TORONTO CROATIA, YORK REGION SHOOTERS REGISTER OPENING WINS…..SC Waterloo and Niagara United tie 1-1

CSL champions Toronto Croatia continued their winning way with a narrow 3-2 defeat of Kingston FC, while York Region Shooters also opened their new season account with a 1-0 victory over Astros Vasas FC, and SC Waterloo played to a 1-1 tie with Niagara United, three games in the CSL First Division Sunday night. One other game scheduled, Burlington SC vs. Serbian White Eagles, was postponed due to ground conditions at Nelson Stadium in Burlington.

Kingston FC opened the scoring with a goal from Catalin Lichioiu at the 23rd minute mark at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke and Roberto Galle tied the score 1-1 for Toronto Croatia five minutes later.

Striker Tihomir Maletic put the home side in the lead at 31 minutes when he intercepted just outside the penalty box to move in and drive a low shot from 18 yards just inside the post and Maletic increased the Croatia lead to 3-1 at 41 minutes, beating Kingston goalkeeper Jaroslav Tesar from 10 yards. It was 3-1 at the break.

Nathan Klemencic struck for the visitors to reduce the Croatia lead to 3-2 at 59 minutes and Kingston’s Jason Massie came close to equalizing when he caught the goalpost with a last minute attempt on goal in added time with Croatia goalkeeper Anton Ilic well beaten. TORONTO CROATIA WINS CSL CHAMPIONSHIP….. SC Toronto Second Division Champions

Toronto Croatia won the CSL championship with a 1-0 victory over Capital City FC of Ottawa Saturday.

Midfielder Hayden Fitzwilliams scored the only goal of the match at 18 minutes, a header from 15 yards off a free kick with pace from the right wing by Tihomir Maletic that left Clint Irwin in the Capital City goal with no chance on the save.

It was a close, even game throughout that could have gone either way. Capital City, in its inaugural season in the Canadian Soccer League, had its best opportunity to equalize with an attempt by forward Sullivan Silva at 23 minutes, a drive that went over the crossbar with Toronto Croatia goalkeeper Sandi Matika beaten. Capital City defender Andre Manders also came close at 77 minutes.

It was Toronto Croatia’s eighth league title since entering professional soccer in 1956 with earlier wins in 1970, 71, 72, 73, 2000, 2004 and 2007. It was also the second trophy win this season following a Croatian World Club Championship victory on July 2 when the Toronto side defeated teams from Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Australia in the two-week competition played in Europe.

Toronto Croatia finished second of 14 teams in the CSL First Division regular season just ended and had the best defensive record and just three defeats in the 26-game schedule. Capital City FC were not far behind in third position, conceding just one more goal and had just four losses.

Velemir Crljen, in his fourth year as head coach of Toronto Croatia said his team played well to win a very good game. “My team did a good job against a quick, younger side and the score was about right and we deserved to win,” he said.

Crljen said he was pleased with the season, close to winning the First Division, winning in Europe and now winning the championship. “I’m very happy,” he said.

Shaun Harris, head coach of Capital City, while congratulating Toronto Croatia for the win said he thought his side was on top in the second half. “Two teams with the best defensive record in the league made it a game hard to get a hit on goal, but I thought we had the better of the last 45 minutes. They are a very experienced team, but we did well, just didn’t quite make it,” he said.

The CSL season started early May with 14 teams in each of two divisions and will announce its individual award winners November 13. Mississauga Eagles FC B, the club’s reserve team in the CSL, won the Second Division championship by defeating Brampton City Utd B on October 22.

There could not be a greater contrast to compare Montreal Impact Academy

and Toronto Croatia, the two finalists in this year’s CSL Championship.

Most players in the Montreal Academy team are under 21, in a team that’s been in the CSL for just three years and part of a fledgling Montreal Impact organization in their first year in Major League Soccer (MLS). Several of the academy players have been selected for one of Canada’s national youth teams and their abundant talent reflects what the future looks like for Canadian soccer on the world stage.

In Saturday’s line-up for the Quebec side are midfielder Kevin Luarca, 19, and Kai Morton, 18, who were included in the Canada U-20 camp for the four-nation Marbella Cup in Spain recently, while Anthony Jackson-Hamel, 19, forward, Hugo LaPointe-Senecal, 19, have also been called by Canada. Midfielder Wandrille Lefevre and forward Mircea Ilcu have been called to the Montreal Impact Major League Soccer (MLS) team.

