TORONTO CROATIA ENDS SEASON WITH UNCERTAINTY……but Toronto Croatia reserves capture Second Division title

Toronto Croatia completed its regular season with a 2-0 victory over Brampton City Utd at Centennial Stadium Saturday, but will have to wait until the following day to know the team’s final position in the First Division standings.

Last season’s CSL champions will end up in second or third position, depending on the outcome of the York Region Shooters vs Kingston FC encounter Sunday afternoon. York Region will need a win to finish in the runner-up position, anything less will assure Toronto Croatia of second spot.

Jarek Whiteman scored both goals for the home side, opening the scoring after 15 minutes when he beat Brampton goalkeeper Euloge Awitor Kodzo with a solo effort after collecting the ball from outside the box and moving in to score. It was 1-0 at the break.

Whitman’s second goal came from a left foot drive from 15 yards into the top left corner and the game ended 2-0. The two goals were Whiteman’s 4th and 5th of the season
Toronto Croatia end the regular season with a 14-3-5 WLT record for 47 points, while Brampton City Utd completes its regular season with a 13-8-1 record for 40 points, ending in fourth position.

Toronto Croatia B, the reserve team, also won its final game, a resounding 5-1 defeat of Serbian White Eagles B to jump over Niagara United B and London City B in the standings.

Toronto Croatia reserve squad ended its campaign with a 9-4-3 record for 30 points, Niagara United B ended with 29 points and London City B has 28.

SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES CLINCH LAST PLAYOFF BERTH……..3-1 victory over Windsor Stars Friday

Serbian White Eagles probably won their most important game of the season at Esther Shiner Stadium Friday, a 3-1 victory over Windsor Stars to clinch the last playoff berth of eight teams to move forward into the quarterfinals of the CSL Championship.

Serbian Eagles needed the outright win to be sure of a playoff spot, anything less would have provided Astros Vasas a last minute opportunity to take the coveted last playoff slot with their final game of the season – also against Windsor Stars – on Sunday.

Serbian Eagles’ forward Sahjah Reid put his team on the road to victory with two first half goals to give the Toronto team a decided edge with a 2-0 lead at the break. Reid struck his first at the 11th minute mark and found the net again past Windsor goalkeeper Anthony Santilli at 21 minutes.

Windsor lost forward Gino Berardi after being shown the red card by referee Michael Bradley for dissent at 37 minutes, but the visitors bounced back with a goal by Stephen Ademolu who found the net from the penalty spot at 46 minutes. Ademolu was fouled in the box by Serbian defender Mohammed Habibzi and referee Bradley ordered the kick.

Midfielder Milos Rudan scored the third goal for Serbian Eagles, a drive from 16 yards over the head of goalkeeper Santilli at 73 minutes for the 3-1 final score.

Serbian White Eagles complete their 22-game regular season with a 8-12-2 record for 26 points in eighth position in the First Division standings and will travel to Kingston for the quarterfinal game on October 13.

Windsor Stars have already secured a playoff berth and have a 8-10-3 record for 27 points with the one game remaining, against Astros Vasas FC on Sunday.

PLENTY TO PLAY FOR IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE…… season ends in First Division

Six teams will play their last game of the regular season this coming weekend – five will play a single game, while Windsor Stars will take a weekend swing into Toronto for a game against Serbian White Eagles Friday night and their regular season finale against Astros Vasas FC on Sunday.

This weekend closes the First Division season in time for the beginning of the CSL Championship Playoffs during Thanksgiving Weekend, October 11 – 14.

Oddly, the two games played by Windsor are against the two candidates bidding for the last playoff berth of eight. Serbian White Eagles have a point edge over Astros Vasas, so an outright win by Serbian Eagles on Friday puts them in the playoffs. Astros Vasas must win to have any chance at all and even that would depend on the outcome of the Serbian Eagles game.

Games played by York Region Shooters and Toronto Croatia will decide which is second and which is third in the standings.

And while all of this is going on, Kingston FC will visit Maple, just north of Toronto Sunday evening for a clash with York Regions Shooters, but in the knowledge that whatever the outcome, the First Division title is theirs.

