VORKUTA NEEDS GOALS TO ACHIEVE REGULAR SEASON DOUBLE FOLLOWING SECOND DIVISION TITLE WIN

VORKUTA NEEDS GOALS TO ACHIEVE REGULAR SEASON DOUBLE FOLLOWING SECOND DIVISION TITLE WIN

FC Vorkuta B, the club’s reserve squad, has won the CSL Second Division with two games remaining in the regular season.

It’s the second league title victory following the First Division triumph in Vorkuta’s inaugural 2017 campaign.

The club is presently in a see-saw battle with FC Ukraine United for the top spot in the First Division. Vorkuta has two games remaining – against Hamilton City and Brantford Galaxy, while Ukraine United, with a three-points lead over Vorkuta, has  just one remaining game (against CSC Mississauga) to complete its regular season schedule.

Ukraine United or Vorkuta will win the First Division. Each team may end the season with 38 points, in which case tie-breakers will be employed to decide the First Division title.

The teams are tied when the first tie-breaker –  the head-to-head results between the two teams –  is applied. The next tie-breaker, goal difference in regular season games, gives Ukraine United an edge with a goal differential of 36 compared to 30 for Vorkuta.

Vorkuta needs goals to achieve a regular season double and will travel to the Heritage Field for the match with Hamilton City on Sunday, that’s a 6.30 pm kickoff. Vorkuta’s last regular season match against Brantford Galaxy is on Thursday, September 20, a 9 pm kickoff at Esther Shiner Stadium. Ukraine United’s final regular season game against CSC Mississauga is on Sunday, September 23 at Centennial Stadium, a 7 pm start.

There is one First Division match this Saturday when SC Waterloo hosts Scarborough SC at RIM Park, a 6.30 pm kickoff and in addition to the Hamilton City vs FC Vorkuta game on Sunday, there is Brantford Galaxy at home to Real Mississauga, an 8.30 pm start at the Heritage Field.

There is one Second Division game this weekend when Milton SC B meets Brantford Galaxy B, a 7.30 pm start at Lions Park on Friday.

CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLE FOR WATERLOO…….. First time a club has won both titles

Waterloo-SCSC Waterloo won the Canadian Soccer League championship with a 3-1 victory over Kingston FC at the Kalar Sports Park at Niagara Falls, Ontario Sunday afternoon to follow an earlier victory for the club’s reserve team which captured the CSL Second Division championship. It’s the first time a CSL club has won both titles

The two First Division sides produced a fast-paced entertaining encounter which ended the six-month long CSL season and while Kingston were favoured to win following their impressive First Division winning campaign, the team from southwestern Ontario controlled the midfield for much of the game to eventually come through with the victory.

Defender Vladimir Zelenbaba opened the scoring for Waterloo at 30 minutes when he volleyed a knee high hard cross from the left wing to find the net past Kingston goalkeeper Jaroslav Tesar for a 1-0 score at the break.

Kingston midfielder Nathan Klemencic tied the game 1-1 at 60 minutes with a low shot from 18 yards, but Zelanbaba scored his second goal to put Waterloo in the lead 2-1 at the 74th minute mark.

Waterloo went further ahead by a 3-1 score at 81 minutes when a deflection off a Kingston defender struck the cross bar and went straight to Harris Fazlagic who headed into the net and the score held to the final whistle.

It completed the double for Waterloo with an earlier in the day Second Division championship win by the Waterloo reserve team which defeated Toronto Croatia Reserves, 2-0. Waterloo goals were scored by forward Erwin Uzunovic, who found the net from 20 yards from a pass by Mohamed Aborig, and Mohammed-Ali Heydarpour made it 2-0 at 88 minutes – the Waterloo forward found the net after collecting a pass from midfielder Edward Syllie.

Waterloo head coach Lazo Dzepina attributed his side’s championship win to a determination to be successful by strengthening the First Division team and a resolve to be ready for a game with high-scoring Kingston.

