AN IMPROVING SCARBOROUGH LOOK TO UPSET VORKUTA SUNDAY

 

Three teams, Vorkuta, Serbian White Eagles and York Region Shooters, fought a late season battle for First Division honors in 2017, a battle eventually won by Vorkuta with just two points separating the top three clubs. Scarborough finished a distant fourth.

It’s a different mix at the top now, with FC Ukraine United entering the picture and Scarborough looking more like a team determined to be a serious contender for at least one of the First Division and playoff championship titles. The top four all have exceptional defensive records of conceding less than a goal per game and while it’s early days to draw any conclusions or forecasts for season end, Scarborough’s Aleksander Stojiljkovic, the league’s top goal scorer in 2017, is leading the way yet again and likely to play an important role in the east Toronto side’s bid to gain a CSL title since entering the league in 2015.

Scarborough will be determined to upset at Birchmount Stadium this weekend, a home encounter with FC Vorkuta, the only undefeated side in the CSL’s top division.

Vorkuta entered the CSL in 2017 under the technical influence of Ukrainian-born Serhiy Zayets with playing experience going back to top Soviet soccer, including FC Dynamo Kyiv in the late eighties. The team has marched on impressively ever since and as one observer put it recently: ‘Who is going to stop them winning both the First Division and the Championship’.

Scarborough SC vs FC Vorkuta at Birchmount Stadium on Sunday will kickoff at 8 pm.

In other First Division games this weekend, Real Mississauga are at home on Friday to Hamilton City at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, an 8.30 pm start, CSC Mississauga will host FC Ukraine United at Iceland Field, that’s a 9 pm kickoff, and on Saturday, Serbian White Eagles travel to RIM Park in Waterloo for a clash with SC Waterloo, a 6.30 pm kickoff.

There is only one game in Second division is on  Sunday, Milton SC B are at home to FC Vorkuta B for a morning kickoff at the Milton Sports Centre, that’s  at 11.30 am.

FC Ukraine United inflicted a heavy 9-0 defeat on SC Waterloo and FC Vorkuta squeaked by Serbian White Eagles 1-0, two games in the Canadian Soccer League First Division Saturday.

Ukraine United forward Yevhen Falkovskyi and midfielder Pavlo Lukianets each scored a hat-trick, while Nazar Milishchuck struck twice and Vitalii Bohdanov found the net once to beat Waterloo goalkeeper Marko Jelic in a one-sided affair at RIM Park in Waterloo.

It was 4-0 at half-time.

FC Ukraine United improves its position in the standings with a 4-2-1WLT record, tied for second position with 13 points, while SC Waterloo now has a 1-4-0 record in seventh position.

Bogdan Riabets struck the lone winning goal for Vorkuta at 71 minutes following a tough and physical first half played in 32 degrees, steamy conditions at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York.

Riabets took a diagonal pass from Vadym Gostiev to drive the ball into the far corner from just inside the box.

The win was Vorkuta’s sixth of the season for a 6-0-1 record for 19 points. The 2017 season First Division winners remain unbeaten at the top of the standings.

It was the first defeat of the season for Serbian White Eagles, now with a 2-1-3 record for 9 points in fourth position in the table.

The CSL First Division resumes with four games during the weekend July 6-8.

Scarborough SC moved into second position in the CSL First Division standings with a 4-0 victory over CSC Mississauga in the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Friday.

Aleksander Stojiljkovic opened the scoring for the visitors at the at Iceland Field, Mississauga, his seventh of the season for a 1-0 lead at the 5 minute mark and this was followed by two goals by forward Kavin Bryan at 24 minutes and 43 minutes for a 3-0 Scarborough lead at the break.

Kiril Dimitrov completed the scoring, finding the net past Mississauga goalkeeper Faris Efendic at the 70 minute for a 4-0 score in favor of Scarborough.

Scarborough was reduced to eight men following the ejection of Kiril Dimitrov, Stefan Rudan and John Trye for various offences including a foul and dissent at the 80 minute mark.

