SCARBOROUGH LEADS……..Serbian White Eagles defeat York Region Saturday

There were two games played in the Canadian Soccer League Saturday, with Scarborough SC scoring a decisive 3-0 victory over Toronto Falcons to move to the top of the standings, while Serbian White Eagles continued its recent winning form to defeat York Regions Shooters 2-1. A third game, BGHC 1 vs Continentals FC scheduled mid-afternoon, was postponed.

Forward Milos Scepanovic opened the scoring for Scarborough from a free kick at 12 minutes and Gonzalo Matias Cabrera Celis increased the lead to 2-0 at the 31st minute mark. The goal resulted from a rebound when a Falcons’ goalkeeper Vasyl Shpuk clearance resulted in a rebound off the Scarborough forward. It was 2-0 at the break and Scarborough continued to press in the second half until midfielder Neven Radakovic struck for a 3-0 lead at 56 minutes.

Toronto Falcons had few opportunities to find the net until substitute midfielder Oleh Kivalo took a late pass eight yards out but his attempt was saved by Scarborough goalkeeper Christan Moraldo. It was 3-0 at the final whistle.

Scarborough leaps into the top position in the standings with a 3-0-4 WLT record for 13 points while unbeaten in regular season games since 2020. Toronto Falcons are at 1-1-3 and six points in fifth position.

Serbian White Eagles’ forward Vladimir Strizovic opened the scoring at the 23rd minute against York Region Shooters, lifting the ball over the Shooters’ defence and out of reach of goalkeeper Daniel Gosciniak. It was 1-0 at the interval following an even first half. Strizovic also struck the second goal to lift Serbian White Eagles to a 2-0 lead at the 49th minute. York Region cut the lead to 2-1 at 82 minutes with a goal by forward Mahmoud Mehdi and Mehdi almost scored an equalizer with a strong drive from 20 yards on the right wing just before the final whistle, but the ball skimmed the left post with Serbian White Eagles goalkeeper Dan Pelc well beaten.

Serbian White Eagles are now four games without a loss and second in the table with a 3-1-3 record for 12 points, while York Region Shooters drop to third in the standings with a 3-2-2 record for 11 points.

Games will return to Centennial Stadium in Toronto’s west end next Saturday, July 23 at 2 pm

SOCCER BACK IN FULL VOICE FOR CIVIC HOLIDAY GAME

SOCCER BACK IN FULL VOICE FOR CIVIC HOLIDAY GAME

The holiday weekend schedule in both divisions

When Serbian White Eagles kickoff against Hamilton City at Centennial Stadium in Toronto’s west end Friday night the immediate vicinity, or perhaps a little beyond, will be well aware a soccer match is taking place.

That’s because the booming, familiar voice of Enio Perruzza will be heard announcing every player taking part and the important statistics and additional information the fans need to know in an event known for many decades as CSL pro soccer.

The game Friday night, August 3, 2018, is number 3,527 for Perruzza since his first time behind the microphone at an official CSL game involving Toronto Blizzard 32 years ago on August 3, 1986.

While the Canadian Soccer League has been Perruzza’s favourite league over the years, announcements and commentary have involved all levels of soccer in southern Ontario. From the academy game to top level professional soccer, from visiting teams such as Benfica from Portugal and Red Star Belgrade from Serbia, to the Italian National Military Team and the Mexican U-20 National Team – which saw many of the players move on to the World Cup – have all been announced locally by the Italian-born Perruzza.

There are dozens of important cup and championship matches, mostly in the CSL, but also 20 Ontario Cup semifinals and 18 finals.
Perruzza, 52, is back in fine voice for Friday’s match following heart by-pass surgery earlier this year. After calling a few warm-up games, the voice of CSL soccer moves into the second half of the season with the playoffs and key championship competition looming large in the coming weeks.

The Serbian White Eagles vs Hamilton City First Division game at Centennial Stadium Friday night, a 7 pm kickoff, starts the Civic Holiday weekend games and will be followed by Real Mississauga vs FC Ukraine United at the Hershey Centre, an 8.30 pm start on Friday. On Saturday it’s SC Waterloo vs CSC Mississauga, a 6.30 pm kickoff at RIM Park and FC Vorkuta vs Scarborough SC at Esther Shiner Stadium. That’s a 7 pm kickoff.