KINGSTON FC WINS CSL FIRST DIVISION…..York Region, Toronto Croatia go down to defeat Wednesday

The two teams battling for the top positions in the CSL First Division went down to defeat in the only two games played in the CSL Wednesday. A resounding 5-0 victory by SC Waterloo over second place York Region Shooters and a 1-0 triumph for Serbian White Eagles over third place defending CSL champions Toronto Croatia, confirmed Kingston FC as winners of the First Division title

Kingston wins the CSL First Division with one game remaining in the regular season. The new-look eastern Ontario side has captured the CSL’s top division in just its second year following a 14th position of 16 teams in the league standings in its inaugural 2012 year. But under new management and a new head coach the club has been relentless in its pursuit of honours from kickoff in May throughout the 2013 campaign.

A goal at the 18th minute mark by Sahjah Reid of Serbian White Eagles was enough to secure the three points against Toronto Croatia at Esther Shiner Stadium when he took a pass outside the box to move in and beat Toronto Croatia goalkeeper Antonio Ilic with a low drive inside the left post.

It was 1-0 at half-time and at the final whistle for Serbian White Eagles with Toronto Croatia ending the game with 10 men after Ilic was shown the red card for serious play at 76 minutes.

Serbian White Eagles now have an improved 7-12-2 for 23 points in eighth position in the standings and with one game remaining are in a position with Astros Vasas FC to keep up a bid for the eighth and final playoff spot.

Toronto Croatia are in third position with a 13-3-5 record for 44 points, with one game remaining, tied on points with York Region Shooters following their defeat at Waterloo.

SC Waterloo were impressive with their 5-0 victory at Warrior Field, which follows a 9-0 defeat of St. Catharines Wolves Sunday. Defender Dado Hadrovic opened the scoring at 35 minutes and David Muir made it 2-0 three minutes later, the score at half-time.

Vladimir Zelenbaba increased the Waterloo lead to 3-0 at 47 minutes, Harris Fazlagic made it 4-0 at 65 minutes and Adis Hasecic rounded the scoring at 5-0 at the 82nd minute mark.

Waterloo complete their regular season with a strong showing 11-7-4 record for 37 points to secure fifth position in the standings, while York Region Shooters are at 14-5-2 for 44 points with one game remaining.

KEY GAMES SCHEDULED WEDNESDAY

Two key regular season games with implications for the CSL First Division title and the one outstanding berth in the playoffs for the CSL Championship are scheduled in the Canadian Soccer League Wednesday night.

The Serbian White Eagles vs Toronto Croatia game postponed on July 12 will now be played Wednesday, October 2 at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York with a 9 pm kickoff, is important for both teams, but for different reasons.

Toronto Croatia continues to bid for second place in the CSL First Division, while Serbian White Eagles hope to win enough points from their two remaining regular season games to clinch the last of the eight playoff positions.

But Astros Vasas FC are also in the hunt for the last playoff spot. The North York-based club has one game remaining and that’s against Windsor Stars on October 6 – two days after Serbian White Eagles are scheduled to play their last regular season game, also against Windsor, on October 4.

While a win would help Serbian White Eagles Wednesday, the last playoff berth will not be decided until October 4 – or even October 6, depending upon the outcome of Wednesday’s clash.

York Region Shooters, which continues a battle for first or second position in the First Division, are at Waterloo Wednesday with just a slim chance for the title top spot now occupied by Kingston FC. Failing that, the fight is on with Toronto Croatia for the runner-up second slot.

Game time at Warrior Field is also 9pm.

KINGSTON ON EDGE OF FIRST DIVISION TITLE WITH SUNDAY VICTORY………York Region tie with Toronto Croatia and Waterloo blitz St. Catharines 9-0

Kingston FC defeated Burlington SC 5-3, Toronto Croatia and York Region Shooters played to a 2-2 tie, while SC Waterloo had a field day with a 9-0 blitz of St. Catharines Wolves, three games in the CSL Sunday.