Scarborough SC improve to a 4-2-1WLT record for 13 points and second in the standings, while CSL Mississauga have a 0-4-2 record for two points and eighth in the table.

There are two remaining CSL First Division games over the Canada Day weekend when FC Ukraine United travels for an encounter with SC Waterloo at RIM Park, Waterloo on Saturday, that’s a 6.30 pm evening kickoff, and at 7 pm the same evening, league-leading FC Vorkuta is at home to Serbian White Eagles at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York.

While CSC Mississauga have yet to open their account with a win in the CSL First Division, a close look at the expansion team’s games played to date shows four of the five games have conceded just 2 goals, one against a tough Serbian White Eagles on June 1 and one against a similarly strong Scarborough SC on June 24. Games against Real Mississauga and Brantford Galaxy ended scoreless.

In the other game against the Brantford Galaxy on June 9, CSC Mississauga went down, 3-0 for a total of just five goals allowed in the five games played so far this season.
CSC Mississauga opens the holiday weekend with a match against Scarborough SC on Friday night, not an easy proposition for the CSL’s most recent entry, but any team with an average one goal per game conceded suggests better things to come as the season moves along. Friday’s match is at the Iceland Field for a 9 pm kickoff.

There are two additional CSL First Division games over the coming long weekend, both on Saturday when FC Ukraine United travels for an encounter with SC Waterloo at RIM Park, Waterloo, that’s a 6.30 pm evening kickoff. And at 7 pm, league-leading FC Vorkuta hosts Serbian White Eagles at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York at 7, which means the top four teams in the CSL First Division table will be in action in an otherwise brief schedule during the first two days of the Canada Day holiday weekend.

The success of FC Ukraine United, presently second in the standings, with an impressive runner-up finish in the CSL First Division in its 2016 inaugural year followed by winning the Second Division in 2017, can be expected to continue, which makes for a good contest with SC Waterloo on Saturday when the Southwestern Ontario team will attempt to get back on track following three successive defeats during June.

FC Vorkuta vs Serbian White Eagles is a return match following the 1-1 draw on May 25 at Centennial Stadium, an entertaining affair which could have gone either way. These two teams are unbeaten and while Vorkuta has an impressive five victories in their six games played and 7 points up on Serbian Eagles, the outcome of Saturday’s clash is still unpredictable and the match at the Esther Shiner ground will be well worth watching.

Scarborough SC defeated CSC Mississauga by a 1-0 score at Birchmount Stadium in the only game played in the CSL First Division Sunday.
The game was a well played encounter, largely in the midfield with few scoring opportunities throughout.

Forward Kiril Dimitrov struck the winner for the home side, breaking through to face CSC Mississauga goalkeeper Faris Efendic in a one on one before slotting the ball into the net from 12 yards. The goal came at 60 minutes and was enough to give the east Toronto team the three points.
Mississauga had difficulty penetrating the Scarborough defence with John Trye in the Scarborough goal able to handle the few scoring opportunities that came his way.

Midfielder Odain Simpson was prominent for the home side.

The win gives Scarborough a 3-2-1WLT record for 10 points for a tie with second place FC Ukraine United in the standings, trailing league leaders FC Vorkuta by six points and one point ahead of now fourth place Serbian White Eagles.

CSC Mississauga, adjusting to their inaugural season in professional soccer, has a 0-3-2 record for two points in eighth position in the table.
The two teams meet again for their next game when CSC Mississauga hosts Scarborough next Friday, June 29, at the Iceland Field in Mississauga a 9 pm kickoff.

There was one game in the CSL Second Division Sunday when FC Vorkuta B defeated Halton United B, 3-1.

SATURDAY VICTORIES FOR UNBEATEN VORKUTA AND HAMILTON CITY

FC Vorkuta jumped six points in the lead with a 2-0 away victory over Brantford Galaxy and Hamilton City defeated SC Waterloo 4-2, two games in the Canadian Soccer League Saturday.

