Toronto Croatia, the most decorated club in the CSL with championship victories 1970 through 73, 2004, 2007, 2011 and 2012, will be playing out of the Hershey Centre in Mississauga while Etobicoke’s Centennial Stadium undergoes renovation for the Pan American games. The First Division team’s home opener will be on Saturday, May 24.
While the Toronto Croatia first team was notably absent from the championship final following a third-place league finish, the reserve squad made an outstanding return to competition to finish on top of the Second Division, to then reach the final of the Second Division Championship. Igor Beram, the second squad GM credited with putting together the winning combination in 2013, is opening the door to players looking for a first entry step into professional soccer. Players are invited to send a curriculum vitae to torontocroatiareserves@live.ca and those who qualify will be invited to a trial at the Hershey Dome Field, Mississauga, on Friday, March 21 from 9 – 11 pm.

Similarly, North York Astros are inviting players to make application for a trial through the club’s website at www.northyorkastros.ca. The team’s home opener will be played on May 25 at Esther Shiner Stadium.

The Canadian Soccer League continues to encourage players considering entry into semi-professional soccer to contact their nearest CSL club.

TORONTO CROATIA – A GREAT CROATIAN (AND CANADIAN) STORY…. Premiere showing of documentary Jan 17

slider_img2When Joe Pavicic became president of Toronto Croatia of the Canadian Soccer League in 2006, he did so with the knowledge that it would be necessary to uphold the reputation of a club with a proud and storied history after having celebrated 50 years in Canadian professional soccer.

The club was and continues to be high profile by virtue of an impressive chronology of championship victories in Canada and in recent years, internationally. The first sign of success came with consecutive title wins as a member of the National Soccer League during the years 1970 – 73 and this was followed by the memorable North American Championship victory as Toronto Metros-Croatia in 1976.

The Canadian International Soccer League (Puma League) titles followed in 1995 and 1996, then multiple wins in the Croatian National Soccer Federation of Canada and the United States tournament, to be followed by an unbeaten record in the more recent Croatian World Club Championship.
Toronto Croatia and Championships have become synonymous in Canadian soccer and the Mississauga-based club is now firmly entrenched in Canadian soccer history, to be shown in a documentary film produced by Pavicic with its premiere screening on January 17.

“It is true we have won a lot of trophies in the Canadian Soccer League over the years and have a great record overseas, but the one I am most proud of is the North American title as Metros-Croatia in ’76. I recognize it for two reasons, firstly it was really something to win the North American Championship in the 70s, but most importantly it demonstrated how two groups from different parts of the world involved in this great game can come together to achieve a high level of success,” said Pavicic.

A lot of great players have worn the distinctive Croatia mark on the jersey, with Portuguese legend, the late Eusebio, top scorer in the 1966 World Cup, topping the list. While playing two seasons for Toronto Croatia in 1975/76, Eusebio, who is often rated with Pele and Diego Maradona in world soccer, scored 18 goals in 25 games.

Others who played for Toronto Metros-Croatia to became prominent in the North American Soccer League were Bob Iarusci, Carmen Marcantonio, Bruno Pilas, Ivair Ferreira, Damir Sutevski, Ted Polak, Mladen Cukon, Zeljko Bilecki and Peter Roe, to name just a few.

Several players have crossed the Atlantic from Europe to play for Toronto Croatia, including Ivan Simic (from Gosk Jug Dubrovnik), Goran Pavlic (Iskra Bugojono), Josip Lukacevic (Osijek), Robert Rupcic (Rijeka) and Mate Stanic (Vinkovci) and in recent times a number of local players who have excelled for the club include Domagoj Sain, George Azcurra, Peter Curic, Leo Laurito, Edin Kalic, Leo Marasovic, Ivan Grnja, Marijan Bradvic, Drago Vabec, Ivan Lukacevic, Tom Granic, Josip Keran, Tihomir Maletic and Velimir Crljen. Crljen has also made his mark as player-coach and is currently head coach.