Guillaume Surot opened the scoring for Kingston FC at 35 minutes at the Nelson Stadium in Burlington, Abdullah Abdullah equalized 1-1 for Burlington SC at 37 minutes, then Surot scored again at 42 minutes for a 2-1 lead for the visitors at half-time. The goals were numbers 27 and 28 of the season for Surot.

Midfielder Jason Massie increased the Kingston lead to 3-1 at 46 minutes, Edgar Soglo made it 4-1 at 48 minutes and Kenny Caceros scored Kingston’s fifth goal at 51 minutes.

Burlington then scored twice, Predrag Papaz at 53 minutes, then Milos Vucinic at 74 minutes for a 5-3 Kingston lead, the score at the final whistle.

With one game remaining in the regular season, Kingston now has a 16-3-2 record for 50 points and six points clear of York Region Shooters and Toronto Croatia, both of which have two games to play. Only a major change in the goal differential can prevent Kingston from winning the First Division title.

Burlington SC ended the season with a 7-15-0 record for 21 points and are eliminated from the playoffs as a result of the defeat.

Midfielder Gerard Ladiyou opened the scoring for York Region Shooters at the 6th minute mark at the Hershey Field in Mississauga, but Kresimir Prgomet tied the score 1-1 for Toronto Croatia at 17 minutes.

Tihomir Maletic scored on a breakaway solo effort to put Toronto Croatia 2-1 up and at 87 minutes Richard West tied the score 2-2 for York Region, the score at the final whistle.

York Region Shooters’ players Kadian Lecky and Nicolas Martinez were ejected from the bench – Lecky at 40 minutes and Martinez at 71 minutes for dissent, while Francisco Javier Juarez was also shown the red card at 83 minutes following two cautions. York Region Shooters remain in second place in the standings with a 14-4-2 record for 44 points and Toronto Croatia are in third place with 13-2-5 for 44 points.

Forward Adis Hasecic scored the first of the nine goals for SC Waterloo against St. Catharines Wolves at Warrior Field in Waterloo, the goal coming at just 2 minutes of play and this was followed by two goals from Harris Fazlagic at 12 and 17 minutes and a goal by Drazen Vukovic at 28 minutes for a 4-0 at the interval.

Vukovic struck again at 50 minutes, Hasecic at 55 minutes (16 goals for the season) and Vukovic (15 for the season) completed his hat-trick at 56 minutes. Defender Vladimir Zelenbaba completed the scoring with two goals at 64 minutes and 70 minutes and it was 9-0 at the final whistle. The 9-0 result is the highest score in the current CSL season.SC Waterloo now has a 10-7-4 record for 34 points and will end their regular season against York Region Shooters on October 2.

St. Catharines Wolves complete their season with a 7-15-0 record for 21 points.

BRAMPTON RETURNS TO WINNING FORM WITH 2-1 VICTORY….Astros Vasas held to 3-3 tie by Niagara United

Astros Vasas FC is still in the hunt for a playoff spot following a 3-3 tie against Niagara United, while Brampton City Utd returned to winning form with a last minute 2-1 victory at Windsor Stars, two games in the CSL First Division Saturday.

Forward Derek Paterson opened the scoring for Niagara United at Esther Shiner Stadium when he found the net past Astros Vasas goalkeeper Matthew George at the 5th minute mark, but Astros’ forward Eric Luptak tied the score 1-1 with a goal just three minutes later.

Niagara took the lead at 38 minutes on a goal by Andy Tiedt and it was 2-1 at the interval.

Midfielder Jose Melo struck for Astros Vasas at 68 minutes, his sixth goal of the season for a 2-2 tie and Evan James put the home side up 3-2 at 80 minutes when he headed in a free kick. It was James’ fourth goal of the campaign.

Niagara equalized at the 88th minute mark on a goal by Goran Roksandia, a 3-3 tie at the final whistle.

Astros Vasas now has a 6-11-4 WLT record for 22 points in eighth position in the standings and continue to be one of four teams bidding for the last playoff berth. Niagara United have a 3-15-4 record for 13 points.

