KINGSTON NOTCH FIRST VICTORY, TFC AND TORONTO CROATIA DOMINATE…the Astros and Shooters play to scoreless tie

Kingston FC gained their first victory in the CSL First Division in a close encounter at Brampton, North York Astros and York Region Shooters played to a scoreless tie, while TFC Academy and Toronto Croatia both scored decisive wins, four games in the CSL Sunday.

It was an end-to-end encounter at Victoria Park in Brampton where Kingston FC took the lead from the penalty spot over Brampton City Utd at 28 minutes following a shirt-pulling incident inside the box. Forward Antonios Assaad fired into the net past Brampton goalkeeper Jason Lopes.

Brampton midfielder David Velastagui put the home side on equal terms at 55 minutes, but Kingston regained the lead just one minute later when Assaad scored his second for a 2-1 score.

Following good play by both sides, Mademba Ba struck a third Kingston goal at 86 minutes for a 3-1 lead by the visitors and three minutes later Brampton’s David Guzman reduced the lead to 3-2 from the penalty spot following a foul inside the 18 yard line. The game ended 3-2.

In the game at Downsview Park, TFC Academy midfielder Mario Orestano opened the scoring at the 27th minute mark against a depleted London City side missing key players on their injured list – he found the net past London ‘keeper Zoran Pusica.

TFC defender Deon Rose made it 2-0 six minutes later and three minutes later at the 36th minute mark, Toronto midfielder Omari Morris increased the lead to 3-0.

TFC’s Ryan James made it 4-0 at 66 minutes, and the home side’s Marko Miketic increased the lead to 5-0 at 72 minutes.

Miketic scored his second and the academy team’s sixth goal at 86 minutes, he put the ball past London’s substitute goalkeeper Scott Chalmers and it remained 6-0 to the final whistle.

Toronto Croatia dominated in almost every department as the game wore on against SC Waterloo at Centennial Stadium in Toronto’s west-end and it started when midfielder Hayden Fitzwilliams scored for the home side after 18 minutes to make it 1-0.

SC Waterloo drew level just one minute later, a goal by forward Shawn Brown, but at 26 minutes Croatia’s Tihomir Maletic struck from the penalty spot after being brought down in the box.

Josip Keran increased the lead to 3-1 for Toronto Croatia at 34 minutes, the score at half-time after Drazen Vukovic missed a penalty kick for SC

Waterloo.

Toronto Croatia midfielder Marin Vucemilovic Grgic then struck twice, the first at 72 minutes and again six minutes later for a 5-1 home lead and Maletic rounded out the scoring at 80 minutes, a 6-1 final.

It was a well-played scoreless encounter at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York where the Astros and York Region Shooters both came close to scoring despite a game played mostly in midfield.

North York goalkeeper Antal Toth made key saves late in the game and the game ended 0-0.

There was one game in the CSL Second Division Sunday when Brampton City Utd B defeated Kingston FC B by a score of 13-0.

TORONTO CROATIA OFF TO FLYING START… Montreal Impact Academy and Shooters play to scoreless tie

The current CSL champions were off to a flying start to the new season with a 4-1 home victory over Brantford Galaxy at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, and in one other game played in the Canadian Soccer League Sunday, Montreal Impact Academy and York Region Shooters battled to a scoreless tie in Montreal.

It was the visitors who took the lead when Brantford forward Dave Simpson crossed the ball from the right win and found the top corner of the net and out of reach of the Croatia goalkeeper Pan Koumoulas at the 10 minute mark, but nine minutes later Toronto Croatia forward Bozenko Lesina tied the game 1-1.

Toronto Croatia’s leading scorer in 2011, striker Tihomir Maletic, struck from the penalty spot, a penalty called by referee David Barrie at 34 minutes, to make it 2-1 and that was the score at half-time.

Lesina scored his second goal one minute after the interval and at 79 minutes Croatia’s Marin Grgic  made it 4-1 with a drive from 25 yards to the left of  Galaxy goalkeeper Melford James Jr.

It was a well-played, at times physical encounter when Montreal Impact Academy and York Region Shooters failed to find the net to play to a scoreless tie at the at the St. Jean De Vianney ground in Montreal.

The best scoring chances came from defender Maxime Tissot and forward Victor Ndiaye of Montreal, but Camilo Benzi in the York Region net preserved the shutout, while Jason Beaulieu looked solid in goal for the home side.

The Montreal Impact Academy line-up included last season’s CSL leading goalscorer and former TFC Academy striker Stefan Vukovic after signing a three-month contract

Vukovic led the CSL last year with 18 goals.

