MONTREAL IMPACT ACADEMY SECURE PLAYOFF SPOT WITH 2-1 VICTORY WHILE DEFENDING CHAMPIONS GALAXY GO DOWN IN WINDSOR

Current CSL champions Brantford Galaxy received a surprise set-back in their bid for a playoff berth, losing 4-1 in the hands of Windsor Stars at Windsor Stadium Saturday night, while in a game played earlier in the day, Montreal Impact Academy gained an important 2-1 win over Mississauga Eagles FC at the Saputo Stadium in Montreal.

Forward Aaron Byrd opened the scoring for Windsor Stars at the 13th minute and increased the lead to 2-0 at the 35th minute mark.

Midfielder Nenad Begovic reduced the lead to 2-1 with a goal for the Galaxy at the 54 minutes, but that was short-lived when one minute later at 55 minutes David Kadoic increased the home lead to 3-1, scoring on a breakaway.  Kadoic again beat Brantford goalkeeper Vladimir Markotic at 71 minutes when he found the net with a drive from 20 yards for a 4-1 score which remained to the final whistle.

Montreal Impact took the lead on a goal by Kevin Luarca at the 41st minute mark, a 1-0 score in favour of the home side at the interval.

Mississauga forward Darragh Roe put the ball past Montreal goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau to equalize at 61 minutes and Chris-Michel Rumuri struck the winner for the Quebec side at the 63rd minute mark and the score remained to the final whistle.

The win clinches a playoff berth for Montreal Impact Academy, now involved in a three-way tie for fourth place in the standings. They join SC Toronto, Toronto Croatia, Capital City FC, York Region Shooters and Serbian White Eagles, with two spots still to be decided.

With two games remaining in their regular season schedule (against Montreal Impact Academy and Capital City FC), Saturday’s defeat puts the defending CSL champions Brantford Galaxy in a difficult position to secure one of those two remaining berths. The remaining two positions are being pursued also by Mississauga Eagles FC, Brampton City Utd and TFC Academy.

Eight teams will enter into a home and away quarterfinals series, to get underway during October. There will be one game in each of the two semifinals and one game for the CSL Championship Final.

In a southwestern Ontario clash,  London City visited Windsor to hold the Stars to a scoreless tie before a good crowd at Windsor Stadium.

TFC striker Stefan Vukovic tied the game 1-1, scoring from the penalty spot after he was brought down in the box at 24 minutes, but Akil DeFreitas of Capital City put his side up 2-1 just four minutes later.

The Ottawa side’s William Beauge made it 3-1 just before the interval and there was one goal in the second half when Casey Condray headed home after the ball came off the crossbar – it all came from a corner kick at 58 minutes – the final score 4-1.

The eastern Ontario team now has a 5-1-1 WLT record for 16 points and will be bidding for the top position when they meet  York Region Shooters in Ottawa Sunday.

Forward Victor Ndiaye opened the scoring at the 17th minute mark for Montreal Impact Academy in the game with York Region Shooters at the Marie Victorin Stadium in Montreal and Des Humphrey equalized for the visitors at 42 minutes, a 1-1 tie at the interval.

GALAXY EARN OVERDUE VICTORY, MISSISSAUGA EAGLES WIN DING-DONG STRUGGLE AT COVE ROAD, SERBIAN EAGLES TIE WITH WINDSOR

Brantford Galaxy nipped TFC Academy 1-0, Mississauga Eagles FC pulled away in an action-packed second half to defeat London City 4-2 and Serbian White Eagles were held to a 1-1 result at home by Windsor Stars, three games in the Canadian Soccer League Friday night.

Brantford Galaxy and TFC Academy both went into Lamport Stadium searching for a win and a goal at nine minutes by forward Ranko Golijanin was enough to earn the visitors their first victory since May 22.

TFC lost the ball in their own half and it ended up with Golijinin who drove the ball into the corner of the net past Academy ‘keeper Angelo Cavalluzzo.

The Galaxy held the lead throughout the second half despite losing defender Stanko Karacic just before the interval when he was shown the red card by referee Hassan Rafai for a two-footed challenge, judged to be Serious Foul Play on TFC defender Dakar Charles.

Serbian White Eagles appeared to have an edge in their game with Windsor Stars at Centennial Stadium, but it was the border team that took a first half 1-0 lead by midfielder Danny Dragoi who found the net from seven yards following a breakaway.

The home side tied the game 1-1 at the 42nd minute mark when midfielder Milos Scepanovic and forward Sasa Viciknez combined to beat Windsor goalkeeper Anthony Santilli. It was Viciknez who found the net for 1-1  at half-time and that was the final score despite numerous opportunities for Serbian White Eagles to take the lead — particularly by captain Alex Braletic.

There were plenty of goals at Cove Road in London where the City had to draw on their substitute goalkeeper following an injury to number one, Fabian Knezevic. He was carried off following a collision early in the second half and taken to the local hospital.

The injury came with the score 1-1 on goals by Eagles’ Shawn Brown at 14 minutes followed by a tying goal from London forward Mike Marcoccia four minutes later. London’s Thomas Beattie struck the crossbar late in the first half, there were no further goals and it was 1-1 at the break.

Scott Chalmers, an 18 year old ‘keeper from the University of Western Ontario took over in goal for London City and conceded a goal at 58 minutes when Mississauga forward Jose Melo struck to make it 2-1. This was followed by a goal five minutes later when the visitors went ahead 3-1, scored by defender Tristan Scott.

London reduced the lead to 3-2 when Gentian Buzali scored at 69 minutes, but almost immediately at 70 minutes Mississauga Eagles’ midfielder Gala Gabriel Gala scored his team’s fourth goal for a 4-2 final score.

The Quebec team took a 1-0 lead at 32 minutes
when Yacinthe Michelog struck a low shot to beat Stars’ goalkeeper Anthony
Santili from the edge of the penalty box.

Windsor played with more confidence in the
second half and pressed for an equalizer, but it was Montreal Impact Academy
that found the net when at 92 minutes they were awarded a penalty. Defender
Filip Rocca brought down a Montreal defender and referee John Oliva had no
hesitation in pointing to the spot. Felix Cardin scored to make it 2-0 and the
score held to the final whistle.

Montreal Impact Academy’s next game is
against SC Toronto at Lamport Stadium Friday, May 13, while Windsor Stars will
host Brampton City Utd at Windsor Stadium next Saturday, May 14.

There are two games remaining this weekend when
Serbian White Eagles visit Maple for the York Region Shooters opener at 6 pm
and  two hours later TFC Academy are at
home to Mississauga Eagles at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke.
