SC Toronto levelled the score 1-1 at 71 minutes on a goal from the penalty spot by forward Jarek Whiteman. Montreal goalkeeper Jason Beaulieu was red carded by referee Oliviera for preventing an obvious goalscoring opportunity, Whiteman scored from the spot and the game ended 1-1.

JAREK WHITEMAN HAT-TRICK SINKS MISSISSAUGA EAGLES….Toronto Croatia and Serbian White Eagles win

SC Toronto forward Jarek Whiteman scored an early season hat-trick to lead his team to a 4-1 defeat of Mississauga Eagles FC at the Hershey Centre Friday night and in two other games in the CSL, Toronto Croatia handed London City a 3-1 home defeat while Serbian White Eagles scored two late goals in a 2-0 victory over North York Astros.

Whiteman, who scored 11 goals for the Toronto side in the 2011 season, opened the scoring against Mississauga with a goal at 27 minutes, added a second four minutes later for a 2-0 SC Toronto lead at half-time, then completed his hat-trick 13 minutes into the second half.

Mississauga goalkeeper Kofi Oppong was shown the red card for handling the ball outside of the penalty box to reduce the home side to 10 men at 36 minutes of the first half.

The lone Mississauga Eagles goal was scored by Jose Melo, while Carlos Nogueira struck the fourth goal for the visitors at 68 minutes and the 4-1 lead remained to the final whistle.

The loss was a reversal of form for Mississauga Eagles FC following their 5-1 home opener victory over North York Astros on May 11.

Toronto Croatia earned a hard-fought 3-1 win over London City at the TD Waterhouse Stadium in London and it was scoreless until Croatia’s Angelo Srzentic opened the scoring just before the break. London City tied the game 1-1 when Dalibor Mitrovic found the net at 66 minutes, the prolific Tihomir Maletic made it 2-1 for Toronto Croatia at 78 minutes and Boris Tomac completed the scoring when he found the net past London goalkeeper Zoran Pusica at the 82nd minute mark, a 3-1 final.

Two late goals, at 82 minutes by midfielder Kirie Dimitrov and at 90 minutes by Zoran Rajovic gave Serbian White Eagles the 2-0 victory at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke.

TORONTO CROATIA OFF TO FLYING START… Montreal Impact Academy and Shooters play to scoreless tie

The current CSL champions were off to a flying start to the new season with a 4-1 home victory over Brantford Galaxy at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, and in one other game played in the Canadian Soccer League Sunday, Montreal Impact Academy and York Region Shooters battled to a scoreless tie in Montreal.

It was the visitors who took the lead when Brantford forward Dave Simpson crossed the ball from the right win and found the top corner of the net and out of reach of the Croatia goalkeeper Pan Koumoulas at the 10 minute mark, but nine minutes later Toronto Croatia forward Bozenko Lesina tied the game 1-1.

Toronto Croatia’s leading scorer in 2011, striker Tihomir Maletic, struck from the penalty spot, a penalty called by referee David Barrie at 34 minutes, to make it 2-1 and that was the score at half-time.

Lesina scored his second goal one minute after the interval and at 79 minutes Croatia’s Marin Grgic  made it 4-1 with a drive from 25 yards to the left of  Galaxy goalkeeper Melford James Jr.

It was a well-played, at times physical encounter when Montreal Impact Academy and York Region Shooters failed to find the net to play to a scoreless tie at the at the St. Jean De Vianney ground in Montreal.

The best scoring chances came from defender Maxime Tissot and forward Victor Ndiaye of Montreal, but Camilo Benzi in the York Region net preserved the shutout, while Jason Beaulieu looked solid in goal for the home side.

The Montreal Impact Academy line-up included last season’s CSL leading goalscorer and former TFC Academy striker Stefan Vukovic after signing a three-month contract

Vukovic led the CSL last year with 18 goals.

“We liked what we saw from Stefan,” said Montreal Academy head coach Philippe Eullaffroy. “This contract is a nice balance for both sides, to see how he fits in here and to see if he likes it here as well. After the three months, we will revisit things then.”

Toronto Croatia gained an important 1-0 victory over league-leading Kingston FC to remain unbeaten and nudge closer to the top of the CSL First Division, while St. Catharines Wolves picked up their second win of the season, a 2-0 defeat of Niagara United, two games in the CSL First Division Saturday.

Following a scoreless first half at the Queen’s West Field in Kingston, Toronto Croatia striker Tihomir Maletic struck the only goal at the 60th minute mark, a low drive past Kingston goalkeeper Jaroslav Tesar. The goal came following a close-call by Maletic four minutes earlier that was saved by Tesar who pushed the ball on to the crossbar for the save.

Kingston forward Guillaume Surot came close to equalizing late in the second half, but the 1-0 score held to the final whistle.

Two goals by St. Catharines Wolves forward Brett Laroque gave his side their first win since May 24 in the game with Niagara United at Kalar Park in Niagara Falls, the first goal coming at 42 minutes when Laroque beat Niagara goalkeeper John De Luca following a breakaway and it was 1-0 at the interval.

Unbeaten Toronto Croatia Seeks Top Spot

Toronto Croatia are anxious to move into a more familiar top spot in the CSL First Division and Saturday’s clash with Kingston FC will provide the opportunity  to be closer to that coveted position the current champions have been waiting for.