“We added two important players and following a regular season loss to Kingston we worked on a number of things to give us a good chance if we were to meet this team in the playoffs and It all came together, ” said Dzepina following the final whistle.

Waterloo finished the regular season fifth in the First Division standings and defeated Brampton City Utd and Toronto Croatia in the playoffs, while Kingston ended the regular season on top as the league winner to follow-up with wins over Serbian White Eagles and London City on their way to the final.

KINGSTON VICTORY FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP ENCOUNTER WITH SC WATERLOO……Semifinal win over London City

Kingston-FCKingston FC will meet SC Waterloo, another recent team in the Canadian Soccer League, in the CSL Championship Final at Kalar Park Stadium at Niagara Falls on November 3.

Kingston defeated London City by a 4-2 score in the second semifinal at the Queen’s West Field, Kingston, the only game in the CSL Sunday.

The Kingston win eliminated a team which entered the league back in 1973, to follow Saturday’s first semifinal defeat by SC Waterloo of Toronto Croatia, which entered professional soccer in 1956.

The two finalists entered the CSL First Division in 2011 and while Kingston FC was recognized as a likely contender for league honours from the beginning of the 2013 campaign, Waterloo made strong progress throughout and ended the regular season impressively to have its First Division side bid for the league championship, while its reserve team booked its place in the Second Division final.

London City went ahead 1-0 after 12 minutes in Sunday’s semifinal at Queen’s West field, a goal by Marin Vucemilovic Grigic from the penalty spot when Kingston goalkeeper Jaroslav Tesar brought down London’s Aldin Kukic on a breakaway.

. Catalin Lichioiu equalized for Kingston from a free kick at 23 minutes and top scorer Guillaume Surot struck from 18 yards for a 2-1 Kingston lead at the break.

Younan Samra equalized for London for a 2-2 tie at 54 minutes and at the 80th minute mark Surot put the home side in front 3-2 from the penalty spot after midfielder Edgar Soglo was fouled in the box.

It was Soglo who scored the fourth goal for Kingston, a drive into the top right corner well out of reach of London goalkeeper Vladimir Markotic for a 4-2 score at 90 minutes and the score at the final whistle.

Kingston FC will meet SC Waterloo in the final at Kalar Park Stadium, Niagara Falls on Sunday, November 3, a 2.30 pm kickoff, to be preceded by the Second Division championship decider between Toronto Croatia B and SC Waterloo B at 12 noon.

SC Waterloo advanced to the CSL Championship Final with a penalty kicks victory over Toronto Croatia following an extra time 1-1 tie at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke Saturday night. Toronto Croatia won the championship in 2012.

It was a well-played encounter throughout the 90 minutes plus 30 minutes of extra time before Drazen Vukovic chipped the winning penalty down the middle and just under the bar to give Waterloo a 5-4 edge in kicks from the spot.

Toronto Croatia missed the first penalty, with all remaining spot kicks finding the net and the last one, taken by Vukovic, winning the game.
SC Waterloo, a side which gained in strength as the regular season games progressed and attracted attention particularly when scoring 18 goals without conceding one in the three games prior to Saturday’s victory, will meet the winner of the Kingston FC vs. London City semifinal being played Sunday.

In Saturday’s Second Division Championship semifinals, Toronto Croatia B defeated York Region Shooters B 2-0 at the Hershey Field in Mississauga on first half goals by forward Josip Stanic and midfielder Peter Vidovic, while at the Terry Fox Stadium in Brampton, SC Waterloo B scored four second half goals to defeat Brampton City Utd 5-1. ASTROS VASAS UPSETS BRAMPTON 2-1 SUNDAY ….lightning forces cancellation Waterloo vs York Region

Astros Vasas FC upset Brampton City Utd with a well-deserved 2-1 away victory, while a second game scheduled in the CSL First Division Sunday, SC Waterloo vs York Region Shooters, was called off shortly before kickoff time due to lightning.

