championship decider between Toronto Croatia B and SC Waterloo B at 12 noon.

KINGSTON ADVANCE……narrow victory puts division winner in semifinals

Kingston FC may be finding each game a greater challenge as the season moves through the CSL playoffs, but it’s a sure bet head coach Colm Muldoom has factored that into his way of negotiating the difficult path that leads to the overall CSL Championship.
For the group that boasts the first professional soccer team to play out of the picturesque eastern Ontario community, it has not been an easy journey and Sunday’s 2-1 victory over a Serbian White Eagles, winner of the trophy in 2008 with experienced players seasoned in European soccer, it was no exception.
It was a squeaker, a scoreless first half with a Kingston goal by midfielder Nathan Klemencic six minutes into the second half cancelled out by a Serbian Eagles goal by midfielder Stefan Racic just two minutes from the final whistle.
The game went into 30 minutes of extra time and while the home side had a decided edge in the second half, there was no guarantee that would continue.
Muldoon understood some time ago it would probably take other players to sustain the earlier success attributable to striker Guillaume Surot, Jason Massie and Catalin Lichioiu, a trio to account for 47 goals during the regular season.
Holding a 1-1 precarious tie, the Irishman brought in Kihara Waiganjo to replace Klemencic – the opening goalscorer – and after 10 minutes of overtime the talented 25 year-old headed in the game winner just three minutes after stepping on the field. The 2-1 lead held until the final whistle.
“Basically, our team delivered a performance, created many chances which we should’ve finished to make the game easier,” Muldoon said. “Our conditioning took over, [we] created more chances but it just wouldn’t go in for us – we hit the wood work numerous times. We made our own fortune and we got what we deserved in the end.”Kingston FC has announced its CSL Championship semifinal game against London City will be played on Sunday, October 20 at the Queen’s West Field, a 6.30 pm kickoff.

KINGSTON FC WINS CSL FIRST DIVISION…..York Region, Toronto Croatia go down to defeat Wednesday

The two teams battling for the top positions in the CSL First Division went down to defeat in the only two games played in the CSL Wednesday. A resounding 5-0 victory by SC Waterloo over second place York Region Shooters and a 1-0 triumph for Serbian White Eagles over third place defending CSL champions Toronto Croatia, confirmed Kingston FC as winners of the First Division title

Kingston wins the CSL First Division with one game remaining in the regular season. The new-look eastern Ontario side has captured the CSL’s top division in just its second year following a 14th position of 16 teams in the league standings in its inaugural 2012 year. But under new management and a new head coach the club has been relentless in its pursuit of honours from kickoff in May throughout the 2013 campaign.

A goal at the 18th minute mark by Sahjah Reid of Serbian White Eagles was enough to secure the three points against Toronto Croatia at Esther Shiner Stadium when he took a pass outside the box to move in and beat Toronto Croatia goalkeeper Antonio Ilic with a low drive inside the left post.

It was 1-0 at half-time and at the final whistle for Serbian White Eagles with Toronto Croatia ending the game with 10 men after Ilic was shown the red card for serious play at 76 minutes.

Serbian White Eagles now have an improved 7-12-2 for 23 points in eighth position in the standings and with one game remaining are in a position with Astros Vasas FC to keep up a bid for the eighth and final playoff spot.

Toronto Croatia are in third position with a 13-3-5 record for 44 points, with one game remaining, tied on points with York Region Shooters following their defeat at Waterloo.

SC Waterloo were impressive with their 5-0 victory at Warrior Field, which follows a 9-0 defeat of St. Catharines Wolves Sunday. Defender Dado Hadrovic opened the scoring at 35 minutes and David Muir made it 2-0 three minutes later, the score at half-time.

Vladimir Zelenbaba increased the Waterloo lead to 3-0 at 47 minutes, Harris Fazlagic made it 4-0 at 65 minutes and Adis Hasecic rounded the scoring at 5-0 at the 82nd minute mark.

Waterloo complete their regular season with a strong showing 11-7-4 record for 37 points to secure fifth position in the standings, while York Region Shooters are at 14-5-2 for 44 points with one game remaining.

KINGSTON ON EDGE OF FIRST DIVISION TITLE WITH SUNDAY VICTORY………York Region tie with Toronto Croatia and Waterloo blitz St. Catharines 9-0

With one game remaining in the regular season, Kingston now has a 16-3-2 record for 50 points and six points clear of York Region Shooters and Toronto Croatia, both of which have two games to play. Only a major change in the goal differential can prevent Kingston from winning the First Division title.

Burlington SC ended the season with a 7-15-0 record for 21 points and are eliminated from the playoffs as a result of the defeat.