Vorkuta took the lead at 25 minutes when midfielder Iaroslav Solonynko took a pass from Oleh Kerchu to side-step the oncoming Brantford defender to then smash the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

The 1-0 Vorkuta lead held for the remainder of the game until at 90 minutes midfielder Valerii Haidarzhi secured the victory with a well-taken curling shot into the far corner of the net from 19 yards, a 2-0 Vorkuta lead and score at the final whistle.

Vorkuta jump six points into the lead in the CSL First Division as a result of the victory, to remain unbeaten with a 5-0-1WLT record for 16 points, six ahead of second place FC Ukraine United.

Brantford Galaxy now has a 1-3-1 record for 4 points and fifth in the table.

Midfielder Lucas Raposo opened the scoring for Hamilton City at 4 minutes and Vladimir Stankovic found the net past Hamilton City goalkeeper Stefan Avramovic to tie the score 1-1 at the 15th minute mark, the score at the break.

Sani Dey put Hamilton in front 2-1 at 65 minutes, but the lead held for just two minutes before the visitors’ Aleksander Mitic tied the game 2-2, the goal coming at the 67 minute mark.

Hamilton City then struck twice late in the second half, a goal at 74 minutes by defender Arsen Platis and at 80 minutes when Miroslav Cabrilo beat Waterloo goalkeeper Marko Jelic to complete the scoring, 4-2 in favor of Hamilton City.

Hamilton City improves to 2-3-0 for six points in fifth position, while SC Waterloo has a 1-3-0 record for three points in 7th position in the standings.

Scarborough SC hosts expansion team CSC Mississauga, an 8 pm kickoff, and in the CSL Second Division, FC Vorkuta B is at home to Halton United B at St. Roberts HS Field, a 2 pm start.

Serbian White Eagles maintained their unbeaten string, winning a 1-0 squeaker over FC Ukraine United in the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Friday night.

Defender Branislav Vukomanovic struck a picture goal three minutes into the second half following a well-played 45 minutes at Centennial Stadium, a first half that produced few opportunities to break the scoreless deadlock.

The goal from 35 yards which entered the net in the top right corner well out of the long reach of Ukraine United goalkeeper Andriy Bandrivskyy was described as a rare strike, particularly from the distance.

Forward Luka Bojic struck the right post with a drive at 88 minutes for Serbian Eagles and two minutes later midfielder Pavlo Lukianets of Ukraine United came close with a free kick from 20 meters with Serbian Eagles’ goalkeeper Goran Skaric beaten.
Forward Dusan Kovacevic and midfielder Milan Mitrovic were impressive for the home side, while Ukraine United’s Roman Datsiuk on the right wing was a constant threat for the visitors to the final whistle.

Serbian White Eagles have a high output of nine points in third position in the standings, an unbeaten 2-0-3WLT record achieved from finding the net just four times in the 5 games played to date. Only two goals have been conceded, the lowest in the CSL’s top division.

“While our defense is outstanding, we do need to be more effective on attack and the goals will come as forwards return from injuries. That did start tonight with the return of the very good Dusan Kovacevic,” said Serbian Eagles’ GM Dragan Bakoc.

UNBEATEN VORKUTA AND SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES STRONG AT THE TOP

As the CSL First Division enters its fifth week of the 2018 campaign, two  teams that were prominent at the top of the standings in 2017 – FC Vorkuta and Serbian White Eagles – are again bidding for the top division title, along with FC Ukraine United (runner-up in 2016) and Scarborough SC (in the top four the last two seasons).

With Vorkuta and Serbian Eagles the only teams  unbeaten at this still early stage of the season, it’s unlikely their prominence will diminish and there may well be a déjà vu at the top even though Ukraine United and Scarborough can be expected continue their strong challenge for First Division honors.