The key, it would appear, will rest on the extent to which the Toronto side can hold the prolific Kingston high scoring sharpshooters responsible for leading the league in goals so far this season. The most outstanding player to find the net more than anyone else in the league is French-born Guillaume Surot with 14 to his credit and proving to be a handful for an opposing defence throughout the 90 minutes. But he’s not alone, with midfielders Jason Massie and Catalin Lichioiu accounting for 10 goals between them – always at the ready to find the net if not setting up the ever-dangerous Surot.

While Toronto Croatia is the only unbeaten team in the CSL First Division, Kingston has an impressive 6-0-0 record at home, which makes Saturday’s match even more intriguing.

Brampton City Utd  should not be overlooked and a sharing of the points by Kingston and Toronto Croatia on Saturday would be just fine for the GTA team which visits an improving SC Waterloo for an interesting contest on Sunday.

Remaining Sunday games report ……………..

TORONTO CROATIA WINS CSL CHAMPIONSHIP.. Eighth time in 55 year history

Toronto Croatia won the CSL championship with a 1-0 victory over Capital City FC of Ottawa Saturday.

Midfielder Hayden Fitzwilliams scored the only goal of the match at 18 minutes, a  header from 15 yards off a free kick with pace from the right wing by Tihomir Maletic that left Clint Irwin in the Capital City goal with no chance on the save.

It was a close, even game throughout that could have gone either way. Capital City, in its inaugural season in the Canadian Soccer League, had its best opportunity to equalize with an attempt by forward Sullivan Silva at 23 minutes, a drive that went over the crossbar with Toronto Croatia goalkeeper Sandi Matika beaten. Capital City defender Andre Manders also came close at 77 minutes.

It was Toronto Croatia’s eighth league title since entering professional soccer in 1956 with earlier wins in 1970, 71, 72, 73, 2000, 2004 and 2007.  It was also the second trophy win this season following a Croatian World Club Championship victory on July 2 when the Toronto side defeated teams from Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Australia in the two-week competition played in Europe.

Toronto Croatia finished second of 14 teams in the CSL First Division regular season just ended and had the best defensive record and just three defeats in the 26-game schedule. Capital City FC were not far behind in third position, conceding just one more goal and had just four losses.

Velemir Crljen, in his fourth year as head coach of Toronto Croatia said his team played well to win a very good game. “My team did a good job against a quick, younger side and the score was about right and we deserved to win,” he said.

Crljen said he was pleased with the season, close to winning the First Division, winning in Europe and now winning the championship. “I’m very happy,” he said.

Shaun Harris, head coach of Capital City, while congratulating Toronto Croatia for the win said he thought his side was on top in the second half. “Two teams with the best defensive record in the league made it a game hard to get a hit on goal, but I thought we had the better of the last 45 minutes. They are a very experienced team, but we did well, just didn’t quite make it,” he said.

The CSL season started early May with 14 teams in each of two divisions and will announce its individual award winners November 13. Mississauga Eagles FC B, the club’s reserve team in the CSL, won the Second Division championship by defeating Brampton City Utd B on October 22.

TORONTO CROATIA AND CAPITAL CITY ADVANCE

Toronto Croatia and Capital City FC are a step closer to the CSL Championship with second leg quarterfinal victories Sunday.

Toronto Croatia were highly favoured going into the second game with a 4-0 win from last week’s first leg and a 4-1 result on Sunday confirmed Croatia’s place in the semi-finals. Capital City FC and Montreal Impact Academy played their second leg on Sunday with the Ottawa side winning 2-1, which followed last week’s 1-1 tie for a 3-2 goals aggregate in favour of Capital City.

Midfielder Marin Vucemilovic Grgic opened the scoring for Toronto Croatia at Centennial Stadium, the goal coming, the goal coming on a breakaway after just 4 minutes.

Hayden Fitwilliams then scored twice, at 31 minutes when he headed home a cross from the right wing for a 2-0 lead and again at 43 minutes when he drove a low shot from 15 yards past Melford James Jr in the Mississauga goal, a 3-0 lead at half-time.

Croatia forward Bozenko Lesina made it 4-0 at 65 minutes and with the visiting Mississauga Eagles coming more into the picture late in the game, Jose Melo scored at 81 minutes for a 4-1 final score and 8-1 goals aggregate.

Toronto Croatia will now be at home to York Region Shooters in the semi-finals during the weekend October 21 – 23.

Capital City FC went ahead 1-0 after 10 minutes in their game with Montreal Impact Academy at the Terry Fox Stadium in Ottawa when midfielder Mahir Hadziresic lifted the ball from the centre line to Akil DeFreitas who drove the ball on to the crossbar and into the net. It was 1-0 at the break.

Hadziresic made it 2-0 for the home side when he beat Montreal ‘keeper Maxime Crepeau at 53 minutes, but Montreal reduced the lead to 2-1 on a goal by Kevin Luarca at 77 minutes and that score held to the final whistle.  Capital City advanced to the semi-finals on a 3-2 goals aggregate.

The semi-finals will be played the weekend October 21 -23 with venues to be announced:

Capital City FC vs. Serbian White Eagles

Toronto Croatia vs. York Region Shooters

In the CSL Second Division Championship Final, it will be Brampton City Utd B vs. Mississauga Eagles FC B on Saturday,

October 22 at the St. Joan of Arc ground at Maple, a  3 pm kickoff.
