YORK REGION SHOOTERS ELIMINATE SC TORONTO IN CLIFFHANGER

SC Toronto won the match but York Region Shooters took the spoils following a ding-dong 127 minutes of entertaining  second leg quarterfinal playoff soccer at Lamport Stadium in Toronto’s west-end Friday night.

The second of a two-game home and away series to decide the team to advance to the semifinals in pursuit of the CSL Championship – the Shooters won the first clash 1-0 on October 9 – was described by Rogers TV commentator Zamir Karim as “One of the best games in the CSL all season.”

The score at the end of 97 minutes of regular time plus added time was 4-3 for SC Toronto, which added up to a 4-4 aggregate over the two games.  30 minutes of extra time were played to decide the winner – which it didn’t, so the 4-4 aggregate went into penalty kicks, won 4-2 by York Region Shooters.

There were nine attempts for the 4-2 penalty kick victory by York Region, but the game itself also saw three spot kicks and all found the net.

The first produced the opening goal of the game when SC Toronto’s Massimo Mirabelli scored following a tripping incident called by referee Gianni Facchini.  That was followed by a similar infringement by SC Toronto and forward Kadian Lecky scored for the Shooters at 39 minutes, a 1-1 score at half-time.

SC Toronto went ahead at 52 minutes, a goal by Alexandros Halis, but the visitors tied the game 2-2 10 minutes later from the third spot kick and like the earlier one, Kadian Lecky made no mistake for his second of the match. Referee Facchini ordered the kick following a pushing incident in the SC Toronto box.

Mirabelli struck his second of the game at 73 minutes for a SC Toronto lead, but at 89 minutes Jason De Thomasis scored an untidy goal, but one which tied the game 3-3 for the Shooters and which appeared to be the quarterfinal decider.

But SC Toronto came back to score again when Halis headed past York Region goalkeeper Adam Majer and two defenders at the 96th  minute mark, a last minute life-line that led to the 30 minutes of extra time. The goal came after the home side’s John Louis Perruzo was red-carded at 93 minutes and before Lecky was sent off the bench at 97 minutes.

SC Toronto lost coach Carmine Isacco when he was ordered out of the game just before half-time for dissent.

TORONTO CROATIA IN STRONG POSITION EARLY..Friday victory in opening game of CSL playoffs

Two second half goals by prolific striker Tihomir Maletic assured Toronto Croatia of a decisive 4-0 victory over Mississauga Eagles FC in the opening quarterfinals game of  CSL playoffs at The Hershey Centre Friday.

It was Croatia midfielder Tonci Pirija who opened the scoring at 20 minutes when he beat Mississauga goalkeeper Melford James Jr and Marin Grgic added a second at 36 minutes for a 2-0 score at halftime.

Toronto Croatia pressed again in the second half and Maletic scored his first at 53 minutes and struck his team’s fourth goal at 90 minutes for a 4-0 final. Maletic scored 17 goals for Toronto Croatia in regular season play.

Mississauga lost defender Shaun MacDonald when he was shown a red card by referee Justin Tasev at the 85th minute mark for Serious Foul Play. He will miss the second leg quarterfinal.

Niagara midfielder Rudy Pikzinski opened the scoring for the home side at 46 minutes following a scoreless first half. Pikzinski lifted the ball over the head of Brampton goalkeeper Euloge Awitor Kodzo and Braletic tied the game 1-1 with his first goal at the 62nd minute mark.

Brampton’s Marcos Nunes put the visiting side up 2-1 at the 74th minute when he found the net past Niagara goalkeeper Jonathan Buggeling following a breakaway down the right side and Braletic increased the lead to 3-1 at 91 minutes, the score at the final whistle.

KINGSTON FC ON TOP WITH 3-1 VICTORY…. Serbian White Eagles, Waterloo and Toronto Croatia also win Sunday

Sunday, May 26 – Kingston FC extended their lead at the top of the CSL First Division with a 3-1 defeat of Astros Vasas FC at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York, and in three other games played in the CSL Sunday night, Toronto Croatia overcame an early 1-0 deficit to beat London City 4-1, Serbian White Eagles nipped York Region Shooters 1-0 and SC Waterloo took control in the second half of their home encounter to down new club Burlington SC, 4-2, four games in the Canadian Soccer League Sunday night.