There are three CSL Second Division matches scheduled during the holiday weekend, with Serbian White Eagles B at home to Halton United B, a 9 pm kickoff at Centennial Stadium on Friday, to be followed on Saturday with Scarborough B vs FC Vorkuta B, a 1 pm kickoff at the OSA Soccer Centre Stadium, and on Sunday it’s Brantford Galaxy B vs Milton B at Lions Park, that’s a 6 pm start.

CARLO RIVAS JR PAVES WAY FOR ACADEMY GROUP

866-Carlos Rivas 2014York Region Shooters plan UK visit this summer

TORONTO – Wednesday, March 5 – Carlo Rivas Jr keeps the best of company and it’s not all in the family.

Carlo is the son of Carlos Rivas, one of the best midfielders to come out of South America and known for his outstanding play when Chile qualified for the 1982 World Cup finals. Today he operates the longstanding, highly successful Carlos Rivas Soccer School in southern Ontario.

Canadian-born Carlo, also a midfielder who started his career with Cruz Azul in Mexico followed by a several seasons in the Chilean first division and has in more recent times played for York Region Shooters in the CSL, is also the grandson of Adan Godoy, the goalkeeper for Chile in the 1966 World Cup in England. Carlo’s full name includes Godoy – it’s on his mother’s side.

Outside of the family, Carlo Rivas Jr met recently with Manuel Pellegrini, manager of English Premier League side Manchester City who played for Chile alongside Carlos Rivas, and from that meeting a visit to Manchester by York Region Shooters’ academy group of players is in the works for this coming summer.

Such visits provides exposure for the academy players to be seen by local coaches in a different soccer environment and the notable successes of about 100 Canadians playing in Europe at any given time over the years gives testimony to what exposure can achieve, either by an arranged trial or a scouting mission while players are at a young age.

One of the most notable examples would be Atiba Hutchinson who played for the Shooters and went on to represent Canada, was twice chosen Canada’s Player of the Year – in 2010 and 2012 – and has played for several top level clubs in Europe.

Keep an eye open for further details coming from York Region Shooters in the weeks ahead.

MIODRAG HAT-TRICK IN SERBIAN EAGLES VICTORY WEDNESDAY……..Shooters on top

Serbian White Eagles struck often with a 6-2 victory over Burlington SC, while York Region Shooters scored late to defeat St. Catharines Wolves by a single goal, two games in the CSL Wednesday night.

St. Catharines Wolves looked strong in the first half of their final home game of the regular season at Club Roma in St. Catharines – they have two away games still to play – but things took a turn for the worse when goalscorer Mohammed Mohammed was shown the red card by referee David Di Pasquale after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession for dissent and tripping at the 40th minute mark.

Playing a man short, the home side continued to play with at least a tie in mind, but at 83 minutes St. Catharines failed to clear a shot saved by goalkeeper Matthew Greco and Richard West struck for the visitors from close range for a 1-0 lead that held until the final whistle. It was West’s 18th of the season.

The win gave York Region Shooters an improved 14-3-1 record for 43 points for a tie on top of the First Division standings with Kingston FC, while St. Catharines Wolves are at 7-13-0 for 21 points.

Midfielder Nikola Miodrag scored a first half hat-trick to lead Serbian White Eagles to a 6-2 defeat of Burlington SC at Esther Shiner Stadium, he opened the scoring quickly with a goal at three minutes, then two more at 30 and 31 minutes. Forward Sahjah Reid struck the fourth goal for Serbian Eagles, finding the net past Burlington goalkeeper Vladimir Vujasinovic at 38 minutes.

Burlington’s goals were scored by midfielder Nicholas Lindsay at 19 minutes and James Stamopoulos at the 41st minute mark and it was 4-2 at the interval.

Serbian Eagles continued to press in the second half and Kiril Dimitrov found the net to make it 5-2 at 70 minutes and Vitomar Jelic rounded the scoring at 6-2 at the 86 minute mark.