Midfielder Gerard Ladiyou opened the scoring for York Region Shooters at the 6th minute mark at the Hershey Field in Mississauga, but Kresimir Prgomet tied the score 1-1 for Toronto Croatia at 17 minutes.

Tihomir Maletic scored on a breakaway solo effort to put Toronto Croatia 2-1 up and at 87 minutes Richard West tied the score 2-2 for York Region, the score at the final whistle.

Kingston FC squeaked past York Region Shooters 2-1 but went four points clear at the top of the First Division, Toronto Croatia defeated Burlington 4-1, while Brampton City Utd were held to a 2-2 tie by Astros Vasas FC, three games in the CSL Sunday.

At the Invista Centre at Kingston, Catalin Lichioiu struck the opening goal for Kingston, heading in off a cross from Edgar Soglo and York Region’s Richard West tied the game 1-1 at 44 minutes.

CSL leading goalscorer Guillaume Surot scored the winner from the penalty spot at 86 minutes – his 26th of the campaign – called when Kingston captain Austin White was brought down in the penalty box from a corner kick and the game ended 2-1 in favour of Kingston.

Kingston now have a 15-3-2 WLT record for 47 points, four points clear of York Region Shooters and Toronto Croatia. The eastern Ontario club has two games remaining in the regular season, York Region Shooters and Toronto Croatia each have 3 games remaining.

KINGSTON HELD TO 1-1 TIE BY SERBIAN EAGLES…..weather takes out London City vs Brampton

Kingston FC were held to a 1-1 tie by Serbian White Eagles in a well-played game in doubt until the final whistle at Esther Shiner Stadium, North York, the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Friday night. Another game scheduled, London City vs Brampton City Utd., was called off at the Hellenic Centre, London, due to thunderstorms and lightning.

Kingston were heavily favoured to land an additional three points in their bid for the CSL First Division title, but it was Serbian Eagles to strike first with a goal at 28 minutes by midfielder Djorjije Strunjas. He drove the ball low from inside the penalty box to catch the left side of the net out of reach of Kingston goalkeeper Jaroslav Tesar.

It was 1-0 at half-time.

Just three minutes into the second half striker Guillaume Surot equalized with a low shot from 25 yards to beat Serbian Eagles goalkeeper Scott Cliff. It was Surot’s 25th goal of the season and improved his already good chances of winning the First Division goalscoring title in the regular season which is due to end early October.

There were few opportunities for either side to catch a winner, although at 85 minutes Ramon Bailey came close in an attempt that was saved by Taser.

The game ended 1-1, giving Kingston a 14-3-2 WLT record for 44 points which is one-up over York Region Shooters at 83 points. Serbian White Eagles have a 7-10-1 record for 22 points in eighth place.

At Club Roma in St. Catharines the home side won their seventh game of the season in rain-swept conditions with an early second half goal by Mohammed Mohammed, his seventh goal of the season. Mohammed beat Windsor goalkeeper Dejo Olagbegi from close range off a cross from the right wing.

The win means the Garden City side still has an opportunity to clinch a playoff spot with its 21 points and three games remaining.

In the CSL Second Division, it was St. Catharines Wolves B 2, SC Waterloo B 1, while York Region Shooters B and Niagara United B played to a 1-1 tie. London City B, Niagara United B, Toronto Croatia B and St. Catharines Wolves B have all clinched playoff berths – there are four spots remaining.

KINGSTON RETURNS FOR PUSH TO FIRST DIVISION TITLE…..playoff details released

High flying Kingston FC will be looking to maintain their three-point margin at the top of the CSL First Division when they meet SC Waterloo this coming Sunday following a successful excursion last Sunday to the University of Ottawa for a friendly encounter with the Montreal Impact Academy. The CSL league leaders came away with a 1-0 victory in that game and now return to the business of the First Division title with five games remaining in their regular season schedule prior to the CSL Championship playoffs in October.
The Brampton City Utd vs. Toronto Croatia match at Victoria Park in Brampton this Saturday gives the home side an opportunity to make amends for two home defeats in a week. The loss to York Region Shooters last Sunday was a particularly hard blow to Brampton’s bid for the top spot following a strong period during which the team from northwest of Toronto played some strong, attractive soccer.
The CSL playoffs in both divisions will get underway with the quarterfinals the weekend October 11 – 13, with the top eight teams qualifying for the post-regular season competition. The top four teams will have home advantage and will retain home advantage for the semifinals the weekend of October 18 – 20. The CSL Championship Final and Second Division championship date and venue will be announced on Monday.