Following a scoreless, well-played first half, Kingston opened the scoring at 55 minutes with a goal by forward Guilliaume Surot and the French-born striker struck again seven minutes later when he drove the ball from 20 yards past Astros Vasas goalkeeper Erno Bostyan. It was Surot’s 5th and 6th goals of the season.

Kingston FC went further ahead with a goal at 80 minutes by midfielder Kihara Wainganjo and Astros Vasas reduced the lead with a goal by forward Tristan Watson who found the net past Kingston goalkeeper Jaroslav Tesar at the 91st minute mark, a 3-1 final in favour of the visitors.

It was a tough encounter at the Joan of Arc ground in Maple where the home side went down 1-0 to Serbian White Eagles on a picture goal at 77 minutes by Djorjije Strunjas. Serbian Eagles’ Ramon Bailey moved the ball to Kiril Dimitrov on the left wing and after beating two defenders Dimitrov crossed the ball for Strunjas to head into the net from six yards. It was Strunjas second goal of the season.

It was an even first half contest between the home side SC Waterloo and visiting Burlington SC at Warrior Field with the score tied 1-1 at half-time on goals by forward Mohamed Mohamed of Burlington SC at 26 minutes and Drazen Vukovic of Waterloo at 35 minutes, but three second half goals by SC Waterloo, a second by Vukuvic and two from Adis Hasecic, made the difference. Nicholas Lindsey scored the second goal for the visitors for a final score 4-2 in favour of SC Waterloo.

London City led 1-0 at the break in the game with Toronto Croatia at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, a goal at 43 minutes by midfielder Nenad Begovic, but the home side responded with four second half goals by striker Tihomir Maletic at 64 minutes, Kresimir Prgomet five minutes later, Bujamic Mladen at 75 minutes and Ainsley Deer just before the final whistle for a 4-1 final score.

Both teams ended the game with 10 men following the ejection for violent conduct by referee Ben Jacobs of London City’s Younan Samra and Daniel Niksic of Toronto Croatia.

TORONTO CROATIA, YORK REGION SHOOTERS REGISTER OPENING WINS…..SC Waterloo and Niagara United tie 1-1

CSL champions Toronto Croatia continued their winning way with a narrow 3-2 defeat of Kingston FC, while York Region Shooters also opened their new season account with a 1-0 victory over Astros Vasas FC, and SC Waterloo played to a 1-1 tie with Niagara United, three games in the CSL First Division Sunday night. One other game scheduled, Burlington SC vs. Serbian White Eagles, was postponed due to ground conditions at Nelson Stadium in Burlington.

Kingston FC opened the scoring with a goal from Catalin Lichioiu at the 23rd minute mark at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke and Roberto Galle tied the score 1-1 for Toronto Croatia five minutes later.

Striker Tihomir Maletic put the home side in the lead at 31 minutes when he intercepted just outside the penalty box to move in and drive a low shot from 18 yards just inside the post and Maletic increased the Croatia lead to 3-1 at 41 minutes, beating Kingston goalkeeper Jaroslav Tesar from 10 yards. It was 3-1 at the break.

Nathan Klemencic struck for the visitors to reduce the Croatia lead to 3-2 at 59 minutes and Kingston’s Jason Massie came close to equalizing when he caught the goalpost with a last minute attempt on goal in added time with Croatia goalkeeper Anton Ilic well beaten. It was 3-2 at the final whistle.

It was looking like a scoreless tie at the St. Joan of Arc ground in Maple until York Region Shooters scored the only goal of the game at 91 minutes by Dino Gardener from a pass by Richard West. Gardiner hit the ball into the roof of the net, beating Astros Vasas goalkeeper Antal-Andras Toth with the hard drive from just outside the box.

Following a scoreless first half, midfielder Adis Hasecic playing on the left wing for SC Waterloo, struck the opening goal from 20 yards, a drive that entered the net off the crossbar to put the home side one-up against Niagara United at Warrior Field in Waterloo.