Following a scoreless first half, forward Peter Niles put Brampton City Utd ahead at the 54th minute mark at Windsor Stadium, but Gino Berardi equalized for Windsor Stars when he found the net past Brampton goalkeeper Camilo Benzi four minutes later.

Striker Milos Scepanovic scored the winning goal from the penalty spot following a foul in the box, he drove the ball past Windsor goalkeeper Anthony Santilli at the 90th minute mark, 2-1 in favour of Brampton. It was the Brampton forward’s 16th goal of the season.

The win was Brampton City Utd’s first win in six games since August 30 and the Toronto area team has a 13-7-1 record for 40 points for 4th place in the standings,  Windsor Stars have a 8-9-3 record for 27 points.

There was one game in the CSL Second Division Saturday, with Kingston FC B defeating Serbian White Eagles B 3-2.

BURLINGTON DROPS SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES 2-1…result advances Windsor Stars, London City to playoffs.

Burlington SC kept their playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over Serbian White Eagles in the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Friday night, and the result is also important to Windsor Stars and London City as the two southwestern Ontario teams clinch a berth in the playoffs while on the sidelines.

All three goals were scored in the first half in an entertaining encounter at Nelson Stadium, with the first goal scored by Burlington’s  Milos Vucinic who found the at the 13th minute off a corner kick.

Midfielder Kiril Dimitrov equalized for Serbian White Eagles when he found the net past Burlington goalkeeper Vladimir Vujasinovic at 26 minutes and at the 45th minute mark, Vucinic struck again what turned out to be the winner.  The Burlington defender drove the ball past Serbian Eagles goalkeeper Scott Cliff after intercepting a pass in the penalty box for a 2-1 score at half-time and at the final whistle.

Three players were shown the red card by referee Arthur Korbiel. They are James Stamopoulos of Burlington SC and Nikola Negojevic of Serbian White Eagles following an altercation at 83 minutes, and defender Mario Gavran of Burlington after receiving a second caution just before the final whistle.

The Burlington win prevents Serbian White Eagles from picking up enough points to overhaul Windsor Stars and London City – these two teams have 27 points in the table, Serbian Eagles have two games remaining in the regular season and can only finish with a maximum 26 points if both games are won.

Seven teams now occupy playoff berths. They are Kingston FC, York Region Shooters, Toronto Croatia, Brampton City Utd, SC Waterloo, Windsor Stars and London City. Any one of four teams – St. Catharines Wolves, Astros Vasas FC, Burlington SC and Serbian White Eagles, can win the last playoff spot available.

The eight teams will play quarterfinal games Thanksgiving weekend, October 11 – 14, the semifinals will be played the following weekend with the CSL Championship Final on Sunday, November 3 at Niagara Falls. The CSL Championship will be preceded that day with the Second Division Championship.

SUSPENSE ABOUNDS IN CSL’s TOP DIVISION……..weekend games should bring clarity

Games being played in the CSL First Division this weekend should bring clarity to what is otherwise a big question mark on which team will win the league title and which teams will occupy the remaining three berths in the playoffs leading to the CSL Championship Final at Niagara Falls on November 3.
Suspense abounds at the top of the standings with Kingston FC, York Region Shooters and Toronto Croatia the three remaining candidates for the First Division title and this means a lot of interest in the Toronto Croatia vs. York Region Shooters clash set for 9 pm at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga on Sunday. Kingston are expecting to come away from Nelson Stadium and Burlington SC with three points in their game also on Sunday, an earlier 5 pm start.
There’s no lack of anticipation either in the upcoming post-season championship games with five teams having qualified for the First Division playoffs. Kingston FC, York Region Shooters, Toronto Croatia, Brampton City Utd and SC Waterloo are in, while of the remaining teams, London City will almost certainly be added as the weekend games unfold. But Windsor Stars, Astros Vasas FC and Serbian White Eagles have not yet been eliminated.
In the CSL Second Division, the following six reserve teams have qualified for the playoffs, with two teams still to be added: Niagara United B, London City B, Toronto Croatia B, St. Catharines Wolves B, Brampton City Utd B and SC Waterloo B.