“We liked what we saw from Stefan,” said Montreal Academy head coach Philippe Eullaffroy. “This contract is a nice balance for both sides, to see how he fits in here and to see if he likes it here as well. After the three months, we will revisit things then.”

It was close for the remainder of the game and Windsor goalkeeper Anthony Santilli preserved the win with some good saves.

CSL’S YORK REGION SHOOTERS COMBINE WITH SCHOOL FOR ELITE ATHLETES

The CSL’s York Region Shooters and the PEAC School for Elite Athletes have struck an agreement for the sharing of expertise and facilities in that their respective fields in an effort to develop more Canadian players for international and high level soccer home and abroad.

York Region Shooters have for many years given priority to the development of young soccer players while having their prominent professional team in the CSL’s First Division as part of a pyramid arrangement that provides an extra competitive edge and inspiration to young players with promise.

The club has been a stepping stone for a number of players moving to a higher level overseas and with Canada’s national team, the most notable being midfielder Atiba Hutchinson, now 28, who began his soccer career in earnest with the York Region organization, is now playing in Europe while prominent with the Canadian World Cup team. Hutchinson has marked up more than 55 appearances for Canada in recent years and was voted Canada’s top male player of the year in 2010.

PEAC, located in Toronto and London, Ontario, offers athletes from various sports the opportunity to be well-grounded while developing a strong foundation for athletic success. The arrangement will provide for PEAC soccer players already in PEAC programs for skills development by licensed coaches, the opportunity to interface with competitive soccer, its facilities, practices and training with York Region.

York Region Shooters will have access to highly qualified instructors, gymnasium time and other benefits at PEAC facilities, the main centre of which is located at the Downsview Park Sports Centre in north Toronto.

“This is an excellent arrangement for the players in the Shooters organization and I know we will benefit considerably working with PEAC, while in turn soccer players with PEAC have an opportunity to extend their training in a more serious, highly competitive environment,” said Tony De Thomasis, president of York Region Shooters in making the announcement with Neil Doctorow, the director of PEAC School for Elite Athletes.

“The arrangement will help to identify and assist more promising young players who deserve the opportunity to play at a high level,” added De Thomasis

YORK REGION SHOOTERS ELIMINATE SC TORONTO IN CLIFFHANGER

SC Toronto won the match but York Region Shooters took the spoils following a ding-dong 127 minutes of entertaining  second leg quarterfinal playoff soccer at Lamport Stadium in Toronto’s west-end Friday night.

The second of a two-game home and away series to decide the team to advance to the semifinals in pursuit of the CSL Championship – the Shooters won the first clash 1-0 on October 9 – was described by Rogers TV commentator Zamir Karim as “One of the best games in the CSL all season.”

The score at the end of 97 minutes of regular time plus added time was 4-3 for SC Toronto, which added up to a 4-4 aggregate over the two games.  30 minutes of extra time were played to decide the winner – which it didn’t, so the 4-4 aggregate went into penalty kicks, won 4-2 by York Region Shooters.

There were nine attempts for the 4-2 penalty kick victory by York Region, but the game itself also saw three spot kicks and all found the net.

The first produced the opening goal of the game when SC Toronto’s Massimo Mirabelli scored following a tripping incident called by referee Gianni Facchini.  That was followed by a similar infringement by SC Toronto and forward Kadian Lecky scored for the Shooters at 39 minutes, a 1-1 score at half-time.

SC Toronto went ahead at 52 minutes, a goal by Alexandros Halis, but the visitors tied the game 2-2 10 minutes later from the third spot kick and like the earlier one, Kadian Lecky made no mistake for his second of the match. Referee Facchini ordered the kick following a pushing incident in the SC Toronto box.

Mirabelli struck his second of the game at 73 minutes for a SC Toronto lead, but at 89 minutes Jason De Thomasis scored an untidy goal, but one which tied the game 3-3 for the Shooters and which appeared to be the quarterfinal decider.

But SC Toronto came back to score again when Halis headed past York Region goalkeeper Adam Majer and two defenders at the 96th  minute mark, a last minute life-line that led to the 30 minutes of extra time. The goal came after the home side’s John Louis Perruzo was red-carded at 93 minutes and before Lecky was sent off the bench at 97 minutes.

SC Toronto lost coach Carmine Isacco when he was ordered out of the game just before half-time for dissent.

SHOOTERS, SERBIAN EAGLES A STEP AHEAD

York Region Shooters and Serbian White Eagles got the jump on their opposition with narrow victories in the first leg of quarterfinal playoff games Sunday, heading for the CSL Championship at the end of October.