WATERLOO IN CSL CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL…..advance on penalty kicks over defending champions Toronto Croatia

SC Waterloo advanced to the CSL Championship Final with a penalty kicks victory over Toronto Croatia following an extra time 1-1 tie at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke Saturday night. Toronto Croatia won the championship in 2012.

It was a well-played encounter throughout the 90 minutes plus 30 minutes of extra time before Drazen Vukovic chipped the winning penalty down the middle and just under the bar to give Waterloo a 5-4 edge in kicks from the spot.

It was Vukovic who scored Waterloo’s opening goal at 54 minutes following a scoreless first half, the veteran forward driving a free kick from just outside the box past Toronto Croatia goalkeeper Antonio Ilic for the 1-0 lead.

Toronto Croatia equalized with a well-taken goal by Hayden Fitzwilliams who connected while closing in with pace to the right of the Waterloo goal to slot the ball just inside the post well out of reach of Waterloo goalkeeper Imad Hakura.

Toronto Croatia missed the first penalty, with all remaining spot kicks finding the net and the last one, taken by Vukovic, winning the game.
SC Waterloo, a side which gained in strength as the regular season games progressed and attracted attention particularly when scoring 18 goals without conceding one in the three games prior to Saturday’s victory, will meet the winner of the Kingston FC vs. London City semifinal being played Sunday.

In Saturday’s Second Division Championship semifinals, Toronto Croatia B defeated York Region Shooters B 2-0 at the Hershey Field in Mississauga on first half goals by forward Josip Stanic and midfielder Peter Vidovic, while at the Terry Fox Stadium in Brampton, SC Waterloo B scored four second half goals to defeat Brampton City Utd 5-1. Scorers were Mohamed Diaby for Brampton, while Ed Syllie struck twice for SC Waterloo, Stefan Brisevac, Mohamed Aborig and Erwin Uzunovic each scored singles.

TORONTO CROATIA’S STORIED PAST HARD TO OVERLOOK …….the weekend games

– SC Waterloo will be mindful of Toronto Croatia’s reputation for success since the team was founded back in 1956 when a small ethnic group eventually became known throughout Canada, North America and overseas.
There were modest successes in the early days of the National Soccer League – a forerunner league of the CSL – but the blockbuster achievement came 20 years later when Toronto Metros-Croatia won the North American championship in 1976.
In 2007, the club won the inaugural Croatian World Club Championship and has won the CSL Championship three times since. In 2012, Toronto Croatia won the First Division and the CSL Championship.
But the semifinal opposition from Waterloo Region has shown maturity and has been bold in an approach to put its stamp on the CSL First Division with a strong showing mid-season followed by late season victories 9-0 over St. Catharines Wolves and 5-0 York Region Shooters. Last weekend it was a 4-0 result that devastated Brampton City Utd in the championship quarterfinals to earn Waterloo a spot in the last four.
Like Toronto Croatia, Kingston FC has a good story to tell, but from entirely contrasting circumstances. The team that represents a city in the heart of the Thousand Islands chain is the proverbial new kid on the block in the CSL. Some kid.
Kingston took charge at the top of the CSL First Division with an opening win on May 6 and except for a slight dip on a couple of occasions has generally owned the lead position throughout. The team’s performance fooled the pundits who saw the eastern Ontario entry as a fresh team with a few university players that will struggle to find its feet in the tough, quick-paced semi-pro loop.
Kingston FC won the 12-team CSL First Division by a clear three points, scored the most goals with 69 –that’s 17 more than the next team – all due in part to fielding a strong side of mostly young local and international prospects destined for higher level professional soccer. Add a head coach raised in a strong culture that is Irish soccer and a club led by two outstanding leaders now in the twilight of their respective life careers and the results became almost inevitable.
But London City, the opposition in the semifinal match with Kingston, will not give much thought to the regular season when they take the field on Sunday evening. The side from southwestern Ontario will be focused on the prospect of carrying back the trophy to London for the first time since 1985. TORONTO CROATIA ADVANCE TO SEMIS……Whiteman strikes two in game marred by extra time ejections

Toronto-CroatiaTwo goals in extra time by Jarek Whiteman gave Toronto Croatia a 2-0 victory over Windsor Stars in the quarterfinals of the CSL Championship series, the only First Division playoff game played Saturday.