LONDON CITY, WATERLOO SCORE MIDWEEK VICTORIES….another hat-trick for Vucemilovic-Grgic

London City improved its chances of a playoff berth with a deserved 4-2 defeat of Brampton City, while SC Waterloo, which has already secured a playoff spot, eased past Serbian White Eagles 2-1, two games in the CSL Wednesday night.
A highlight of the London victory at the Hellenic Centre in London was three goals by striker Marin Vucemilovic-Grgic, his second hat-trick in less than a month, having scored all three in a 3-2 victory over SC Waterloo on September 6.
Vucemilovic-Grgic opened the scoring for London with his first goal at nine minutes and Zvonko Bakula found the net past Brampton goalkeeper Camilo Benzi to make it 2-0 at the 18th minute mark.  Brampton reduced the lead with a goal from the penalty spot at 24 minutes when referee Arthur Kobiel ordered the kick following a foul in the box. Milos Scepanovic scored, his 15th of the season and it was 2-1 at the interval.
Vucemilovic Grgic struck his second at 48 minutes and his third to complete the hat-trick for a 4-1 London lead at 55minutes. The three goals gives Vucemilovic-Grgic 19 for the season.
Stephen Hall scored a late goal at 90 minutes for the visitors and it was 4-2 at the final whistle.
The game completes London’s regular season with an 8-11-3 WLT record for 27 points, but the southwestern Ontario club must wait the outcome of other games to find out if it has secured a playoff berth. 
Brampton have a 12-7-1 record for 37 points and will end the regular season in the top four.
Dado Hadrovic had SC Waterloo on the road to a win at Esther Shiner Stadium with a goal at the 25th minute mark and Serbian White Eagles suffered a second set-back when forward Sahjah Reid was shown the red card by referee Michael Anthony Izzo at 26 minutes. It was 1-0 at half-time.
Forward Ramon Bailey scored with a low drive from 30 yards to tie the game for Serbian Eagles at 54 minutes, but Ranko Golijanin struck the winner for Waterloo  when he found the net from 12 yards past Serbian Eagles goalkeeper Scott Cliff at the 70th  minute mark, a 2-1 final score in favour of the visitors.
Waterloo has played 20 games and is finishing its regular season strongly with a 9-7-4 record for 31 points and presently in fifth position in the standings, while Serbian White Eagles have a 6-11-2 record for 20 points in 10th position.

There will be two First Division games Wednesday, September 25 with the London City vs Brampton City Utd encounter postponed last Friday due to severe thunderstorms and lightning now re-scheduled for the Hellenic Centre in London, a 9 pm kickoff, and the Serbian White Eagles vs SC Waterloo clash has been relocated from Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke to Esther Shiner in North York with the same 9 pm kickoff time.

Kingston FC squeaked past York Region Shooters 2-1 but went four points clear at the top of the First Division, Toronto Croatia defeated Burlington 4-1, while Brampton City Utd were held to a 2-2 tie by Astros Vasas FC, three games in the CSL Sunday.

At the Invista Centre at Kingston, Catalin Lichioiu struck the opening goal for Kingston, heading in off a cross from Edgar Soglo and York Region’s Richard West tied the game 1-1 at 44 minutes.

CSL leading goalscorer Guillaume Surot scored the winner from the penalty spot at 86 minutes – his 26th of the campaign – called when Kingston captain Austin White was brought down in the penalty box from a corner kick and the game ended 2-1 in favour of Kingston.

Kingston now have a 15-3-2 WLT record for 47 points, four points clear of York Region Shooters and Toronto Croatia. The eastern Ontario club has two games remaining in the regular season, York Region Shooters and Toronto Croatia each have 3 games remaining.

Burlington SC led Toronto Croatia 1-0 in the first half on a goal by Nenad Nikolic who scored at 26 minutes, until Toronto Croatia defender Sven Arapovic equalized at 45 minutes in the game at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.