Montreal Impact Academy are bidding on Saturday for their first major trophy.

Toronto Croatia, on the other hand, has been in Canadian professional soccer for 56 years, a team of generally older players, several are seasoned in the rigours of tough semi-professional soccer that is the CSL following some years playing at a high level in Europe. The club has a storied past, including the North American Championship victory as Toronto Metros Croatia in 1976 when the team included the legendary Portuguese superstar Eusebio.

Looking back on history, Toronto Croatia won the National Soccer League (NSL) championship four years running (1970 through 1973) – the NSL was a forerunner league of today’s CSL. In recent times, Toronto Croatia won the CSL title in 2004, in 2007 and again in 2011. In 2007 the Mississauga-based team won the inaugural Croatian World Championship and repeated that victory in 2011 with wins against NK Croatia Zurich (Switzerland), Dinamo Ottakring from Vienna, Croatia Berlin from Germany and Canberra of Australia.

Toronto Croatia won the CSL First Division for the season just ended, they lost just one game, while conceding a remarkably low 13 goals in the 22-game campaign. Montreal Impact Academy, which finished second in the First Division standings, have won their last 11 matches, nine at the end of their regular season and two in the playoffs.

Toronto Croatia captain Tonci Pirija, 32, who formerly played for Hajduk Split, NK Solin and NK Medimurje Cakovec in Croatia, also played professionally in Slovenia and Kazakhstan. He is playing his last game on Saturday for the current CSL champions.

Defender Josip Bonacin, 28, has played in three European countries, midfielder Dino Buljan, 21, defender Josip Keran, forward Bozenko Lesina, 32, Tihomir Maletic, 32, a prolific striker with 13 goals in the regular season, midfielder Josip Raso, 22, Andelo Srzentic, 22, and Marin Vucemilovic-Grgic, 25, the team’s leading goalscorer with 16 in the regular season, have all played at a high level in Europe.

Rosters for the two finalists are in your attachments. The CSL Championship on Saturday is preceded by the CSL Second Division Championship between SC Toronto Reserves and Brampton City Utd Reserves to kickoff at 12.30 pm.

The CSL Championship between Montreal Impact Academy and Toronto Croatia is shown live by Rogers TV in Ontario Viewers should check their local listing.

Toronto Croatia, Montreal Impact Academy and York Region Shooters are through to the semifinals following shut-out victories in the CSL Championship playoffs Sunday.

Toronto Croatia blanked a gutsy Niagara United 2-0 following a game that could have reversed the score had the first-year Niagara side been a little luckier with goalscoring opportunities, while the Impact academy team registered their tenth win in succession to defeat TFC Academy 2-0 and York Region Shooters squeaked through with a penalty goal, a 1-0 result over Windsor Stars.

Following a scoreless first half and well into the second half during which the visitors had two opportunities to take the lead (Lucas Folino struck the upper goal post and Mohammed Mohammed might easily have scored), Toronto Croatia forward Bozenko Lesina stepped on the Centennial Park surface as a substitute at the 78th minute mark to meet a cross from the right and head into the top right corner for a 1-0 lead. It was a picture goal, well out of reach of Niagara goalkeeper John De Luca.

Earlier in the day at the Saputo Stadium in Montreal, Mircea Ilcu struck twice to give the Montreal Impact Academy their tenth consecutive win, the first goal coming at 9 minutes, a low shot following a cross from Zakaria Messoudi for a 1-0 score at the interval.

Ilcu re-direrected a pass from midfielder Dominique Morin to score from close range in the second half, the ball going past TFC goalkeeper Adam Street at the 63rd minute mark for the home side’s second goal and it was 2-0 at the final whistle.

It was close throughout at Windsor Stadium with the teams separated by a penalty marker at 75 minutes when referee Hassane Rafai pointed to the spot following a pushing foul in the box by Windsor defender Michael Chiandussi.

SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES ADVANCE…..eliminate SC Toronto in close encounter

<![CDATA[

A goal at 13 minutes of extra time by striker Richard West in the opening quarterfinals game of the playoffs was enough to advance Serbian White Eagles to the semifinals of the CSL Championship in a close encounter with SC Toronto at Lamport Stadium in Toronto’s west-end Saturday night.

