Richard West led York Region Shooters with a hat-trick to a 3-0 victory over FC Ukraine United at the St. Joan of Arc ground Sunday night, which vaulted the prolific striker to the top of the CSL goalscoring chart and secured first place for his team and the 2016 CSL First Division title.

West found the net at 21 and 45 minutes for a 2-0 lead at the interval and at 66 minutes headed a cross from the right wing into the net and out of reach of Ukraine United goalkeeper  Nazar Lytvyn to complete the hat-trick.  The goal was West’s 12 for the season.

It was the only First Division game played Sunday night.

The First Division title win for York Region is reminiscent of the 2014 season when the team just north of Toronto last won the First Division title. Shooters then went on to win the playoffs and the CSL Championship.

This season, the Shooters have been defeated just twice in 17 games played with four games remaining to complete their 21-game regular season, but the statistic which reflects their outstanding season more than any other is in the goals conceded column – just 7 goals against in the 17 played so far.

York Region has a season record of 13-2-2 WLT for 41 points, which is 14 points clear of their nearest rivals SC Scarborough in second spot.

Ukraine United are in sixth place in the standings with a 5-6-4 record for 19 points.

There was one game in the CSL Second Division Sunday night when SC Waterloo defeated visiting London City, 5-2.