Josip Keran put the Toronto team 2-1 up at 47 minutes for a Toronto Croatia lead at the break and Arapovic made it 3-1 at the 56th minute mark.

Roberto Gallo increased the Toronto Croatia lead to 4-1 at 69 minutes, the score at the final whistle.

Toronto Croatia have a 13-2-4 record for 43 points, while Burlington are at 6-14-0 for 18 points.

Brampton City Utd took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Mirko Medic who headed into the net for a 1-0 lead over Astros Vasas after just one minute at Esther Shiner Stadium, but Austin Paul equalized for the home side six minutes later and the 1-1 score held to the interval.

David Guzman put Brampton into a 2-1 lead at 75 minutes, a screaming free kick from 35 yards, but Astros Vasas responded again when Evan James headed in a cross from Jose Melo to beat Brampton goalkeeper Camilo Benzi at the 87th minute mark, a 2-2 final score.

Brampton are in fourth place in the standings with a 12-6-1 record for 37 points, while Astros Vasas are at 6-11-3 for 21 points in ninth position.

There was one game played in the CSL Second Division, York Region Shooters B crushing  Kingston FC B 6-1. Brampton City B has clinched a playoff spot in the Second Division.

WATERLOO IN THE PLAYOFFS……defeat Niagara United while Windsor Stars triumph over St. Catharines

SC Waterloo clinched a playoff berth with a 2-0 away victory over Niagara United, while Windsor Stars defeated St. Catharines Wolves also by a 2-0 score, two games in the CSL First Division Saturday night.

Forward Ranko Golijanin opened the scoring for Waterloo at the Kalar Sports Park in Niagara Falls, he connected with a cross from the right wing to beat Niagara goalkeeper Brad Gemmell from close range for a 1-0 lead at the 14th minute mark.

Drazen Vukovic made it 2-0 at 24 minutes, his 12th goal of the season, it was 2-0 at the interval and the final whistle.

SC Waterloo improve to an 8-7-4 WLT record for 28 points to be the fifth team to secure a spot in the playoffs, alongside Kingston FC, York Region Shooters, Toronto Croatia – the defending CSL champions – and Brampton City United.

Stephen Ademolu opened the scoring at 30 minutes for Windsor Stars, a low shot to find the net past St. Catharines goalkeeper Matthew Greco and it was 1-0 at half-time.

Wade Allen made it 2-0 for Windsor at 62 minutes from a free kick just outside the box – his 4th goal of the season – and the score held to the final whistle.

Windsor Stars have an 8-8-3 record for 27 points and 6th in the standings, while St. Catharines Wolves are at 7-14-0 for 21 points in eighth position.

KINGSTON HELD TO 1-1 TIE BY SERBIAN EAGLES…..weather takes out London City vs Brampton

Kingston FC were held to a 1-1 tie by Serbian White Eagles in a well-played game in doubt until the final whistle at Esther Shiner Stadium, North York, the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Friday night. Another game scheduled, London City vs Brampton City Utd., was called off at the Hellenic Centre, London, due to thunderstorms and lightning.

Kingston were heavily favoured to land an additional three points in their bid for the CSL First Division title, but it was Serbian Eagles to strike first with a goal at 28 minutes by midfielder Djorjije Strunjas. He drove the ball low from inside the penalty box to catch the left side of the net out of reach of Kingston goalkeeper Jaroslav Tesar.

It was 1-0 at half-time.

Just three minutes into the second half striker Guillaume Surot equalized with a low shot from 25 yards to beat Serbian Eagles goalkeeper Scott Cliff. It was Surot’s 25th goal of the season and improved his already good chances of winning the First Division goalscoring title in the regular season which is due to end early October.

There were few opportunities for either side to catch a winner, although at 85 minutes Ramon Bailey came close in an attempt that was saved by Taser.

The game ended 1-1, giving Kingston a 14-3-2 WLT record for 44 points which is one-up over York Region Shooters at 83 points. Serbian White Eagles have a 7-10-1 record for 22 points in eighth place.