The two teams fought through a scoreless 90 minutes at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, then 10 minutes of extra time before Whiteman beat Windsor goalkeeper Anthony Santilli with a drive from 22 yards. Whiteman then followed up with a goal six minutes later at 106 minutes after taking a pass from forward Tihomir Maletic he moved the ball to the right side of Santilli into the net.

Immediately following the 2-0 lead, Windsor’s Michael Chiandussi was given a second caution then shown a red card by referee Michael Anthoy Izzo and this was followed by four additional players being ejected, two from the visitors and two from Toronto Croatia, all following some rough play and an altercation involving several players.

Red cards were shown to Stephen Ademolu for Serious Foul Play and Erik Cirovski for Violent Conduct both of Windsor Stars and this was followed by red cards shown to Whiteman and Maletic of Toronto Croatia – both for Violent Conduct. The game ended 2-0 in favour of Toronto Croatia and the current CSL champions now advance to the semifinals set for the weekend October 18 – 20.

TORONTO CROATIA ENDS SEASON WITH UNCERTAINTY……but Toronto Croatia reserves capture Second Division title

Toronto Croatia completed its regular season with a 2-0 victory over Brampton City Utd at Centennial Stadium Saturday, but will have to wait until the following day to know the team’s final position in the First Division standings.

Last season’s CSL champions will end up in second or third position, depending on the outcome of the York Region Shooters vs Kingston FC encounter Sunday afternoon. York Region will need a win to finish in the runner-up position, anything less will assure Toronto Croatia of second spot.

Jarek Whiteman scored both goals for the home side, opening the scoring after 15 minutes when he beat Brampton goalkeeper Euloge Awitor Kodzo with a solo effort after collecting the ball from outside the box and moving in to score. It was 1-0 at the break.

Whitman’s second goal came from a left foot drive from 15 yards into the top left corner and the game ended 2-0. The two goals were Whiteman’s 4th and 5th of the season

KINGSTON FC WINS CSL FIRST DIVISION…..York Region, Toronto Croatia go down to defeat Wednesday

The two teams battling for the top positions in the CSL First Division went down to defeat in the only two games played in the CSL Wednesday. A resounding 5-0 victory by SC Waterloo over second place York Region Shooters and a 1-0 triumph for Serbian White Eagles over third place defending CSL champions Toronto Croatia, confirmed Kingston FC as winners of the First Division title

Kingston wins the CSL First Division with one game remaining in the regular season. The new-look eastern Ontario side has captured the CSL’s top division in just its second year following a 14th position of 16 teams in the league standings in its inaugural 2012 year. But under new management and a new head coach the club has been relentless in its pursuit of honours from kickoff in May throughout the 2013 campaign.

A goal at the 18th minute mark by Sahjah Reid of Serbian White Eagles was enough to secure the three points against Toronto Croatia at Esther Shiner Stadium when he took a pass outside the box to move in and beat Toronto Croatia goalkeeper Antonio Ilic with a low drive inside the left post.

It was 1-0 at half-time and at the final whistle for Serbian White Eagles with Toronto Croatia ending the game with 10 men after Ilic was shown the red card for serious play at 76 minutes.

Serbian White Eagles now have an improved 7-12-2 for 23 points in eighth position in the standings and with one game remaining are in a position with Astros Vasas FC to keep up a bid for the eighth and final playoff spot.

Toronto Croatia are in third position with a 13-3-5 record for 44 points, with one game remaining, tied on points with York Region Shooters following their defeat at Waterloo.

SC Waterloo were impressive with their 5-0 victory at Warrior Field, which follows a 9-0 defeat of St. Catharines Wolves Sunday. Defender Dado Hadrovic opened the scoring at 35 minutes and David Muir made it 2-0 three minutes later, the score at half-time.