Niagara struck back with a goal at 80 minutes from midfielder Jordi Amores who collected the rebound from a free kick to find the net and tie the game 1-1, a score that held until the final whistle.

TFC ACADEMY ELIMINATED FOLLOWING 2-1 LOSS TO TORONTO CROATIA

Toronto Croatia defeated TFC Academy 2-1 and in doing so eliminated the Toronto FC senior academy team from the playoffs at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke Thursday night.

Defender Josip Keran scored the opening goal for Croatia at 9 minutes of the game with a run down the left wing before driving the ball between the goalkeeper and the near post. It was 1-0 at half-time.

Forward Bozenko Lesina made it 2-0 at 61 minutes, he put the ball past TFC goalkeeper Chad Bush from close range after collecting the ball from a corner kick.

TFC pressed to get back into the game and they did eventually score with a drive by Mchael Bilak from just outside the 18 yard line for a 2-1 score, the goal coming at 76 minute and an equalizer appeared a possibility in the last 20 minutes, but the final whistle came with the score 2-1 in favour of Toronto Croatia.

It was Toronto Croatia’s 17th win of the campaign for a 17-3-5 WLT record and they occupy second position in the standings with one game remaining in the regular season. They travel to Windsor for a game with the Stars on Saturday night.

The loss put TFC Academy out of the playoffs with four games remaining, they have a 7-13-2 record for 23 points.

The eighth spot still open will be filled by Mississauga Eagles FC or Brantford Galaxy and with a six point edge and superior goals, the Mississauga Eagles are strongly favoured to fill the last position.

SC TORONTO CAPTURE FIRST DIVISION TITLE

SC Toronto captured the CSL First Division title with a 5-2 come-from-behind victory over Brampton City Utd, while Serbian White Eagles and Toronto Croatia played to a 1-1. In one other game scheduled for Friday night, the London City vs. TFC Academy game was called off following heavy rain at Cove Road in London.

It was the 19th win of the season for SC Toronto and the win came in spectacular fashion after being down 2-0 to a gritty and determined Brampton squad battling for a playoff spot.

Brampton’s Oswald Adu opened the scoring at the 7th minute mark at Lamport Stadium in downtown Toronto and the visitors made it 2-0 from the penalty spot at 20 minutes, the goal scored by forward Kevin Omokhua.

SC Toronto’s Jarek Whiteman scored his first of two goals at 33 minutes to reduce the lead to 2-1 and Alexandros Halis scored his first of two goals to tie the game 2-2 at 38 minutes.

It was 2-2 at the break, but not before referee Richard Oliveira ordered Toronto head coach Carmine Isacco out of the game for persistent dissent.

SC Toronto went ahead 3-2 on the second goal by Halis, his 11th of the season at 48 minutes and Whiteman also scored his second and also his 11th of the season with picture goal  at the 51st minute mark to increase the home lead to 4-2.

Whiteman’s goal came off a corner kick and the Toronto forward volleyed from 15 yards for one of the most impressive strikes of the season.

Andy Garcia was shown the red card by referee Oliveira following a second caution to the Brampton midfielder, the ejection coming at the 79th minute mark.

Massimo Mirabelli scored SC Toronto’s fifth goal at 83 minutes for a 5-2 final score.

The win, coupled with a 1-1 tie for second place Toronto Croatia, gave SC Toronto the first division title with three games remaining for both teams. SC Toronto have a nine-point margin over Croatia, but the 19th win for SC Toronto secured the title – it’s the total wins criterion used as a tie-breaker should the teams finish the season tied on points. Toronto Croatia can tie on points at the conclusion, but they are unable to match the total wins.

The Toronto Croatia tie with Serbian White Eagles was the right outcome from a game played with highly attractive soccer with good pace at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke. It was Croatia that took the lead on a goal by Hayden Fitzwilliams at the 38th minute mark. Fitzwilliams showed good footwork to maneuver himself into a position to shoot after picking up the ball headed out from a corner kick. He beat Serbian Eagles’ goalkeeper Milos Djurkovic with a low shot into the corner of the net.