Serbian White Eagles move up to 10th position in the standings with a 6-10-1 WLT record for 19 points, while Burlington are one below with a 6-13-0 record for 18 points.

SUROT SCORES FOUR IN KINGSTON’S 6-0 ROUT….top teams Shooters, Brampton also win

<![CDATA[Kingston FC striker Guillaume Surot led his team with four goals to a 6-0 rout of Astros Vasas FC and sole possession of first place in the CSL First Division, while in two other games played Sunday, the top teams continued to keep pace – a York Region Shooters 3-0 victory over London City and a Brampton City Utd 3-1 win over Burlington SC.

BRAMPTON, SHOOTERS KEEP PACE WITH SUNDAY VICTORIES…. Toronto Croatia held

Milos Scepanovic hat-trick helped Brampton City Utd defeat Windsor Stars 3-1, while York Region Shooters downed Burlington SC 4-1 to keep pace with Kingston FC at the top of the CSL standings, and in the late game Sunday night Toronto Croatia failed to find the net in a scoreless tie with SC Waterloo.
David Kadoic opened the scoring for Windsor Stars at Victoria Park in Brampton at 11 minutes when he drove the ball from 10 yards to the right of Brampton goalkeeper Eugenio Garro.
Milos Scepanovic struck his first goal at 36 minutes to tie the score 1-1, making no mistake with a penalty awarded by referee Manuel Orellana for hand ball. It was 1-1 at the break.
Scepanovic was fouled in the box at 75 minutes and took another penalty to score his second goal for a 2-1 Brampton lead and 12 minutes later, Brampton were down to 10 men when forward Marcos Nunes was shown the red card by referee Orellana for violent conduct.
Scepanovic completed his hat-trick at 92 minutes when he took a pass following a breakaway to drive the ball past Garro, a 3-1 final score.
It was goal number 11 this season for Milos Scepanovic and the win gives Brampton a 10-3-0 WLT record for 30 points and fourth in the standings, while Windsor Stars have a 6-6-3 record for 21 points.
Forward Ryan Dummett – usually a solid defender but playing up front – had York Region Shooters off to a good start at the St. Joan of Arc ground with a goal at the 15th minute mark. Dummett took a pass from Mario Orestano he drove the ball past Burlington ‘keeper Vladimir Vujasinovic for a 1-0 lead.
Nicholas Lindsay tied the score for Burlington at 34 minutes, heading in a pass from Jamal Allison and the 1-1 score held to the half-time whistle.
Substitutions for the second half for the home side brought results with a goal at 72 minutes by midfielder Francisco Javier Perez who headed in from a cross by Dummett and Javier Perez scored a second and York Region’s third 10 minutes later when he found the net from a rebound to make it 3-1.
Shooters forward Kadian Lecky completed the scoring two minutes later, he found the lower right corner of the net after taking a pass from Orestano and the game ended 4-1 in favour of York Region Shooters who now have a 10-3-1 record for 31 points and tied for second position in the standings, while Burlington SC are at 4-9-0 for 12 points.
Toronto Croatia were held to a scoreless tie by SC Waterloo at Centennial Stadium, a game with lots of midfield play but few scoring opportunities.
Ranko Golijanin was the main threat for SC Waterloo but strikes were off the mark and forward Tihomir Maletic drove an opportunity over the bar early in the second half.
Toronto Croatia have a 9-2-4 record for 31 points, tied for second in the standings with York Region Shooters, while SC Waterloo have a 5-5-4 record for 19 points and a mid-table 7th position in the standings.