Brampton City Utd pressed early to keep up their strong bid for the CSL First Division title, but it was Astros Vasas that struck first with a goal by recently acquired midfielder Erik Luptak at 37 minutes when he picked up the ball outside the 6-yard line to drive into the net to the right of Brampton goalkeeper Camilo Benzi. The goal held up for a 1-0 score at the interval.

Brampton midfielder Thomas McLean equalized at the 64th minute mark with a drive from just outside of the penalty box that left Astros Vasas goalkeeper Matt George with little chance when it hit the top right corner of the net.

Brampton lost defender Mirko Medic at 83 minutes, he was sent off  after receiving a second caution from referee Steve Depiero and two minutes later Jose Melo struck the winner for visitors when he beat Benzi from five yards for a 2-1 Astros Vasas victory.

Brampton’s Thomas McLean was also shown the red card just before the final whistle.

It was the fifth victory for Astros Vasas and the win improved their chance of a playoff spot as they moved into eighth  position in the standings with a 5-10-2 WLT for 17 points, while the defeat was a set-back for Brampton despite their impressive 12-4-0 record in second place in the standings, and the defeat is the first since July 28.

One other First Division game scheduled for Sunday, the SC Waterloo vs York Region Shooters clash, was called off by referee Scott Decker due to persistent lightning in the area – the game will be rescheduled – and there was one Second Division match Sunday when St. Catharines Wolves B defeated Toronto Croatia B by a score of 4-1.

SHOOTERS, BRAMPTON, WATERLOO SCORE SUNDAY VICTORIES…Toronto Croatia falters

York Region Shooters handed Toronto Croatia their second loss in less than a week with a 2-0 defeat at the St. Joan of Arc ground in Maple and the three points earned put Shooters in a position tied for top spot as the CSL campaign enters the second half of the season.
Midfielder Ali Hamam scored the opening goal at 18 minutes, heading in past Toronto Croatia goalkeeper Antonio Ilic off a corner kick and in a game in which the current CSL champions had enough chances to draw level, Shooters’ goalkeeper Adrian Ibanez kept the visitors off the scoresheet and it was 1-0 at the break.
Richard West increased the Shooters’ lead to 2-0 when he took a pass from Kadian Lecky to place the ball into the net to the left of Ilic. It was 2-0 for York Region at the end.

Forward Marcos Nunes opened the scoring for Brampton City Utd against St. Catharines Wolves at Victoria Park in Brampton, finding the net from close in past the St. Catharines’ goalkeeper Matthew Greco at the 19th minute mark and it was 1-0 at the interval. It was Nunes’ 12th goal of the season.
Milos Scepanovic struck twice for the home side in the second half, his first came at 77 minutes for a 2-0 Brampton lead and the former European standout scored again at 87 minutes for a 3-0 score at the final whistle. The goals were numbers 5 and 6 of the season for Scepanovic.
Brampton City Utd keep pace with a very good eight wins in their 8-2-0 record for 24 points trailing the top two by just a single point.
Forward Nicholas Lindsay struck the opening goal for Burlington at 31 minutes following a miscue in the Astros Vasas FC defence in the game at Downsview Park. A pass back to Astros’ goalkeeper Laszlo Barna was intercepted by Lindsay who promptly drove the ball into the back of the net and it was 1-0 for the visitors at half-time.
Burlington were awarded a penalty kick which resulted in a goal at the 71st minute when Astros Vasas defender Kurt Ramsey fouled in the box for referee Lyes Arfa to point to the spot.  Burlington player-coach William Etchu Tabi scored for a 2-0 lead, the game result.
Waterloo SC are edging closer to the top and Sunday’s victory at Warrior Field in Waterloo puts the southwestern Ontario side in a position to make a bid for the top spot during the second half of the season. Windsor Stars played with 10-men for a part of the game after Chris Suta was shown the red card by referee Ljubisa Vrljes.
Midfielder Shawn Brown opened the scoring for Waterloo at 59 minutes following a closely contested scoreless first half.