 It was 1-0 at half-time.

Serbian White Eagles pressed in a second half that became more physical as the game progressed and the home side broke through at 65 minutes when Nikola Milosevic lifted the ball into the Croatia box, the ball was picked up by midfielder Milan Rakic who was brought down by Croatia goalkeeper Antonio Ilic.

Referee Yursi Rudolf pointed to the spot and Milos Scepanovic scored the tying goal, his ninth of the season.

Toronto Croatia have a 15-3-5 WLT record for 50 points, while Serbian White Eagles are at 11-5-9 for 42 points and now in fourth position in the standings.

Matthew Cain scored for St. Catharines Wolves at the 22nd minute mark in a 5-1 result that mathematically eliminated St. Catharines Wolves from the playoffs.

Montreal have an improved 11-8-5 record for 38 points and are fifth in the First Division standings.

London City and Windsor Stars battled to a scoreless tie to the interval at Cove Road in London and it was just after the break that London`s Gent Miftari scored his side`s winning goal following a play started in the London half by Gentjan Dervishi.  Dervishi moved the ball to Younan Samra, who set up Miftari on the 6 yard line where the midfielder beat Windsor goalkeeper Anthony Santilli.

Windsor had an opportunity to tie the score when awarded a penalty at 54 minutes. Forward Gino Berdardi was fouled in the box, but the spot kick, taken by the border team’s David Kadoic, was saved by London ‘keeper Fabian Knezevic. It was 1-0 London at the final whistle.

Brantford Galaxy midfielder Nenad Begovic opened the scoring at the 15th minute mark at Lions Park in Brantford, he struck the goal from 35 yards off a corner kick and TFC Academy tied the game at 34 minutes on a goal by Sebastian Arrangio, it was 1-1 at the half.

London City took the lead at Cove Road when forward Sean Alden struck his first goal in the CSL at the 4-minte mark, he found the net from close in past Toronto goalkeeper Scott Cliff.

FULL MARKS FOR SC TORONTO AND TORONTO CROATIA AT THE TOP

SC Toronto continued its relentless pursuit of the First Division title with a 2-0 victory over Mississauga Eagles FC and Toronto Croatia held its position with a 5-1 defeat of North York Astros. In two other games in the CSL Sunday, Brampton dropped London City 5-2 and it was a scoreless tie in a game cut short between St. Catharines and Capital City FC.

Following a scoreless first half at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga during which the home side had a decided advantage in the play, it was visiting SC Toronto that opened the scoring at 58 minutes following a defensive miscue when a pass back involving goalkeeper Melford James Jr. went wrong.

The pass was intercepted and this allowed Toronto forward Andrea Lombardo to intercept and he quickly put the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Toronto SC increased their lead at 82 minutes when Jarek Whiteman struck from just outside the box, a 2-0 lead that held to the final whistle.

The league-leading SC Toronto has 53 points from 21 games.

Toronto Croatia kept pace at Esther Shiner Stadium with a 5-1 victory over the winless Astros and it was Tihomir Maletic who opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal at 26 minutes and this was followed by a tying goal just two minutes later by North York Astros`defender Diego Benzi.

Astros`goalkeeper Enea Perego was shown the red card by referee Richard Oliveira at 35 minutes for foul on a Croatia forward and he was replaced by substitute goalkeeper Damon Naghavi. It was 1-1 at half-time.

Croatia went ahead 2-1 on a goal by Milan Grgic who found the net past Naghavi at 54 minutes and Maletic scored a second goal, also on a penalty kick at 77 minutes, for a 3-1 lead. It was Maletic`s sixth goal of the weekend following his four goals on Friday night in a 5-2 defeat of Montreal Impact Academy and his 16th of the season.

Toronto Croatia continued to attack the 10-men Astros and went further ahead with a goal at 85 minutes by Hugo Herrera and it was Herrera who completed the scoring in added time for a 5-1 final score.

Brampton opened the scoring in the third minute at Victoria Park in Brampton when midfielder Andy Garcia put the ball though to Judah Hernandez to tap in past London goalkeeper Fabian Knezevic.