Vorkuta and Serbian White Eagles have strengthened their teams with additional signings, but Scarborough and Ukraine United are showing something extra upfront and are finding the net when needed. While things will probably change with the Eagles, their low output of just three goals scored in the four games played must be of concern and showed particularly in their last game, a 1-1 draw against Ukraine United on June 17.

These two teams meet again Friday at Centennial Stadium, a game that gives both teams an opportunity to pick-up an important three points in the close race at the top. It’s a 7 pm kickoff.

There are two games in the first Division Saturday, with Hamilton City at home to SC Waterloo, a 6.30 pm start at the Heritage Field and FC Vorkuta travels to that ground for a later game with Brantford Galaxy, an 8.30 kickoff.

There is one First Division match on Sunday, it’s at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough where Scarborough SC is at home to expansion team CSC Mississauga, a side looking for its opening win in the Canadian Soccer League. It’s an 8 pm kickoff.

Scarborough SC defeated Brantford Galaxy 3-0 and FC Ukraine United played to a 1-1 draw with Serbian White Eagles, two games in the Canadian Soccer League First Division Sunday night.

Forward Kavin Bryan opened the scoring for Scarborough at the 15th minute mark in the game at Birchmount Stadium, taking a pass from Alexander Stojiljkovic to find the net with a drive from 17 yards. It was 1-0 at halftime.

Stojiljkovic then scored two second half goals, increasing the Scarborough lead to 2-0 at 55 minutes, and the same player increased the lead to 3-0 at the 75 minute mark, a left foot drive that found the corner of the net.
It was 3-0 for the home side at the final whistle.

Scarborough now has an improved 2-2-1WLT record for 7 points and third in the standings, while Brantford Galaxy has a 1-2-1 record for 4 points in fifth position.

Luka Bojic gave Serbian White Eagles a first half lead before midfielder Ihor Malysh struck the equalizer for FC Ukraine United at the 37th minute mark. The score was 1-1 at halftime and held to the final whistle at Centennial Stadium in Toronto’s west end.
FC Ukraine United are in second position in the standings with a 3-1-1 record for 10 points and Serbian White Eagles have a 1-0-3 record with 6 points and hold fourth position in the table.

FC Vorkuta jumped into a four-point lead in the standings with a 3-1 defeat of SC Waterloo, the only game in the CSL First Division Saturday.
Vorkuta took the lead at 23 minutes at RIM Park, Waterloo, a goal by midfielder Iaroslav Solonynko who took a pass from Oleg Kerchu and with a powerful drive from the edge of the box found the net just inside the post and out of reach of Waterloo goalkeeper Marko Jelic.
Solonynko struck a second goal to give Vorkuta a 2-0 lead at 37 minutes. Striker Sergii Ivliev collected a long ball before finding Solonynko who drove the ball into the top corner of the net. It was 2-0 at the interval.

Ivliev increased the lead to 3-0 just three minutes into the second half, taking a pass from Oleksandr Volchkov and with only Jelic to beat in the Waterloo goal, the striker found the corner of the net.

Volchkov scored in his own net for an own goal to reduce the score to 3-1 following a miscue with Vorkuta goalkeeper Oleksandr Musiienko. A header intended as a pass back ended in the back of the net at the 65th minute mark. Waterloo came close to a second goal at 80 minutes but failed to score and it was 3-1 at the final whistle.

FC Vorkuta improved to a 4-0-1WLT record for 13 points and SC Waterloo have a 1-2-0 record for 3 points and sixth in the league table.
There was one game in the CSL Second Division on Saturday when Halton United B dominated Serbian White Eagles B by a 13-0 score.
There are two CSL First Division games Sunday with Scarborough SC at home to Brantford Galaxy, an 8 pm kickoff at Birchmount Stadium and this is followed by a late game Sunday night when FC Ukraine United host Serbian White Eagles at Centennial Stadium in Toronto’s west end, a 9 pm kickoff.
There is one CSL Second Division match Sunday when Brantford Galaxy B visits the Milton Sports Centre for a 10.30 am kickoff with Milton SC B.