MONTREAL ACADEMY, MISSISSAUGA EAGLES, SC WATERLOO ALL REGISTER LATE SEASON VICTORIES…..Shooters hold Toronto Croatia to scoreless tie

With only one position of the top four in the CSL standings decided – that of Toronto Croatia – the schedule for the quarterfinals rests on the outcome of the upcoming midweek clash between the academy teams of TFC and the Impact from Montreal.

That conclusion follows Sunday’s results that saw Montreal Impact Academy defeat SC Toronto, 1-0 and York Region Shooters hold Toronto Croatia to a scoreless tie. In the two other games, Mississauga Eagles FC pulled away from Brantford Galaxy 6-3, and SC Waterloo downed St. Catharines Wolves, 4-0.

SC Toronto travelled to Mont Royal, Quebec for their final game of the regular season, a clash with Montreal Impact Academy looking for an opportunity to take over second position in the CSL First Division standings.

The 1-0 defeat of SC Toronto by the Quebec side puts the Impact academy team in a position of taking the runner-up position if they can defeat TFC Academy on Wednesday, October 10.

Kai Morton struck the winner for Montreal Academy at the 30 minute mark in a chippy encounter that saw a player from each side ejected. Dominic Roberts of SC Toronto was the first to be shown a red card at the 70th minute mark and Wandrille Lefevre picked up two cautions to be shown a red five minutes later.

Montreal Impact Academy has a 13-3-5 WLT record for 44 points in third position in the standings, two points behind SC Toronto with a completed regular season record of 14-4-4 for 46 points. Both teams begin playoff competition the weekend October 12 – 14.

Mississauga Eagles FC outlasted the Galaxy 6-3 in the final game for both sides played at Lions Park in Brantford, with Anthony Smith scoring the opening goal for Mississauga at the 7th minute mark.

Nick Charles tied the game 1-1 for Brantford at 17 minutes, he put the ball past the Mississauga goalkeeper Antoine Paul from seven yards off a corner kick, but immediately after the restart Andrew Samuels regained the lead for Mississauga, taking the ball down the right side to score from 20 yards.

Simo Vrakela scored from 10 yards to tie the game 2-2 for the Galaxy, the goal coming at 25 minutes, before the visitors scored twice – Anthony Smith, his second at 39 minutes and midfielder Kunle Fayehun to make it 4-2 at the interval.

Mississauga’s Andrew Samuels increased the lead to 5-2 soon after the break, followed by a goal from Aleks Zwierzynski who drove the ball just under the crossbar for a 6-2 Mississauga lead,

Damion Scott scored from five yards for Brantford Galaxy at the 85th minute mark to complete the scoring, 6-3 in favour of Mississauga Eagles.

Mississauga Eagles FC complete their season with a 8-9-5 record for 29 points, while Brantford Galaxy finish with an 8-13-1 record for 25 points.

Drazen Vukovic scored three goals in the 4-0 SC Waterloo victory over St. Catharines Wolves at Worrier Field in the University of Waterloo, to put the striker into the lead position in the CSL goalscoring title race that ends October 10.

Croatia-born Vukovic, who previously played for Brantford Galaxy and for several clubs in Europe including HNK Hajduk Split, scored at 9, 72 and 80 minutes for 20 goals in this season’s campaign. Mohammad-Ali Heydarpour struck the other SC Waterloo goal at 59 minutes.

SC Waterloo has a 10-11-1 record for 34 points and ninth place in the standings to just miss the playoffs in their inaugural CSL season, while St. Catharines Wolves completed their schedule with a 1-16-5 record for 8 points.

In the late game Sunday night, Toronto Croatia were held to a scoreless tie by York Region Shooters at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, a game that was played largely in the midfield with few opportunities for either side to find the net.

Toronto Croatia completed their regular season on top with a 15-1-6 record for 51 points, while York Region Shooters complete the regular season with a 9-2-11 record for 38 points and are presently in fifth position in the standings.

There is one game remaining in the CSL First Division – Montreal Impact Academy travel to Downsview Park on Wednesday, October 10, that’s an 8 pm kickoff.

The following eight teams have qualified for the First Division playoffs:
