SC TORONTO MARCHES ON AT THE TOP – Capital City FC wins while Montreal vs Serbian Eagles tie.

SC Toronto widened the gap at the top of the First Division with a 2-1 victory over Mississauga Eagles while Capital City FC defeated London City 5-1 and Montreal Impact Academy were held to a 2-2 tie by Serbian White Eagles, three games in the CSL Friday night.

SC Toronto made it clear they are going to be tough to dislodge from the top of the First Division after taking all three points in the game with Mississauga Eagles played at Lamport Stadium in Toronto’s west end.

The Toronto side took the lead during a close, well played first half and it was forward Andrea Lombardo who found the net at the 18th minute when he picked up a well placed through ball to the right of the Mississauga goal and carefully slotted it just inside the far post.

Mississauga Eagles’ forward Shawn Brown scored the equalizer at the 25th minute mark when he drove the ball into the net from close range past Scott Cliff in the SC Toronto goal. It was 1-1 at half-time.

SC Toronto defender Gerard Ladiyou scored the winner for the home side, the goal coming off a corner kick at the 61 minute mark.

Both sides had opportunities to score in the latter stages, but none more than Mississauga’s Dave Simpson who volleyed the ball over the crossbar with only the goalkeeper to best from 8 yards. It was 2-1 at the final whistle.

Capital City FC continued their impressive bid for First Division honours and they took the lead at the 26th minute mark at Cove Road in London, a goal by forward Junior Ellis who found the net from 6 yards.

Akil DeFreitas made it 2-0 for the visitors when he scored from the penalty spot at 30 minutes, Kenny Caceros increased the lead to 3-0 four minutes later and midfielder Collin Harrison scored a fourth for the Ottawa team, a 4-0 score at the break.

Capital City forward Garrett Webb increased the lead to 5-0 at 46 minutes and Younan Samra struck from the penalty spot for a London City goal at 64 minutes, a 5-1 final score.

Montreal Impact Academy is a top contender for league honours and they played to a 2-2 with Serbian White Eagles who are on the fringes and need points for a higher placing.

Montreal took the lead on a goal by midfielder Wandrille Lefevre who found the net after 10 minutes, but Serbian Eagles’ forward Alex Braletic tied the game 1-1 at 38 minutes following some good play by Milos Scepanovic.

Braletic put his side into a 2-1 lead with a goal at 50 minutes, his seventh of the season, and following missed opportunities by the home side, Montreal Impact Academy tied the game on a goal by defender Maxim Tissot at 67 minutes and the game ended 2-2.

VUKOVIC LIFTS TFC ACADEMY TO 5-1 VICTORY AT ST. CATHARINES

Two goals by the CSL First Division leading scorer Stefan Vukovic played an important part in lifting TFC Academy to a 5-1 victory over St. Catharines Wolves in the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Wednesday night.

Following a well-played scoreless first half, Vukovic opened the scoring at the 49th minute mark and TFC midfielder Sergio Camargo made in 2-0 seven minutes later

Vukovic increased the lead to 3-0 at 61 minutes and Dimitri Omphroy scored a TFC Academy goal at the 69th minute mark, deflecting a free kick past St. Catharines goalkeeper James Draper for a 4-0 lead.

The goals for Vukovic were his 11th and 12th of the season.

Academy defender Joshua Gross scored a fifth goal for the visitors at 85 minutes, a 5-0 score and Gross put the ball past his own goalkeeper, Angelo Cavelluzzo, to score an OG for St. Catharines and it was 5-1 at the final whistle.

The win gave TFC Academy their fourth win of the season for an improved 4-9-1 WLT record for 13 points, while St. Catharines have a 3-8-2 record for 11 points.

SC TORONTO, YORK REGION SHOOTERS SCORE DECISIVE VICTORIES SATURDAY

SC Toronto gave themselves a real confidence booster with an emphatic 4-0 defeat of league-leading Montreal Impact Academy in Montreal, while York Region Shooters kept pace in the standings by dismissing Windsor Stars 4-1, two games in the CSL Saturday.

Midfielder Carlos Nogueira opened the scoring at the 5th minute mark for SC Toronto for a 1-0 score at half-time at the Marie Victorin ground and Alexandros Halis beat Montreal goalkeeper Dom Provost to make it 2-0 at 61 minutes.

Jarek Whiteman struck twice for the visitors, his first at 78 minutes for a 3-0 Toronto lead, then again 10 minutes later to make it 4-0, the final score.

SC Toronto completed the double on Montreal Impact Academy following a 2-0 early season win in Toronto on May 13.

The Toronto team has the most productive record of all 14 teams in the CSL First Division with nine wins from 11 games played. They suffered just one defeat, a narrow 1-0 loss to Toronto Croatia on June 10. SC Toronto now has five games in hand over the two top teams in the league, Montreal and York Region Shooters, both having played 16 games.

York Region Shooters recovered from an early 1-0 deficit in their home encounter with Windsor Stars at the St. Joan of Arc ground in Maple and went on to score four goals for the 4-1 victory.

Striker Aaron Byrd put the border team 1-up at 11 minutes and the lead held until York Region’s Jason De Thomasis equalized at 39 minutes with a drive from 25 yards.

Midfielder Dino Gardener put the Shooters 2-1 in the lead at 62 minutes and Des Humphrey increased the lead to 3-1 seven minute later with a volley from 18 yards.

VICIKNEZ SIZZLER SINKS ASTROS

A late goal gave Serbian White Eagles a 1-0 victory over the hapless North York Astros in the only game played in the CSL Friday night, while at London the game with Windsor Stars was postponed due to the condition of the playing surface at Cove Road following heavy rain the previous night.

The patented free kick for which Serbian Eagles forward Sasa Viciknez has become known – from just outside the penalty box and a little to the side – was the highlight of an entertaining tussle between the home side attempting to recover from two losses the previous weekend at Montreal and Ottawa and the Astros still bidding for their opening win of the season.

While Serbian Eagles had more opportunities to put the ball in the net, Astros played well enough for periods during which it was difficult to comprehend  the North York side had failed to win in 12 attempts since starting the campaign so promisingly with an impressive 2-2 away tie in their opener on May 21.

Heading for another tie, the Astros suffered that sinking feeling yet again shortly after their defender Diego Benzi upended Viciknez just outside the box and referee Facchini gave the free kick and a yellow card to Benzi.

Viciknez, at one time a top flight player in Europe, struck a sizzling left footer into the roof of the net well out of reach of Astros’ goalkeeper Enea Perego and that goal proved to be the winner at the 78th minute mark.

Serbian Eagles had a goal disallowed during the first half and late in the game Benzi received a second yellow card for using his hand on the ball while going up for a header and was dismissed.

One other game scheduled for Friday night, the London City vs. Windsor Stars southwestern Ontario derby, was postponed due to ground conditions and will be rescheduled and a Second Division game between London City B and Brantford Galaxy B, was also called off.

Remaining games to be played the holiday weekend are:

MONTREAL IMPACT ACADEMY JUMP FOUR POINTS AHEAD

Montreal Impact Academy went four points ahead at the top of the First Division standings with a 3-0 victory over Serbian White Eagles at the Saputo Stadium in Montreal Saturday.

Academy midfielder Chris-Michel Rumuri opened the scoring with a goal at the 16th minute mark for a 1-0 lead at the interval and Michelot Hyacinthe made it 2-0 at 47 minutes.

Serbian Eagles fought to get back into the game during the second half but gave up a penalty kick at 80 minutes for Felix Cardin to find the net past Eagles’ goalkeeper Milos Djurkovic. The 3-0 score held to the final whistle.

Montreal jumps four points ahead of York Region Shooters with 26 points, close behind are SC Toronto and Capital City FC, each with 25 points. SC Toronto has five games in hand over Montreal and four games in hand over York Region Shooters.

SC TORONTO KEEPS UP BID FOR FIRST DIVISION TITLE, WINDSOR STARS SPARKLE WITH 4-0 VICTORY, WHILE CROATIA VS BRAMPTON AND LONDON VS BRANTFORD FINISH IN TIES

SC Toronto continued their bid for the First Division title win with a late winner against TFC Academy, Windsor Stars sparkled 4-0 at Club Roma in St. Catharines, Croatia and Brampton battled to a 2-2 tie and Brantford rescued their game with a late goal for a 1-1 result at London, games played in the CSL Friday.

SC Toronto enjoyed an edge in play at Lamport Stadium, outshooting TFC Academy 11-2 in the first half, but the scoreless first half continued well into the second half until the TFC defence failed to clear their lines twice inside the box at 89 minutes.

Forward Massimo Mirabelli picked up the loose ball and with a left foot drive caught the top left corner of the next for a 1-0 lead, which held to the final whistle.

Referee Manuel Orellana dismissed SC Toronto player Domenic Roberts for Violent Conduct in added time.

It was SC Toronto’s eighth victory of the campaign and now tied for third position in the standings with 25 points, but with games in hand over the top clubs also bidding for the title.

Windsor Stars sparkled at Club Roma with their decisive 4-0 victory over St. Catharines Wolves. Forward Robert Malbasic struck two goals, the first to open the scoring at nine minutes and the second to finish the scoring at 68 minutes.

Windsor’s other goals were scored at 56 minutes by midfielder Christian Mayorga and at 63 minutes by Christian Dragoi.

Toronto Croatia scored late to tie the game with Brampton City Utd at

Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, a goal at 84 minutes by midfielder Alex Arbelo..

Marin Vucemilovic-Grgic opened the scoring  for the home side at three minutes and Richard West tied the game for Brampton at 42 minutes, a 1-1 score at the interval.

Brampton’s Judah Hernandez struck a 25 yard volley to put his side in the

lead at 48 minutes before Arbelo scored the equalizer.

Brampton lost defender Danny Velastegui who was sent off by referee

Richard Oliveira at 92 minutes.

London City were heading for a narrow 1-0 win until Brantford tied the

game at 88 minutes at Cove Road in London.

Following some early pressure by the home side, London went ahead

at 14 minutes, a goal by forward Younan Samra who held back to avoid

being offside, then collected the ball to drive into the net, a 1-0 at half-time.

Although London hit the post, Brantford looked stronger in the second half,

and missed two chances to equalize before forward Mark Reilly found the

bottom left hand corner of the net to make it 1-1, the final score.

SCORELESS TIE GIVES CAPITAL CITY 11 UNDEFEATED WHILE GALAXY SCORE FIVE IN 30 MINUTES TO DEFEAT ST. CATHARINES WOLVES

Capital City FC  stretched their unbeaten string to 11 games with a scoreless tie against York Region Shooters, while in one other game played in the CSL Sunday, seven goals were scored in the second half when Brantford Galaxy defeated St. Catharines Wolves, 5-3. A third game, Toronto Croatia vs. TFC Academy was postponed at the ground.

It was an even, well-played contest between two teams bidding for the top position in the standings, but a temperature of 36 degrees at ground level may have played a part in a limp performance by both sides in front of goal at the St. Joan of Arc ground in Maple.

The scoreless tie between York Region Shooters and Capital City means the Shooters trail league-leading Montreal Impact Academy by one point and the Ottawa team is one point behind York Region. Capital City FC, with 12 games played, have two games in hand over the top two.

It was a contrast at Lions Park in Brantford where the Galaxy scored five goals in the last 30 minutes of play to defeat St. Catharines.

St. Catharines forward Aaron Vanvelzen opened the scoring with a goal at 29 minutes, he found the net past Galaxy goalkeeper Vladimir Markotic from 15 yards for a 1-0 score at half-time.

The Garden City side went ahead 2-0 at 50 minutes on a goal by Matthew Cain, but Brantford reduced the lead at the 63rd minute mark when Dalibor Mitrovic collected a clearance from his goalkeeper Markotic to score from 25 yards.

Brantford forward Ranko Golijanin evened the score at 2-2 just three minutes later and at 73 minutes referee Sylviu Petrescu pointed to the penalty spot when Golijanin was tripped in the box and Rade Novkovic found the net past Wolves’ goalkeeper Claudio Perri, a 3-2 Brantford lead.

Brantford’s Mitrovic scored his second goal when he picked up a rebound from an attempt by Nenad Begovic for a 4-2 score at 75 minutes.

St. Catharines struck their third goal at 88 minutes by midfielder Nicks Kinsi to make it 4-3 in favour of the home side and Brantford went further ahead on a goal by Stefan Dancetovic for a 5-3 score at the final whistle.

One other game scheduled for Sunday afternoon, Toronto Croatia vs. TFC Academy, was postponed and will be rescheduled.

CAPITAL CITY FC MARCH ON WITH 10 GAMES UNBEATEN WHILE MONTREAL IMPACT ACADEMY CRASH 4-0 AT BRAMPTON

Capital City FC kept up their unbeaten streak which now stands at 10 games following a cliffhanger 2-2 tie with Windsor Stars, while Montreal Impact Academy crashed 4-0 at Brampton to bring their 10-game unbeaten streak to an abrupt end, the only two games in the CSL First Division Saturday.

The Capital City result was in doubt until the dying seconds following a game in which the Ottawa team had most of the play and most of the chances in a well-played game at Windsor Stadium.

Capital City opened the scoring on a goal by midfielder Emir Zrnic who headed home past Windsor ‘ keeper Anthony Santilli at 12 minutes.

Capital City missed an opportunity to increase their lead when at 20 minutes Sullivan Silva missed a penalty, the shot saved by goalkeeper Santilli. Junior Ellis also had a chance to score for Capital City, but Santilli made the save.

Windsor equalized at 44 minutes when forward Aaron Byrd found the net and the 1-1 tie was the score at the break.

Windsor went ahead against the run of play at 82 minutes on a goal by midfielder Danny Dragoi, Windsor Stars 2, Capital City 1

At 91 minutes and close to the final whistle, Capital City FC were awarded a corner kick and goalkeeper Clinton Irwin joined his attackers in an attempt to score an equalizer. The move paid off as Irwin’s diving header from 10 yards flew into the home net to make the score 2-2 and that was the score at the final whistle.

Montreal Impact Academy’s 10-game unbeaten run ended at Victoria Park in Brampton where the Quebec side ran into a buzz saw Brampton City Utd  for a 4-0 result which means the league-leading team ended its swing into Ontario with just one point following the 1-1 tie with London City Friday night.

Following a scoreless first half, Richard West opened the scoring for Brampton at

49 minutes and this was followed by the first of two goals by midfielder Andy Garcia who put the home side two-up at 74 minutes.

Brampton defender Denny Velastegui increased the lead to 3-0 at 86 minutes and Garcia drove a free kick into the top corner of the net from 20 yards to score his second in the dying minutes and the game ended 4-0.

Brampton City Utd lost forward Daniel Nascimento on being shown the red card at 72 minutes and referee Justin Tasev ordered Brampton coach Armando Costa out of the game for dissent minutes later.

BRALETIC HAT-TRICK IN SERBIAN EAGLES ROMP WHILE ASTROS TIE WITH TFC AND MONTREAL HELD BY LONDON

Last minute goals can be cruel when you are sitting at the bottom of the standings searching for the first win and never was that more demonstrated than with North York Astros in a 1-1 tie with TFC Academy in CSL action Friday night.

London City held First Division leaders Montreal Impact Academy to the same 1-1 score and in one other game, a hat-trick by Alex Braletic helped his Serbian White Eagles to a 7-1 trouncing of St. Catharines Wolves, three games in the CSL.

Braletic opened the scoring for Serbian Eagles at the 5th minute mark at Centennial Stadium, he struck his second at 40 minutes and completed the hat-trick just after the interval.

St. Catharines Wolves’ player-coach Carlo Arghittu scored the lone goal for the visitors at 65 minutes after coming on as a substitute.

It was a crushing blow for North York Astros at Lamport Stadium when after leading 1-0 for most of the game following a gritty and determined effort to win their first game of the campaign, TFC Academy tied the score with just seconds remaining. The tying goal came from a thumping header inside the box by league-leading scorer Stefan Vukovic, his 10th goal of the season.

The Astros opened the scoring, a goal by forward Nordo Gooden at 24 minutes for a 1-0 lead at half-time. Both sides came close to scoring as the game moved through the second half and there were spectacular saves by North York goalkeeper Enea Perego who helped maintain the lead until Vukovic’s goal in the 94th minute.

London City suffered a similar fate on their home ground at Cove Road when after leading 1-0  against the league leaders Montreal Impact Academy on a goal at 52 minutes by Michael Marcoccia. The goal came  followed a  scoreless first half  during which London’s Younan Samra drove a shot on the underside of the crossbar at 39 minutes, but the ball stayed out.

Montreal tied the score in added time on a goal by midfielder Bastien Bourgault to give the league-leading Montreal Impact Academy an extended 10-game unbeaten streak  and a 2-point lead over second place York Region Shooters in the standings.