SHOOTERS, KINGSTON AIM FOR THE TOP……Two more postponments at Centennial Stadium

With two of the top four teams seeing action this weekend, Kingston FC (at home to SC Waterloo) and York Region Shooters (visiting Windsor Stars), both have an opportunity if they achieve a victory on Sunday to move ahead of Toronto Croatia in the CSL First Division standings to continue a week by week ever changing race for the league title.
Toronto Croatia are without a game due to their home ground of Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke still under repair following the severe flooding of July 8 and the home game against Brampton City Utd scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed.
The ground closure has also affected the Serbian White Eagles vs Burlington SC encounter previously set for Friday night, this game has also been called off and is to be played late in the season.
For the eight teams underneath the runaway top four it may develop into a fight for one of the four remaining playoff berths from a total of eight if the present trend continues, and while some clubs are faltering at this stage of the season, Astros Vasas FC is a club on the improve. They will have an opportunity to be seen this weekend by the visiting Hungarian Secretary of State for Sport in that eastern European country, Lajos Kü , who will be present at Sunday’s game for a ceremonial kickoff.
Lajos Kü played for Videoton, Ferencvárosi TC, Club Brugge K.V. and SC Eisenstadt. He played for Brugge KV against Liverpool in the European Cup Final of 1978, but is well-known also for gaining a silver medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics and being a midfielder for Hungary in UEFA Euro 1972.
Game time Sunday’s Astros Vasas FC vs St. Catharines Wolves clash at Esther Shiner is 4.30 pm.

YORK REGION SHOOTERS MAKE IT EIGHT IN A ROW…Toronto Croatia rebounds while Brampton falls to London City

York Region
Shooters extended their winning streak to eight games, Toronto Croatia bounced
back with a victory over Burlington SC and Brampton City Utd fell to London
City, three games in the CSL Sunday.

It was
scoreless for most of the hard-fought contest at Victoria Park in Brampton with
the first goal coming at 78 minutes when London City midfielder Harris Faziagic
opened the scoring for the visitors, a well-taken goal while cutting in from
the right wing to drive the ball in off the post away from a beaten Camilo
Benzi in the Brampton goal.

Just six
minutes later, Benzi was shown the red card by referee David Di Pasquale who
ejected the Brampton goalkeeper for Violent Conduct.

Brampton
pressed to get on even terms in the latter stages, but London increased their
lead when Jefferson Omide Agaiha scored into an empty net at 99 minutes while
substitute Brampton goalkeeper Euloge Kodzo Awitor was caught out of position.

The defeat
is a set-back for the home side while bidding for the First Division title. The
GTA side are third in the standings with an 8-3-0 for 24 points, while London
City improve with a 5-5-3 record for 18 points.

It was a
chippy encounter at the St. Joan of Arc ground in Maple where the home side
York Region Shooters eked out a 1-0 victory over SC Waterloo to extend their
winning streak to eight games, but it was all in doubt until the final whistle.

The first
half was scoreless but not without incident with referee Ramee Arbaji extended
to keep the game under control. York Region
Shooters opened the scoring at 65 minutes, a goal by midfielder Ali Hamam, his
sixth of the season. Hamam drove the ball from 12 yards on to a Waterloo
defender and the ball deflected to enter the net to the right of goalkeeper
Imad Hakura.

It was a close
contest through the second half and
Waterloo had an opportunity to tie the game from the penalty spot when referee
Arbaji called a foul inside the box at the 94th minute mark, but
Drazen Vukovic hit the post with the Shooters goalkeeper Adrian Ibanez well
beaten.

The eight
game winning streak gives York Region a 9-2-1 record for 28 points, tied with
Kingston FC for the top position. SC Waterloo has a 5-3-3 record for 18 points
and still very much in contention.

It was a
ding-dong affair at Nelson Stadium in Burlington where the lead changed hands
starting with Burlington scoring a go-ahead goal against Toronto Croatia at the
sixth minute mark, a goal by midfielder Nicholas Lindsay.

Tihomir Maletic tied the game 1-1 for Toronto
Croatia at the 18th minute mark, the score at half-time, and the prolific striker again beat Burlington
goalkeeper Vladimir Vujasinovic at 55
minutes for a 2-1 Croatia lead. The goals were Maletic’s 5th and 6th
of the season.

Lindsay
struck again just three minutes later for the home side to level the score 2-2, his 7th goal of the campaign, but
Toronto Croatia forward Kresimir Prgomet
scored the winning goal at the 71st minute mark – a 3-2 lead that
held up to the final whistle.