London tied the game 1-1 at 27 minutes when Eris Tafaj struck a drive into the top left corner out of reach on Brampton ‘keeper Roy Blanche game remained tied to the half-time whistle.

Hernandez scored his second goal at the 61st minute mark for a 2-1 Brampton lead, but 10 minutes later London’s Omar Brani equalized at 2-2.

The home side went ahead 3-2 at 76 minutes on a goal by Jeremy Shepherd, and Richard West increased the lead to 4-2 two minutes later – it was West’s 17th goal of the campaign and he continues to lead the CSL scoring race.

Denny Velastagui rounded the scoring for Brampton from the penalty spot after Richard West was brought down by Knezevic in the box, a 5-2 final.

The three points gives Brampton City Utd a fighting chance for a playoff spot, they have 33 points from 20 games, while London City will not make the top eight in the CSL First Division this season.

While the first half between St. Catharines Wolves and Capital City FC was played in the best of conditions, that all changed quickly as the teams left the field for the dressing rooms at Club Roma in St. Catharines. A sudden, severe thunderstorm accompanied by lightning caused flooding on the playing surface such that referee Jeff Fearnall had little alternative but to suspend the game, which he later abandoned with the score tied 0-0.

CSL rules consider a first half completed as a game completed if abandoned, so the score goes into the record books as a scoreless tie.

In the CSL Second Division Sunday:

St. Catharines Wolves B  2,  KW United FC  2

There is one game in the CSL this weekend remaining:

Sun, Sep 11 Hershey Centre 9:00 PM Mississauga Eagles FC B vs Niagara United

SC Toronto took a rare tumble with a 4-2 loss to Toronto Croatia in CSL games Sunday, while Capital City FC were impressive in their 3-0 victory over Montreal Impact Academy and in one other game, TFC Academy upset York Region Shooters, 2-1.

SC Toronto have been superb in conceding just nine goals in 16 games going into Sunday’s game, but found themselves down 4-0 in the second half against Toronto Croatia at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke.

Croatia midfielder Augustin de Medina opened the scoring for the home side at seven minutes from a direct free kick well outside the penalty box and Bozenko Lesina made it 2-0 eight minutes later.

Hayden Fitzwilliams increased the lead to 3-0 when he beat SC Toronto goalkeeper Scott Cliff with a low shot into the bottom left corner at 32 minutes and that was the score at half-time.

Tihomir Maletic increased the Croatia lead to 4-0 at 53 minutes, his sixth goal of the season,  before the league leaders struck for their first goal at 69 minutes when midfielder Alon Badet found the net past Croatia ‘keeper Antonio Ilic and this was followed by a second goal for the visitors by Alexandros Halis who headed past Ilic at 89 minutes for a 4-2 final score.

The win puts Toronto Croatia within four points of leaders SC Toronto, both team have played 17 games.

Following early pressure by the home side, Capital City FC took the lead at the 36th minute mark when a drive by Sullivan Silva was saved by Montreal goalkeeper Domenic Provost, but the rebound was picked up by Collin Harrison to give the Ottawa team a 1-0 lead, the score at half-time.

Midfielder Emir Zrnic made it 2-0 at 66 minutes, he picked up a through ball from the right wing by Kenny Caceros to lift the ball over the oncoming Provost into the net.

While Montreal fought back to get back into the game, it was Capital City that again found the net on a goal at 82 minutes by forward Akil DeFreitas who took a corner kick from Caceros to score from 15 yards, his sixth of the season to increase the score to 3-0.

It was Capital City’s tenth win of the season and a seventh clean sheet for goalkeeper Irwin on a day designated Ottawa Emergency Services Appreciation Day which boosted the crowd for an entertaining, well-played encounter.

York Region Shooters suffered a set-back in their home clash with TFC Academy at the St. Joan of Arc ground in Maple and it started with an opening goal by TFC’s Tristan Jackman at the 9th minute mark.

Striker Stefan Vukovic drove a low shot into the net past Shooters’ goalkeeper Camilo Benzi at 24 minutes, his 14 goal of the season for a 2-0 score at the break.