MISSISSAUGA RIVALS BATTLE TO SCORELESS TIE FRIDAY

CSC Mississauga and Real Mississauga played to a scoreless tie in the only CSL First Division match played Friday.
It was an even, well played encounter, at times end to end, but attempts on both sides to break through usually broke down inside the penalty box and on occasion both goalkeepers – Faris Efendic for CSC Mississauga and Senad Poracanin for the visitors – were solid when the ball came their way.
Forward Pero Menalo and midfielder Jeison Steven Parra-Rengifo were prominent for CSC Mississauga throughout and Axcel Avogadro of that team had the best opportunity to find the net when his header went just wide of the right post from a corner kick at 40 minutes.
Miguel Angel Chavez-Vejar and Danilo Richards put in strong performances for Real Mississauga.
“We had most of the possession, but it was a tough game and our finishing was a little off at times when we failed to take advantage after creating opportunities to score,” said CSC Mississauga head coach Silvester Trograncic at the final whistle.
CSC Mississauga has a 0-2-2WLT record for 2 points, while Real Mississauga has a 0-1-1 for one point in the opening games of the 2018 campaign.

HIGH FLYING VORKUTA PLAYS RETURN MATCH WITH WATERLOO

Two Mississauga expansion teams will get the CSL First Division weekend schedule underway on Friday, with CSC Mississauga at home at the Iceland Field to play Real Mississauga, a 9 pm kickoff.

CSC Mississauga is a professional club that represents the Croatian community in Mississauga, while Real Mississauga is a community organization with strong coaching programs that introduce very young players to organized soccer and the introduction of advanced youth players to professional soccer in the Canadian Soccer League.

There is one game next day Saturday when league leaders FC Vorkuta travel to Southwestern Ontario for a game with SC Waterloo at RIM Park, a 6.30 pm start and the following day Sunday, Scarborough SC is at home to Brantford Galaxy, an 8 pm kickoff at Birchmount Stadium. This is followed by a late game Sunday night when FC Ukraine United are at home to Serbian White Eagles at Centennial Stadium, a 9 pm start.

FC Vorkuta, which leads the CSL First Division with 10 points and is unbeaten following the first four weeks of play in the new season, is repeating the strong performance of 2017 when the team that bears the name of a Russian community in the northern parts of that country finished on top of the standings in its inaugural CSL year.

Additional signings from that first campaign has further strengthened the squad, the most notable being forward Sergii Ivliev, who arrived in Canada in 2016 to play for FC Ukraine United in the CSL and was the First Division top scorer in his first year with 15 goals. At the end of his contract, Ivliev signed for FC Vorkuta and led his side with a hat-trick in the 6-1 victory over SC Waterloo on June 9, for which he was named Player of the Week in the CSL.

Ivliev, 33, has a long history of professional soccer going back to 2003 in his native Ukraine and later in Poland. He records a very high rate of scoring throughout his career.

Vorkuta GM and head coach Samad Kadirov had high praise for the veteran striker following the Player of the Week announcement:  “Sergii is one of the best signings in FC Vorkuta’s history. He was the team’s top scorer last year and is tied (with Serhill Ursulenko) in goals this year. He’s a very humble guy with fantastic ball feeling, has a talent of being in exact spot on the field wherever the ball goes.” he said.

Three goals by FC Vorkuta forward Sergii Ivliev led his team to a 6-1 victory over SC Waterloo for top position in the standings, FC Ukraine United defeated Hamilton City 3-1 and Brantford Galaxy scored three second half goals for a 3-0 win over CSC Mississauga, three games in the Canadian Soccer League Saturday night.

FC Ukraine United’s Ivan Kucherenko opened the scoring against Hamilton City  at the Heritage Field in Hamilton, finding the net past goalkeeper Stefan Avramovic at the 41 minute mark for a 1-0 lead at the interval.

Vukasin Kovacevic  leveled the score 1-1 for Hamilton at 75 minutes and Ukraine regained the lead on a goal by Ihor Malysh six minutes later.