The Shooters gained the advantage in the first of a two-game quarterfinals series with a 1-0 victory over CSL First Division winners SC Toronto at the St. Joan of Arc ground in Maple, just north of Toronto, while Serbian White Eagles gained a 2-0 victory over Brampton Lions a few hours later at Victoria Park in Brampton.

Dino Gardener was the goalscorer for the home side York Region Shooters, he struck just 4 minutes into the game with a drive from just five yards out and that goal held up throughout an encounter which could have gone either way.

The two teams will meet in the second leg on Friday, October 14 at Lamport Stadium, that’s an 8 pm kickoff.

An early send-off made things a little easier for Serbian White Eagles in the first leg game against Brampton City Utd at Victoria Park in Brampton when Brampton goalkeeper Roy Blanche was shown the red card at 33 minutes by referee Yusri Rudolf.

Referee Rudolf judged that Blanche fouled in preventing ‘an obvious goalscoring opportunity’,  which is an immediate send off and which reduced the home side to 10 men.

Serbian White Eagles went ahead at 41 minutes when Brampton substitute goalkeeper Kodzo Awitor’s attempted clearance was picked up by Serbian Eagles’ forward Alex Braletic who scored from 20 yards.

Following a 1-0 lead at the interval and a close encounter during the second half, Serbian Eagles’ Milos Scepanovic found the net with a drive from 18 yards at the 89th minute that entered the net to the left of Awitor, a 2-0 lead for the visitors and which was the final score.

Serbian White Eagles will host Brampton in the second leg at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke on Saturday, October 15 at 8 pm.

The first leg results and upcoming second leg games are:

In one First Division game played Sunday, London City defeated TFC Academy 2-1 to close their season on a winning note.

London City forward Mike Marcoccia gave his side one-up at the Polish Club in London, the goal coming in the first minute of play for a 1-0 home lead at half-time.

Midfielder Gent Miftari increased the lead to 2-0 at 80 minutes, he found the net past TFC goalkeeper Quillan Roberts, but the visitors came back to score at 86 minutes when striker Stefan Vukovic’s attempt appeared to be saved by London’keeper Fabian Knezevic, until the ball spun over the line.

The goal was number 18 for the season for Vukovic, who has been outstanding with the academy side since his transfer from Serbian White Eagles.

The win gives London City 21 points to complete the season, the best performance in five years for a team with a longstanding reputation for giving young players in southwestern Ontario an opportunity to experience first entry professional soccer. London City also fielded a team in the CSL Second Division.

TFC Academy has one game remaining in their 2011 campaign, a game with the Astros at Esther Shiner Stadium on October 17.

ST. CATHARINES WOLVES FULL MARKS FOR SEASON OPENER VICTORY..London City salvage late tie with Shooters

A goalmouth miscue by York Region Shooters at 93 minutes gave London City a 2-2 tie at the Hellenic Community Centre ground in London and in one other game played in the Canadian Soccer League Friday night, St. Catharines Roma Wolves handed the home side Serbian White Eagles a 3-1 defeat at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke.

It was a chippy affair in London where three players – two from the visiting Shooters and one from London City were shown the red card by referee Matt McCready for offences which included violent conduct.

Forward Aldin Kukic put London City into the lead at 37 minutes and Nicolas Martinez of York Region Shooters tied the score 1-1 at the 44th minute mark.

Richard West put the visitors in front at 83 minutes when he found the net past London goalkeeper Vladimir Markotic and York Region appeared to have the game won when in added time Shooters goalkeeper Adrian Ibanez was involved in a goalmouth collision. The mishap allowed London midfielder Gent Miftari to pick-up the loose ball and find the net from close range for a 2-2 tie.

The ejections, which left York Region Shooters with nine men, were Andre Stewart and Rickey Herron, while Marin Vucemilovic Grgic of London City was also ordered off.

St. Catharines Wolves were full marks for their first victory of the season in the Garden City’s season opener and it was Calvin Rosario of St. Catharines who opened the scoring at 42 minutes when he headed in a free kick. It was 1-0 at the break.

Antonio Stranges made it 2-0 three minutes into the second half following a breakaway and at the 70th minute a Serbian White Eagles home victory became more unlikely when Daniel Chamale was ordered off on receiving a second yellow card.

The visitors went further ahead on a goal by Brett Larocque at 83 minutes and two minutes later Serbian White Eagles were awarded a penalty kick and Kiril Dimitrov scored with his second attempt from the spot for a 3-1 final score in favour of St. Catharines Wolves.

Gardiner hit the ball into the roof of the net, beating Astros Vasas goalkeeper Antal-Andras Toth with the hard drive from just outside the box.