Prgomet’s winning
goal was his 7th of the season and the victory lifted Toronto
Croatia to a 7-2-3 record for 24 points, tied for third place in the standings.
Burlington FC have a 4-7-0 record for 12 points.

There were
two games in the CSL Second Division Sunday, York Region Shooters B defeated SC
Waterloo B 3-1 and Brampton City Utd B downed London City B, 3-0.

SHOOTERS, BRAMPTON, WATERLOO SCORE SUNDAY VICTORIES…Toronto Croatia falters

York Region Shooters handed Toronto Croatia their second loss in less than a week with a 2-0 defeat at the St. Joan of Arc ground in Maple and the three points earned put Shooters in a position tied for top spot as the CSL campaign enters the second half of the season.
Midfielder Ali Hamam scored the opening goal at 18 minutes, heading in past Toronto Croatia goalkeeper Antonio Ilic off a corner kick and in a game in which the current CSL champions had enough chances to draw level, Shooters’ goalkeeper Adrian Ibanez kept the visitors off the scoresheet and it was 1-0 at the break.
Richard West increased the Shooters’ lead to 2-0 when he took a pass from Kadian Lecky to place the ball into the net to the left of Ilic. It was 2-0 for York Region at the end.
York Region Shooters are back tied for the top position with Kingston FC in the standings with an improved 8-2-1 WLT record for 25 points, while Toronto Croatia slip to fourth place with a 6-2-3 record for 21 points.
Forward Marcos Nunes opened the scoring for Brampton City Utd against St. Catharines Wolves at Victoria Park in Brampton, finding the net from close in past the St. Catharines’ goalkeeper Matthew Greco at the 19th minute mark and it was 1-0 at the interval. It was Nunes’ 12th goal of the season.
Milos Scepanovic struck twice for the home side in the second half, his first came at 77 minutes for a 2-0 Brampton lead and the former European standout scored again at 87 minutes for a 3-0 score at the final whistle. The goals were numbers 5 and 6 of the season for Scepanovic.
Brampton City Utd keep pace with a very good eight wins in their 8-2-0 record for 24 points trailing the top two by just a single point.
Forward Nicholas Lindsay struck the opening goal for Burlington at 31 minutes following a miscue in the Astros Vasas FC defence in the game at Downsview Park. A pass back to Astros’ goalkeeper Laszlo Barna was intercepted by Lindsay who promptly drove the ball into the back of the net and it was 1-0 for the visitors at half-time.
Burlington were awarded a penalty kick which resulted in a goal at the 71st minute when Astros Vasas defender Kurt Ramsey fouled in the box for referee Lyes Arfa to point to the spot. Burlington player-coach William Etchu Tabi scored for a 2-0 lead, the game result.
Waterloo SC are edging closer to the top and Sunday’s victory at Warrior Field in Waterloo puts the southwestern Ontario side in a position to make a bid for the top spot during the second half of the season. Windsor Stars played with 10-men for a part of the game after Chris Suta was shown the red card by referee Ljubisa Vrljes.
Midfielder Shawn Brown opened the scoring for Waterloo at 59 minutes following a closely contested scoreless first half.

Following a goalless, well played first half at the Terry Fox Stadium in Brampton, forward Marcos Nunes opened the scoring for Brampton City Utd at 51 minutes when he drove the ball inside the post and to the right of Niagara goalkeeper Jonathan Bruggeling. Nunes made it 2-0 at 84 minutes when he closed in with the ball to beat Bruggeling from close range.

Late in the game Brampton were controlling the play and at 90 minutes the home side went further ahead with a goal for the penalty spot at 90 minutes by striker Milos Scepanovic and the 3-0 score remained to the final whistle. Referee David Barrie called the penalty following a hand ball infringement by a Niagara United defender.

ST. CATHARINES WOLVES FULL MARKS FOR SEASON OPENER VICTORY..London City salvage late tie with Shooters

A goalmouth miscue by York Region Shooters at 93 minutes gave London City a 2-2 tie at the Hellenic Community Centre ground in London and in one other game played in the Canadian Soccer League Friday night, St. Catharines Roma Wolves handed the home side Serbian White Eagles a 3-1 defeat at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke.