Ukraine’s Vasyl Chornyi was ejected following a second caution midway through the second half, but Ukraine United went further ahead for a 3-1 lead at the 91 minute, a goal by Nazar Milishchuk and the score held to the final whistle.

FC Ukraine United improve to a 3-1-0 WLT record for 9 points and second in the First Division table, while Hamilton City suffered its third defeat for a 1-3-0 record for 3 points and 7 in the standings.

Midfielder Slavko Knezevic caught the corner of the net from 10 yards to open the scoring for Brantford Galaxy at the 63 minute following a well-played, scoreless first half against visiting CSC Mississauga.

Adam Villella took a long pass from Miljan Milovic to make it 2-0 for the Galaxy at 68 minutes, and at the 82 minute mark Bojan Stepanovic moved the ball to forward Sasa Jelovac for a third goal for the home side and it was 3-0 at the final whistle.

It was Brantford Galaxy’s first victory of the new season for a 1-1-1 record for 4 points in fourth position in the standings, while new club CSC Mississauga has a 0-2-1 record for one point in eighth position.

Sergei Ivliev took a pass from Ihor Melnyk to open the scoring at 13 minutes for FC Vorkuta against SC Waterloo at the OSA Soccer Centre Stadium in Vaughan,   and Ivliev struck a second goal at 30 minutes following a cross by midfielder Serhii Ursulenko, 2-0 for the home side.

A low cross from defender Volodymyr Bidlovskyi found Melnyk who scored the third Vorkuta goal, tapping in from three yards at the 37 minute mark and four minutes later midfielder Mykhailo Riabyi took a pass from Ivliev to find the right corner of the Waterloo net with a drive from the edge of the 18 yard line for a 4-0 Vorkuta lead, the score at the break.

Ursulenko tapped the ball into an empty net at 58 minutes after taking a low pass from Oleksandr Yaremchuk to make the score 5-0, and two minutes later SC Waterloo reduced the lead to 5-1 on a counter attack, a goal by Ivan Cutura who beat Vorkuta goalkeeper Aleksandr Musiienko on a one and one before placing the ball into the corner of the net.

Ivliev completed his hat-trick at 68 minutes, a 6-1 final score for FC Vorkuta.

FC Vorkuta gained its third victory with a 3-0-1 record for 10 points at the top of the table, while SC Waterloo has a 1-1-0 record for three points in sixth position in the table.

There are two Second Division games on Sunday with FC Vorkuta B at home to Milton SC B at St. Roberts HS, that’s a 2 pm kickoff, and Scarborough B are at home to Brantford Galaxy B, a 6 pm kickoff at the OSA Soccer Center Stadium.

SCARBOROUGH HOLD SERBIAN EAGLES TO SCORELESS TIE FRIDAY

 

 

Serbian White Eagles were held to a scoreless tie in a close contest with visiting Scarborough SC, the only CSL First Division game played Friday.

Serbian Eagles had most of the early play and several scoring chances at Centennial Stadium in west Toronto, but following the interval both White Eagles and Scarborough almost went ahead with close calls.

Forward Luka Bojic’s shot struck the crossbar from 15 yards at 65 minutes with Scarborough goalkeeper John Trye well beaten and Zoran Rajovic’s long shot for Scarborough at 81 minutes struck the crossbar angle and  it was 0-0 at the final whistle.

Serbian White Eagles are third in the First Division table with a 1-0-2 WLT record and 5 points, while Scarborough is in fourth position with a 1-2-1 record for 4 points.

There are three First Division games in the CSL First Division on Saturday when FC Ukraine United visit Heritage Field for a game with Hamilton City at 6.30 pm , followed by a game at the OSA Soccer Centre in Vaughan where FC Vorkuta are at home to Waterloo SC at 8, and it’s Brantford Galaxy vs CSC Mississauga at the Heritage Field, an 8.30 pm start.
